    Hi guys

After taking my FZ-S (21k odo; no mods; properly maintained) 5 times for hill ride, what I feel is the UPHILL ACCELERATION is very very low. The pulsar 150 guys are dusting my ride off. While overtaking the cars and buses I feel like I'm riding a 50cc bike. It's like I'm pushing it to go go go go but it replies simply "I can't" even though I'm keeping the rpm at torque band.
I tried with Fazer and it's d same story in hill ride.

While overtaking, I use to downshift if feel there is lack of power (after slowing down) and throttle up crossing torque band until it reaches power band; sometimes it's possible to overtake only in 2nd gear in uphill

But in plains it's different story! There is lack of initial pick up slightly but I can feel the power.

    My queries:

    1) Is this common in all FZ/Fazers or also in other 150s like pulsar/apache/hunk?

    2) Whether my riding style is wrong?

    3) Also the engine rpm is rising very slowly even after opening full throttle while uphill and it's rising steeply without even opening the throttle in downhill.
    Whats the reason?

Please let me know the proper riding style in hills (uphill and downhill) like where to keep the rpm in torque or power band, when to change gear, gear & throttle changes during overtaking, gear, throttle & braking in hairpin bends, etc

    Thanks in advance.

where is this "torque band" you talk () about?
What RPM's are you keeping the bike at when attempting to climb a hill.

Honestly there is bugger all torque in these bikes. If you want to get up a hill in a hurry or anywhere else for that matter you need to drop a gear or 2, full wide open throttle and change around 8k RPM or 10k.

No point trying to get up a hill in 3rd or 4th gear keeping it at 3500RPM.

I drop gears so my RPM is around 5 or 6k and then go for it, Otherwise it just takes too long to wait for the speed to build up.
I've gone up some very slight hills and it didn't really bother my bike (stock and modified) I just did what I wrote above, Drop down a couple gears and open her up.

In which gear you are seeing this problem..

While going uphill, lower gears should be employed.. There is no harm in riding in second gear uphill if you are riding at speeds which are typically of lower gear.

What is the altitude you are at?? If you are riding in hills like Himalayas, the carb settings needs to be changed to account for the reduction in air pressure.

I was pretty impressed by one statement Lucky Luke made some months back.. In hills the gear you employ for uphill.. the same gear should be employed down hill. Pretty simple.

        3) Also the engine rpm is rising very slowly even after opening full throttle while uphill and it's rising steeply without even opening the throttle in downhill.
        Whats the reason?

You are employing wrong gear uphill.. Engine rpm should rise fast uphill!! i.e you should employ lower gear and rip it till it cant pull further. Guys breakin in their bikes on hills often ask is it ok to let the bike go at higher rpms(than the once specified in the manual) and the answere is - Yes, if remaining at lower rpms jeopardize your safety in any way.

Hello @toxic biker bro even my babe is 9 months old.. Had already done electrical mods... never touched the mechanical part as i am quite happy with it... just wanted a little more grunt from the exhaust...
great bro....what electrical mods you have done till now bro....I am looking for some HID or something like that for better illumination at night while riding on highways...and yaa if you want some extra grunt you can go with Daytona exhaust it comes from Yamaha only...guess wont harm the warranty...

@Toxicbiker: I have pressure-washed the disc only once.Won't do it anymore,it needs a cleaning though. The SVC never done it in 6 months. Rear drum brake has been cleaned, though. Need to meet you, man.I think my ride has lost some of its smoothness, thanks to some changes in clutch settings by the SVC.Not sure, hence need some clarification from you.
@Raj157: Used the thing only once bro, will upload a video soon.Thanks.For the time being,u can see the video which inspired me. Why don't we wait for a few more days and order a pair of FFEs from Joel?

Bro never tried uphill or downhill as we really don't have hills nearby Kolkata.. but can say one thing I have tried stiff bridges and slopes like that.....never felt that problem..guess you are not keeping your bike on the proper power band...you should keep the rpm in the right range..as far as my knowledge goes...if you keep the needle in 5-7k range for a 20-25degree slope you need to be in 2nd or preciously 3rd gear will do..slope more than that require more rpm and low gear....

Seriously? wow, so much for common sense...
I can't believe people would ask such a question, How else can u get up a hill with low rpm (on a FZ bike of course) without pushing it....Running in engine or otherwise.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with reving your engine. What is everyone so afraid of? Oohh thats right, mileage

Yes, there are some questions which appear very silly at times.. The funniest query I remember - Can I do full tank during engine breakin??

you can definitely go for HID's... it wont be a problem... i am using 2 HID's for the last 7 months i think you have the kick installed.... you can ask speedy kol ... i have shown him the pictures of the hids..... ... i need that extra grunt for sure but i dont want something which will make others on the road hold their ears tight and cry while i pass them.... so no daytona for me bro....\

Just check whenever you sit on your ride.. do you sometimes get a smell of petrol even without switching the engine ON or keeping the Fuel knob OFF? If so then it is time to get the tank cleaned once and a dosage of System G will clean up rest of the dirt from the fuel lines.

Good to know that Rakesh and the rest of the gang are still keeping the overall work culture to top notch. Carb seal/valve? possible.

If you have done just 3k with the new seals and fork oil then the root cause are the coneset rings.. greasing and tightening should do the trick. Kamla Yamaha doesnot have DOT4 in stock if i remember.. they have DOT3.. DOT4 is better if you do a lot of highway rides as DOT3 has a lower boiling temperature.

                  Cheers,
No petrol smell while starting. I have a fuel lock due to fuel robbers (bloddy a** if they can't afford petrol why do they buy a bike). So I remove the key from fuel lock when it is at OFF position (it is designed that way).

Let me try System-G next time during my tank full. BTW from where do I buy it in Mumbai?

Got these things fixed from SVC on saturday.
                  1. Valve assembly in the carb was replaced - 1400 Rs + 250 Labor
                  2. Front tyre bearings were gone. This is why a loud thud was heard everytime I went over a pot hole. This sound has disappeared after the replacement - 230 Rs
                  3. Brake oil was low. SVC topped up the brake oil and the bite is back. Lets see if it stays this way or not.
Overall again the SVC did an excellent job and gave my bike back with all the work in 2 hours.

Hmm...this is the season you will be getting the rust....apply some grease and oil during cleaning of these metal parts and ya keep you bike dry...after a ride in the rain always clean and rub with a dry cloth....rest will be fine...

                              • Good to join the club. I own a 2010 Yamaha FZ-S (Green) or should I say she owns me. I fell in love with this beast the moment I saw her. But had a lot of problems in procuring her(not financial). Anyway I love the way she rides and the grip of the beast is so good at cornering that sometimes it gives you the scare. I have taken her to about 110kms/hr and she is steady as a horse. And wheelies are a piece of cake with this beast.

Smile at everyone you meet and make someone happy.
