My advice to you would be to stop thinking about FZ and mileage at the same time. No matter what the dealership/review says.. in a city like bangalore you wont get more than 43 km/l on even the new version no matter how you ride.
This bike will never fail to disappoint you on the mileage front.

    • Hello guys, first time poster here. Been around for a while. Have been silently reading this thread. Had promised not to post untill I read all the pages of the ownership thread. Yeah I know that sounds crazy but that is how much I love my ride.
I returned to India after 4.5 yrs in Japan and I was dying to ride. So, I desperately wanted to buy a good bike on my return. RE TBTS was my dream bike since college days and was planning to book it. But couple of my friends had not so good ownership experience (no offence!) and advised me against it and suggested me FZ16. I checked it on the internet on Yamaha website and it was love at first sight. Straightaway next day went for test ride but test bike was not available and I saw it in flesh (or metal :P) and my love just grew deeper. Booked it anyways (even without test ride!). Got the delivery on 02-MAY-12 and the moment I rode it first I felt a special connection. I had TVS victor (please don't judge me it was dad's choice, I wanted pulsar) during college days, never felt anything special it was just a bike. But FZ feels special, it makes you feel special when you seat on it. So, that made me curious to understand it better and get to know about it more and more. That's how I came across this awesome forum. I have learnt so much right from chain lubrication, best oil etc. Thanks a lot to everyone who contribute here.
Its been 4000-odd kms so far and I have loved every moment of it. One major issue I encountered was speedo, odo, trip just stopped working one fine day but fuel display was working. Took it to svc and they said sensor gone bad due to cut to the cable. Replaced the sensor and now everything is fine. Headlight disappoints me though, tried focusing and everything but still not good enough. I am planning to go for HID, will ask my queries about it some other time.

P.S. One of my friend from Pune told me he got a call telling him that there will be a free service camp on 13th & 14th Oct in Pune. Also, lucky draw winner will get YZF R1 . So Pune guys try your luck and give some treatment to your rides.

      • I would suggest dont go for fz/fazer if you are concerned with mileage... i own a Fazer and it never gave me mileage on more that 37/38 even with sane driving. if you are ok with 35-40 then go ahead else back-off

        • FZ-X in Coma

          Hi All,

came to know through my elder brother that after over two months of lying inactive yesterday my brother suddenly decided that he should take my ride out for a spin. When he tried to start the bike, the red light (engine warning) came ON and there was no cranking, nothing.

So i deduced the obvious reason behind this was since, none of my roomies ever bothered to ride her even once in these 2 months of me being out of station.. the battery is dead!!

As i still have some time left to finish my workload while being out of Mumbai, i have requested one of my friends to take her out, get the battery electrolyte/distilled water topped up, charged at a charging station and check if post charging, the battery is still giving out 12+ volts output.. if lesser then i will replace it with a 9 amps AMARON battery as i am going for RC power up parts upgrade anyways and may opt for future HID mods later.

I have also requested my friend to completely drain the petrol tank and drain the carburetor by unscrewing the carb draining fuel screw. Fill in fresh fuel and then try to bring her to life. Since, she is the 2nd iteration of this product, she only comes equipped with an electric start option and no kicker (Thank god!!).

So the simplest way to start her would be, keep the Fuel knob on RESERVE mode, engage 2nd gear, request one of your strong friends, neighbour or the building security guard to push your ride from behind while you are siting on her, keep the clutch engaged while the person at the back is pushing your ride, once you have attained a speed of 10+ kms, blip the clutch, the engine will try to start once or twice and then will finally come to life.

One will have to accelerate a bit more and may see black plum of smoke coming out of the exhaust which is normal.

Once i return, along with the mods, she will receive a complete overhaul and i will also get the wheel bearings, chain and suspension checked for greasing or any other anomalies which may have cropped up because of such a long period of non-usage. Engine oil grade will be shifted to mineral oil as i would be doing re run-in with the 180cc power up parts courtesy Race Concepts.

