Last week I was on a 200km trip to my workplace and I could feel the bike struggling a bit though it was gaining speeds.
Also, noticed that bike is not responding to throttle at times for a fraction of a second (as if no petrol in tank or bike going into reserve).
Bike was running fine when I was using the bike for my office commute (means short trips).
Came back to native last Thursday and the problem surfaced again 3-4 times.
Told the issue to mechanic in my native and he immediately pointed to vacuum piston of carb. He opened carb and the vacuum piston(slide) had scratch marks around and looked like its worn out (Bike odo at 45500 kms).
He replaced the vacuum piston and bike had some some other works to be done - like leaking head gasket, throttle cable with broken outer, welding the chain covers, battery water topup etc.
All done and bike was returned and I took a test ride. I could sense the increase in pick up and was happy. But again when I was on my 200km trip yesterday night, the bike started behaving differently!
It hesitates to rev past 4.5k rpm! If we open the throttle it doesn't respond and sometimes suddenly responds after 3-4 seconds! It struggles on inclines and responds as if it has a 50cc engine underneath.
Once we reach 4.5k rpm on top gear and if we keep increasing the throttle slowly, it slowly gains speed and rev to 6.5k rpm though it takes its sweet time.
I reached destination with no other issues than this. Today morning I had to crank the bike 3-4 times for starting, it used to start in the first crank before.
Not sure what is the issue, is it a sticky carb slide issue that we have seen in ZMA threads?
Please guide.

sibun, psr sir - please pitch in!
Did you check your air filter ? i feel this could be the culprit .

Air filter was cleaned by the mechanic.
Also, bike's pick up till 4.5/5k RPM is really good. But it struggles to go past beyond this RPM!

Check in this order

1. Air filter box under seat
2. TPS wiring
3. Main Jet
4. Diaphragm ( CULPRIT )
5. Engaged Choke ( unlikely)
6. Compression.

i had this exact issue and air filter was changed. when the air supply was not adequate especially at high revs which usually demands more air, this issue will arise.

u can check in the order given by Rohiit. most probably your issue will be sorted out.

SatSon- Check the following things:-
1. Air filter- Anything over 8k change it. Cleaning doesn't help and extreme is hungry for air. With the 28mm carb and cold drink stray size main jet, it requires a proper air flow. Symptoms are late response on sudden throttle openings.
2. Vacuum leak- Check the diaphragm to be properly seated. Usually slides in extreme do not wear out so soon.
3. spark plug- A sorted spark plug will give the same kind of feel.

Do these checks and get bak to me.

This thread has been silent for many days.

And i have not been updating here from last 15 days owing to my transfer and thus daily shuffling to and back from home almost. Now have finally settled and will shift this week.

My bike is now at 75k. Yes.

SO how has been. She came home on 14 th september 2011. It has been 5 years 5 months and 15 days.

To say the least have gotten attached to it. Has become a part of family.
Talking in details then will sum up the points.

Pros:-
1. Absolute performer- She is really a performer in its size. In fact it belies its capacity and perform like bigger capacity bike. The top end is addictive. Beyond 5k rpm she pulls like turbocharged. And after 6.5k rpm, all hell breaks loose. She rapidly touches redline. Have touched 122 kph more than a lot of occasions.

2. Ergonomics- One of the best seating positions. Neither too upright to put pressure on tail one, nor too forward biased to put pressure on wrist.

3. Handling- Right there. Its not like R15 which is a benchmark but still confidence inspiring. More than what we can do. With the change of tires it has improves. Also had modified the suspension mounting with double bearing and handling has been very good. Load up the front by leaning forward and she corners like on rails.

4. Space:- Ya this is not a car review, but space is awesome. I am 5,10.5'" and with shoes i stand 6'. Still i have enough room to slide around on seat. Two up and with luggage it still feels awesome. And even though it has split seats the rear seat is still comfortable. Have toured with mom and she didn't feel anything.

5. Suspension- One of the best. Neither too plush nor too stiff. I have stiffened the rear suspension to 4th notch and the handling is mind blowing. But the front suspension is little soft and has started sagging a bit. Will change the springs and insert spacers to stiffen them up.

6. Mileage- consistent 50+ and under controlled wrist she returns 55+ kpl easily. Lowest was 33 kpl when the throttle was wide open for whole trip. Speeds in excess of 100 always.

