    • Hey guys,

I've been using my friend Gladi for the past few days. I absolutly love the riding posture and the suspensions. This damn thing can sit at 80kmph comfortable all day and i love the nature of the engine. it beg's to be revved. Guess thats the nature of all yamaha engines.

Me and my friend bought it for him back in 2006 but we rarly used it. Now am loving it again while he is enjoying my 220 for a month from now

But the bike has been very badly maintained. It has done only 19k kms. Just wanted to replace few things. now how much does these cost?

      1. chain sprocket kit
      2. Cone set
      3. Entire faring
      4. Disc assembly

But headlight are really pathetic. Any suggestions? i was thinking to put in Fz16 headlight assy.

Am thinking of exchanging my dad's splendor with a new gladi

Glad you are enjoying the gladi especially after owning and riding a p220... Anyways, the costs are as follows...
        >>Chain sprocket kit is around 1100 rupees...
        >>Cone set i'm not too sure... Is it also called race bearing kit?? If it is then it is Rs. 220...
        >>The fairing in the sense headlight thing right... Do not know for the old gladi's for the new ones the headlight cowl 1100 rupees... Headlight assembly is 900... and headlight stay is 300...
        >> Disc assembly- The plate is around 1100... Disc pads around 140 rupees...

I know of only these rates... If something is wrong pls correct me... And yes the headlight is pathetic... You can give the fz headlight a try... i think it will give better throw atleast...

        • Battery maintenance scare

I have been suffering a series of electrical related problems.

          1. The horn sounded weak. I was scared sh**less by that. I was carrying a pillion at that time. I was planning to take it to IYM... when the pillion got off and 20 metres down the road, the horn started working.

          2. Rode the bike in twilight for 45 min, parked the bike, took out the key and went away for 20 min. Came back, inserted the key - DEAD bike. No neutral light, no horn, no starter, nothing. Kick started the bike... 20 metres down - everything - starter even - working well.

Today, my father insisted that I check the battery. And I was dead shocked - the terminals were rusted through and through. IYM guys had simply ignored the battery during the first service.

We took the battery out. Electrolyte level was at max. Battery voltage was 12.7 volts. We cleaned out the terminals and the leads with sandpaper and put everything back together.

          So far, everything is OK.

Side note: The kick-start when bike is cold (cold as in not started in some time - say 2 or more hours, not specifically temperature) issue hasn't resolved itself yet. If it still exists, will take it up at the second service.

              • The electric start stoppped working since yesterday. Gave the battery for charging at a Yamaha Service Centre. Will be going to collect it back in a while.

After the 7th service of my bike earlier this month, i'm getting an overall fuel efficiency of 50 kmpl, which is good but not enough to make me happy! But no complaints, the Gladiator still rules!

If the FZ's headlight is better, do go in for the modification. But i hope it will remain that way after it is fitted on a Gladiator. Maybe the electrical system also might have to be reworked.

Yes, get a Gladiator in exchange for the Splendor!

                  • My electrical problems have come to a climax. Today the bike became electrically dead 4 times.

                    1. I stopped at a traffic light and switched off the engine. Switched on the engine kill switch and pushed the starter switch - no joy. Tried sounding the horn -dead. Thankfully, kick start worked.

                    2. While moving around a BEST at low speed, the bike stalled. The starter didn't work - I couldn't believe it! Pulled the bike to the side and got it started with the kick starter.

                    3. Returning from home (the electricals were fine when I started the bike at office) I stopped at a petrol pump. The bike was dead - again, kick to the rescue.

                    4. Parked the bike at home. Switched it off and tried starting it again - dead. Even kick didn't work.

I am taking it tomorrow first thing to the Yamaha service centre - that is, if I get it started.

It's very unfortunate that the gladi is giving you starter problems. I'm sure it's a battery problem. Get a new battery if recharging it doesn't help.

I touched 100 on the bike today. The speedometer actually showed 105. What was astonishing was that when i glanced at the speedometer while accelerating, it showed 70. Within a matter of a few seconds, at the next glance, i was doing 105! The road was an open stretch and slightly sloping downwards too, so that's what helped, but it was a fantastic feeling!!