As always Kamla Yamaha, Mumbai SVC to the rescue! They will do the check ups post the heart transplant taken place and will grease, check and replace whatever is necessary and needed by her.

          Cheers,
A quote by a toilet, " use me well, keep me clean, i would never tell anybody whatever i have seen.." :P

I'm 2012 owner of FZ-16 (July) and I have ridden this bike in both ripping and sane mode and I'll tell you the mileage is between 39-43 km/l and that's the range. SVC guys simply telling you will get 45-50 km/l but I don't think that's gonna happen. If you just want to ride the bike sanely then you need to choose the Honda ones and you won't regret buying them. What you get from FZ is butter smooth gear shifting, Great cornering, and Initial pickup. If you are ok with 40km/l mileage then surely you will get that with half ripping and half sane riding.
            Cheers
I don't look for mileage bro. With the honda bikes I dont like the looks of any except Hunk, which I heard has many issues. I personally prefer FZ only. I was curious to know about the SVC guys' claim thats it. Anyway thanks bro and yeah 40kmpl is more than enough for me.

And guys the showroom guy was claiming that SZ-R would be powerful while riding than FZ owing to the decreased width of rear tyre. Is it true or is he just trying to manipulate his sales figures?

And does FZ-S have dual disc brakes or only front?

            Thanks

kmpl of FZ is always a debatable gorund!! I rode old FZ when i use to get 40kmpl, Currently people say new FZ series has better tuned engine which gives 40-45kmpl.

FZ series in INdia never came with a dual Disc, only front Disc. But people are getting it mod to rear disc also.

If you not speed junky then FZ is best, else FZ takes time to reach 100-120kmph....When others will gain it quickier then FZ. FZ riding in city is unbeatable with comfort.

Thanks for your piece of information bro. Since most of my bike usage will be for office going or in the heavy traffic Bangalore roads, I think it suits me.

Yamaha has very reliable engines which makes it good lifely races. FZ won't dissapoint you in daily city ride, But remember don't expect kmpl more than 40-45kmpl any day, you will love the comfort.

                      Post the pic.

Sorry man, this time I'm not too bias on FZ-16 because there is too much demand for FZ-16 here that SVC guys are sitting on our heads, they are not doing any good work according to the manual. They are just waiting for the free service to get over then charge for each work they do - Right from engine oil changing to breakpad cleaning. That's why I'm encouraging guys to take some other bike if they are too much keen on mileage.

Take this FZ-16 to zig-zag single road and with lots of up and downs (terrain area) then you will know why it's called Lord of Streets.

On straight roads it is definitely underpowered, after 90km/hr the struggling starts. If you want to get some initial punch and If you are seriously interested in some more power and more mileage out of fz-16 then you need to get your bike joelled with 180cc bore kit and for that you need a big heart. It's not easy to get the new bike under knife, there is pain but there is gain and it's worth.

My favorite bikes were Karizma and Duke but both were dropped because of mileage. My friend's Duke is not even touching 30 km/l in city rides it's like taking a car and not the bike.

i own a 2009 FZ : its definitely a good bike real head turner because of the awkward style( my mother says it: she also says its only for rouges maybe she does not understand styling)

its good for city roads but not for highways performance is real good till 90km/hr

real bad ride quality in bad roads feels like bullock cart

mileage is industry average can expect 45kmpl if u drive real slow

it gave 37kmpl for me for hard accelerating and 30-32 kmpl in highway for long rides (ofcourse in full throttle)

                                maximum speed is 115km/hr

i love its build its overall feel and quality

other bikes will feel like dud if u ride fz for few months

and service centers really sucks real bad guys working as mechanics they are real close to textbook definition of idiots they wont even open air filterbox for cleaning it

front disc brake is excellent and rear brake is a dud one really useless

really not the bike for a high speed highway cruise