7. Reliability- 75k kms and never she has taken a second click to start. May be because i maintain her like i do.

Cons:-

1. Torque- The low end torque is really low. After riding joy, i feel it has no torque at low rev range.

2. Engine oil- Its preferred diet is 10 W 30 and favorite is Veedol. Any grade other than 10 W 30 and performance takes a hit.

3. Brakes- Although my brake is good but a little more bite would have helped. A friend has changed the master cylinder on his extreme to apache and brake is just awesome.

4. Weight- too heavy for its class. A 10 kg less weight would have been better. But has amazing stability on highways.

5. Height- One of the tallest bike around. Anybody less than 5'8" will find it difficult to touch ground.

I am practically attached to it.

I am getting a Karizma R for 55k, 20k run only with no scratches but i am not buying because i have to sell this one.

So you can feel how much its attached. Even my mom who likes the Joy but not extreme has started liking it after numerous trips.

Some mods planned are:-

1. Full DC lightning.

2. Front suspension stiffening

3. And a thorough cleaning opening the panels, and polishing.

Regarding air filter, its around 9k old, will get it replaced.
I too think it is related to diaphragm/slide as this is the one that has been changed!
Spark plug is new one and is NGK (genuine I believe) .

Between, I had a chat with my colleague who owns a Gixxer SF and he had owned a used Hunk before.
When I said I own a Hunk, he was like - how you are riding that bike, its the worst bike with worst pickup, it struggles on inclines etc. I was like
I didn't continue the talk or proceed to arguments as I was sure that either his Hunk was in a very bad condition or he loves his Gixxer too much!
I know how my bike performs when I zoom past the Swifts and other cars on highway, the insane pull on twisted inclines in my native and how good is the seating position for long rides.

hello friends, today cleaned centrifugal filter and oil screen filter at service centre. after cleaning its good and became very silent at higher revs. Engine oil (veedol 10W30) is provided by me and by this service centre was not very happy and dont take any responsbility regarding engine problems.

they told that only Hero honda 4T plus engine oil is best, i take all the responsbility of engine, although bike warranty is expired. mechanic removed all the existing gasket by scraching with blade type thing, then applied new gaskets without any gasket sealant but there is no leakage. My bike has completed 8800 Kms, very soon i am going to change air filter for better breathing at higher revs.

After side case removing, only 900 ml oil is filled to bike, is it ok. bike manual suggest that 1.2 litres is ideal after side case removing . please suggest what to do???

If only 900 ml is filled then add 300 ml more.

Today morning i checked oil level(at cold, without starting bike and idle). Its at lowest point. Is there loose oil available or half litre bottle available. Kindly suggest. May I use car engine oil or different grade oil.

Get Hero / Honda 10w30 oil from market and top it up. but pour 50-100 ml and keep checking level so that you don't overfill

Never mix two different grades of oil. You used Veedol 10w30. So i would suggest you to buy another bottle of veedol 10w30 and pour in the engine how much is required.

Bro, are u referring to the dual bearing in the rear axle ?

1. Torque- The low end torque is really low. After riding joy, i feel it has no torque at low rev range.
I always feel low end torque is good if not best. only in the mid range lacks a bit.

Absolutely true. i have been using 10w30but always HERO oil , in-between shifted to 10w40 shell AX7, immediately i felt the drop in performance.

True that. Most people never rode Hunk/CBZ but their immediate response would be HUNK-Flop model ; CBZ - Average Bike.
All i would think of is to beat myself for asking/speaking with them about Hunk/CBZ

When i bought my bike almost everyone was against Hunk even in forums, but only the owners gave me good feedback with a doubtful on mileage.
But i trusted the engine and went ahead and now iam happily riding my bike while few of my friends who own different bike are ready to sell their bike for performance issue. The good thing is hero bike performs well even after it becomes old.

if u check oil level after warm up it will still lower, and it the way to check oil level. Top up immediately to avoid any mishaps and its better to use same oil.

Given the bike to an ASC in Trivandrum. The bike had massive oil leak from engine head along with the pulling issue (not revving past 5k rpm) I mentioned.
Guys there told me that one of the engine bolts' thread is gone and needs to be corrected in lathe. They took on and half days and returned the bike to me saying carb issue also has been rectified. He was saying that carb's spring was not loaded correctly and jets were clogged. But bike had the same problem when I took test drive. I was angry and returned bike to them saying I want the problem to be rectified. They returned the bike today and bike is back to its glory per the short test drive I had.
They say the problem was with the timing - it was not set properly when the previous mechanic opened the engine head and cylinder to change the gaskets.
Engine oil and air filter was also changed this time. Hope the problems end here.