Took my Gladiator to IYM today - thankfully the battery was OK in the morning and I could use the starter.

The service technician also got a taste of the issue - the bike was dead just after 15 min of being parked. He took the bike inside for half an hour and said he replaced the electrolyte completely since the specific gravity was not enough to hold charge.

And it might be all in the mind, but the bike has not been electrically dead even once today (as compared to yesterday and today morning). Will take it for a run tomorrow and keep an eye for next few days.

If the issue happened again, I was told to call them and they would provide details to get my battery replaced.

I have also started enjoying my bike. It requires a slight adjustment in attitude - it is not as if the bike is deliberately failing me. If the battery is weak, that just means I cannot allow the bike to stall before I reach my destination.

Even friends who have Avenger, Thunderbird and Pulsar 220 took test rides and have pointed out that while the Gladiator may not rip up the road, it is a fun bike to ride.

Believe it or not, I started using the bike (and biking) regularly only from 9th of this month and I hope to have improved every time I get off the saddle.

Mileage note: Refilled my tank yesterday. Odometer reads 400KM and mileage is approx 36KMPL. Hope to improve it by the next tankful.

Thats an abysmally low mileage figure for a gladiator. Do ride well and safely.

                          • hi rbhute,

hey as far your gladdy's milagae is concern just try to use this 2 simple rules : -

                            (1) During run-in period i.e. till 2000KM on odo ,strictly follow speed limit don't go beyond 40 Km/hr.
                            (2) just get tunned ur bike ,set idle engine RPM 1400. & during driving your bike keep the engine RPM 3000-4000 range.also after complition of ur bike's run in period don't go beyond 55 KM/hr speed limit so as to get a good mileage of around 55+ km/ltr.Rest depends upon ur driving style.
                            (3) get filled ur petrol tank in the morning hours before 8 o'clock .as petrol u will get is of more density hence by volume u will get more .

Hope this wud help you ...... let me know responce .

                            GLADYY ROCKS BUDDY !!!!!!!!

                            • Hi guys, thanks for your advice. Some updates:

The electrical (dead battery) problem - Today, I decided to stuff my document copies in the space to the right of the battery in the battery compartment. Once I did that, the bike was dead! A friend of mine got down with me and started tweaking at various connectors in the region. It turned out that the fuse connectors were loose - he flicked at it and the neutral light went off and on. He opened the fuse holder and fuse was literally falling off from the C type connectors, which he tightened.

I need to speak to the Yamaha service guys at the next service, if not sooner.

Regarding the fuel efficiency, I am worried too, but not much.

First of all, this is my first bike, so I am not too sure of "best practices" that other bikers follow instinctively. Add to this, the run-in period practices.

Second, I am also a noob rider - so things like over-revving and riding at high RPM in lower gear (sometimes I forget or decide to "concentrate on other things like getting into the left lane") have been happening frequently. In fact, in the initial stages of my usage, the bike used to be revved a lot, as a mental assurance from my side.

That said, the following is the data (I am recording it in a spreadsheet, along with service details). See if you can calculate a better (correct) mileage from it:

                              19/12/2009 - delivery taken - 2.7KM - 1.9 litres*
                              27/12/2009 - first tank - 9.3KM - 10.25 litres
                              29/1/2010 - second tank - 380KM - 10.24 litres

                              * - (max possible amount that could be filled by Yamaha in reserve tank)

Point to be noted is that I started using the bike regularly from 9/1/2010.

                              • Hi all,
It was time for my gladi's service. Called up castrol bike zone and fixed a appointment for today (Saturday 6th Feb.). Arrived there at 9.30 am, asked for the mechanic who services my bike regularly, he is on leave. They said that he would be back on Monday, so either I can bring my bike on any week days, which is not possible as I need the bike to commute to office and the next week end I have some personal plans. Came back home, decided to service it my self. Opened up the carb, cleaned it with petrol. Cleaned air filter, still looks dirty, Its time I change it. Changed engine oil to Shell advance 4T. The bike is smoother now. Here are some pics of the carb.
