Make 20W40 your first searching priority, not 10W40. If you cant find that, then look for a different 'before-W' number.. but stick to xxW40 in any case.

    • i have started using veedol's full synth 10w40 for fz..... the acceleration and milleage has increased a bit....

what do i need to tell to yamaha servicing people about this problem. how do i explain them, does any one facing the same problem on their fz? sometimes i cannot change my gear. my bike is about 1 and 1/2 year old now.
        any solutions?

        • I have a prob. Last service I got my fz a bit tuned toward mileage. 2 days back, I was going at a speed of 80-85km/hr and I heard a misfiring noise. Since then, my bike which was super smooth has become suddenly rough to ride.
When I ride, there is a sort of vibrating or something inside is shaking etcc.. What would be the problem>

lil more info .... like where is the sound coming from ? i generally get a harsh engine sound similar to what u described for sometime wen the bike is continously ripped and then it goes off and it settles down ( love this phase ) ... check if this is the case ... else get to the SVC again ...
People ask me , why are you cribbing about the BHP ? to them I say "MORE is never ENOUGH" xbhp.com

Well, there seems to be strong vibration from the engine itself and that too at all speeds. I tried putting the bike on center stand and putting all gears, but the sound is not much pronounced then. There seems to be a general roughness to the ride. Air pressure is correct, no engine overheating and there is not much drop in mileage. ( For a tuned engine, when I ripped off at 80-85km/hr, I still managed to get 41.)

Anyway last service, I didn't change the oil. Is this connected to oil change?

              • that would depend on the oil and the number of kms you ran on it ... mineral oil with 1.2k kms may warrant that behaviour...

nd also.....is it necessary to change the oil in every servicing??

                  • i suppose the rs220 oil is mineral and rs480 oil is semi synthetic.. semi synthetic oil lasts longer and protects your engine better.. it is necessary to change oil if you do heavy mileage.. but if you do like just 700kms in 70days then no need to change but it should be changed atleast every 2nd service.. you seem to be doing average.. you can go either way.. your choice.. if you have the money go for the semi synthetic.. many say it "Feels" better.. i do some 5000kms every service and i use mineral.. i don feel the need to change..

the rs 400 oil is the semi synthetic version of yamalube which they are using in R15 DO NOT use that oil as it is of not the same grade and may cause damage to the engine in he long life. although if you want to go for the semi synth go for motul or castrol or veedol but always xxW40 grade oil in FZ do not change the number after W.

the mineral oil has a life span of arnd 2k kms, the semi synth can go upto 3-3.5k and the full synth goes uptill 4.5k kms.... but yeah the oil also deteriorates even if the vehicle is not in operation so its better to change the oil once in 3-4 months.....

i beg to differ.. you dont seem to understand what these grades mean.. the semi synthetic if am correct is 10-50 while mineral is 20-40... it simply means the semi synthetic has wider operating temperature range than the mineral (in lay man terms better) NO HARM TO ENGINE !!

yamaha, if you had ever read the manual, recommends changing the engine oil every 3000kms and yamaha recommended oil for fz is the yamahalube 20-40 oil.. do you mean to say yamaha is wrong and everyone should start changing oil @ 2000kms? semi synthetic oil can work upto almost 4500kms and synthetic 6000kms (a very conservative estimate).

i would request you to advice members based on facts rather than hearsay !

dude you will have no troubles man.. either with the oil or short bursts of speed.. just dont continuously maintain the speeds !

nah dont worry about that..next time just get a W40 grade semi-synth oil

the grades give you the viscosity at 0 degrees and 100 degrees. this doesnt mean a higher operating temperature. The engines of fz and r15 have different revs in the various gears and the corresponding oil viscosity must be different and should not be changed.Thats why its better to use the same grade engine oil.
about the life i might be wrong as that was told to me by the oil dealer....
