A very good approach! Just that he may change the engine oil as well. Even if the bike is ridden for few kms, it would lose some of its properties over long periods of time.

Hi guys.. What may be the reason for engine light randomly coming on while riding especially at slow speeds.. Sometimes it stays on for long time n sometimes its blinking very slowly.. Most times its not there..

If it's of any help additional info is as follows:
Bike was stationery for last 2 months, had to push start it

Engine get hot enough to notice it..

Runs on 500 kms old mineral oil from motul

Battery is 2 yrs old but seems good as per the battery service guys

Carb cleaned a few months ago after ride to spiti

5yrs and 50k kms old ride this is..

Any thoughts ? Dont wanna straightaway go to svc for the simple reason that they have no other suggestions apart from replacing costly parts

From my very little experience with FZ's the check engine light only comes up if the TPS is tampered with or if its getting irregular values.

Check for engine oil level ASAP.

IMO, change the oil and fill in with fresh oil. Also, check for tuning of carburetor.

Thanks buddy for your advice. Already my dad changed it once in the mentioned period. Could you please tell what should be the interval of the oil change in this scenario?

Once in 4-6 months with the procedure your dad follows should be fine.

Hi fellow bikers,

I own a Yamaha FZ16 (2009 model) with about 30,000 kms on the odo. Since the past few weeks i have been facing a perennial as well as irritating problem with the bike. When i start the bike, it idles irregularly. At first I thought it shall subside after few minutes, but this continues on an on. While riding in Bangalore traffic, there seems to be a massive power loss in pickup and acceleration. Wringing the throttle and releases a lot of black sooty smoke from the exhaust. I generally ride below 6000 rpm, but during short bursts of speed, I face a jerking action after 5k rpm uptil 9k rpm, with jerks appearing every 5-6 seconds. The bike feels out of breath by 75. I may also add that the bike has started making a machine like clink clink sound as if the valves are busted, and there seems to be a burning smell from the engine after 2 kms riding. Also, if i ride for lets say 30 mins or so, and stop and then start the bike after 5 mins, it just wont start. It makes a gurgling sound similar as if the choke has been pulled on. It starts after a good 8 mins or so, that too with a lot of black smoke and "dhuk" sounds form the exhaust (like a firecracker). What could be the source of this problem? Pls help me here. I desperately need your insight

Note : All these problems started appearing after 25k kms. The mileage has taken a toss. With a pillion, the bike feels very stressed. The engine has a very thumpier and vibrating beat, not at all smooth.

caferacer91..
Get the bike thoroughly serviced. Change the oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plug, get the carburetor cleaned. Hopefully the problem will subside after this.
A clogged air filer can cause irregular idle and makes the engine stressed.

Black smoke indicates improper combustion, either due to faulty spark plug or highly rich afr.

Ride safe and have fun.

Thanks for the quick reply, but i had the air filter replaced just 3 months back (3500 kms on the new filter)

also need your advice as to why sounds similar to busted valves is coming? I got the valves replaced around a week ago but the burning smell still persists
BTW I checked the spark plug, and it way quite black (maybe carbon deposits)

----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

Also Nadeem, should i go in for a new carb altogether? (pls tell me the approx. cost for this too)

Thanks in advance

1. How many kms have you put on the current spark-plug?
2. Is choke working properly?
3. Does engine-oil level stays put or reduces/drops over time with usage?

All the signs points to rich mixture.

Hi Sparkot,

Pls refer to the below replies:

1.Have put around 12000 kms on the current spark plug.
2. There is not much difference seen when choke is activated. I have mentioned before that after riding for 30 mins, stopping and then restarting the bike after 5 minutes leads to bike not starting; if i pull the choke during re starting it takes even more time to start
3. Engine oil level reduces over time ( not sure, will have to check today)

Whats the remedy for this? should i get the carb and the spark plug replaced with new ones?
