And I found these steps on a FB page:

    Carb tuning for optimal settings.

    1. Make sure the bike is properly warmed up i.e rip for 10kms.

    2. Put the bike on main stand.

    3. Raise idle to the max you can. In my case it was around 6 or 7k.

    4. Close the AFR i.e clockwise till it stops, and be gentle. Now idle will drastically drop and keep fluctuating.

    5. Open AFR 1/4th a turn at a time and you'll see the Idle starting to rise.

    6. Open till you reach a point were the idle stops fluctuating and remains constant.

    5. Now open abit more and the idle will drop, so go back gently to the point where idle doesnt drop and doesnt fluctuate.

    6. Now set idle back to 1.4~1.5K (1.8K in my case)

    7. Done!

Honestly I have never tried them, so please try them at your own discretion.

Will be glad to know and correct myself if anything in the above is wrong.

Awesome steps, atleast now we know something about the carb setting of LOTS

If that was the case then the FE figure you are getting will not be correct. Secondly, if you are getting 40 kmpl then its absolutely fine. If it drops below that and hits say 35 kmpl then that is a matter of concern which clearly means that the tuning is running rich. I still doubt that they have fiddled with your carb.. as i have been visiting the workshop for over 2 years now and they have never done this to any of the rides unless they have been asked or annoyed to the core by mileage hungry Junta!

Thirdly, if you still continue to ride her at 60 kmph = 4000-4500 rpm.. you will end glazing the sides of the engine cylinder wall, if i have understood Mik's points correctly. Post 500 kms as per the manual, you can take her upto 6000 rpm. and post 1000 kms (replace the engine oil again!!) you are free to rev her. Anyways visit the workshop, tell the head mechanic that you are getting too much mileage and the engine is running lean, as a result of which the engine is starving of fuel. Tell them to open up the spark plug and see the colour.. that will give you a sure shot sign that your engine is running lean. Tell them to make the mixture stoich. Which engine oil was being used?? was it Motul or else Yamalube.. as per the latest reports Yamalube mineral oil is crap!!

I am not able to get it what you mean by engine vibration. Anyways, the vibrations may have increased because of lean tuning. Ask them to check if they have adjusted the chain too tightly or kept it too loose.. that may increase the vibration. Besides that i cannot pinpoint the exact problem without looking at your ride in person. The head mechanic would be your best friend to hep you detect it. Please understand mate that they cannot resolve everything at one go 100% they are human after all. And sometimes the root cause may be as minute as tightening a single bolt. So what i suggest that you visit the workshop at 10:00 am sharp and let the SVC head look at your ride when there is not too much rush at the workshop. They are lightning fast so your problem should get resolved in minutes. Correct tuning and upkeep is a must.

I am still not in Mumbai so haven't had the privilege to check out the new workshop yet nor got the chance to start working on my RC build!

      Cheers,

Today i opened my bike's Spark Plug and noticed a whitish brown tint on the spark terminals, now please tell me whether its fine with my bike's carb setting or do i need to do anything else.
There are three types of colours with the spark plug terminals as far as i know, but i dont know the meaning and effect of them on the bike's mileage
      1. Brown - this is my situation now
      2. Bluish - need explanation
      3. Black - this must be worst condition and carb should be tuned(please show some light on this )

And as far as YAMALUBE is concerned i do get a strong feeling that its not good after my first service.
They filled in YAMALUBE and i can feel the heat even after a simple ride
Now i have covered 1500 kms, i did my first service after i have covered 1300 kms(30 days).
To mention, i changed my engine oil at 600kms in shell outlet as i got a strong feeling that engine is struggling a bit, to my surprise the oil is so dark when i changed it at 600kms.
I used shell Rimula 20W40. It was all fine till 1300 kms, after that, when the oil is changed to YAMALUBE during my first service, i started worrying a lot.

Fellow Xbhpians correct me if i have done anything wrong to my bike...

      • Re: Yamaha FZ-16

Can anyone suggest what tyres i should put on my FZ? After around 33,000kms, most of those were long weekend rides, my tyres have developed cracks and have started balding.

I asked around and heard that Dunlop is a good rear tyre but tey havent made one for the front so i'll have to stick with MRF up front.
I dont want to mix and match.

        Any suggestions?

PS: I have tubes in both tyres because if the air leakage caused by slight bend in the rims which is a problem faced by many as i've read.

Post a picture of the Plug esp the firing tip clearly showing the different colors.
You used Shell Rimula ? what was your experience with it ?
Till recently both Yamalube and Motul were manufactured in India by same company.

Engine heating might be normal and if you are still in doubts then take the babe on empty stretch and rip her to the maximum and see if it goes beyond 100 or 105 without too much struggle. Check the mileage and see if it isn't too low or too high.
I don't really think it is important to keep an eye on the engine oil level every 100 kms for a normal engine. Don't you think that is too much?

I will post a snap of my Spark plug tomorrow/Saturday, but currently it shows brownish White only.
I would like to know the characteristics of the various colours we come across with our plugs.
Yes i used Shell Rimula and it was great. That too during my run in period(600-1300km).
I even took a 100km trip during that period and my bike was doing perfectly fine.
Now i am thinking about draining and retaining the YAMALUBE from my engine and fill a brand new SHELL Rimula as i feel excess heating

Personally, i always advocate Motul brand as i have had a very good experience since, the last two years. Mineral oil does turn black quickly due to oxidation when it comes in contact with the air and then also with your engine running. Actually the colour turning black is not exactly the right parameter to judge the condition of the oil Take one drop of engine oil in between your finger tip and close and open your fingers.. if the oil is sticky then it still has the properties to lubricate properly. If it is runny then the oil has lost the lubrication properties and only the base oil remains. A good engine oil is a must as it also acts a a heat exchanger/coolant; cooling the engine.

What is your FE? if it is hovering around 40-45 kmpl then the tuning is fine from what i can understand. If the colour of the spark plug tip is chocolate brown then it is running stoich mix as explained in PSR Ji's diagram.

Try Motul mineral Oil 3000V 4T 20W 40. Costs the same as Yamalube but your engine will feel much smoother and the engine heat will reduce. I would recommend that you try Motul Semi Synth oil 300v 4T 15W 50 "single ester" as that is one of the best grade oils you can find in the market say once your free services are done. Will last around 3000-3500 kms. You can get in touch with Motul representatives from the website or else shoot a mail to atlantic lubricants they can arrange home delivery in major cities if the nearest Motul retail shop is very far from your home.

                • Bought new black & green Fazer

                  Hi folks,

This is my first post. Thanks a lot to everybody for discussing so many things in this forum, which I didn't know previously. I've bought a fazer in the last weekend (black and cyber green colour) . This is my first bike. Just wanted to share my joy with you people . As my office is in a different city, I stay away from my hometown on the weekdays, so I'll be able to ride my lovely bike only on saturdays and sundays .

Please visit the dealer as you have finalised the bike and stuck with color/edition. You anyways have to go there to ask the delivery time and all.

Frankly anything you buy from the showroom will not be unique. What you do with the bike after is what will make it unique.

Get some valve caps off a Fazer if you really want to stand out from the crowd Or better yet, get blue headlight fluid instead of the factory yellow. Makes your lights perform much better.
