Today i had taken my bike to the service center to tell them that i still can hear the tappet noise. The service center is approximately 10 minutes riding distance away from my house and when i had been there the bike wasn't making a lot of noise. The mechanics couldn't find any problems. In fact its been an week when the same service center has worked on the tappet noise issue. I am posting a you tube video. Need your opinions on the same.

They couldn't find any problem because when the engine gets warmed up the tappets expand and don't make much noise(about 90% of sound goes away).Originally posted by shatur87700 View PostToday i had taken my bike to the service center to tell them that i still can hear the tappet noise. You need to have a very cool engine to diagnose and adjust the tappets perfectly.
If tappets are adjusted on a hot engine ,the tappets will make noise again when the engine gets cool.
EDIT
Can you make a new video ?
the bike must be left unused for at-least 3 hours before making this vid.
Shoot video at idle rpm and also at engine revving at 4-5k rpm and then at idle.Last edited by shoeb2015; 01-20-2012, 01:41 PM.

That was extensive, thanks!Originally posted by shatur87700 View PostJust check if there are any scratches on the body of the bike, get all the papers from the dealer. If you are taking the delivery of the bike with the number then ensure that you get the number plate work done the same day to avoid further hassle. Check the headlight [upper/dipper], side lights, brake lights are working fine. On my bike they had to adjust the headlight as on upper, the headlight beam used to go somewhere else. Ensure saree guard is fitted, side stand, side mirrors as well. Finally, fill up good quality fuel, ride the bike for some time after you fill up some fuel on the same day. Check for any problems, like i had and get that fixed the same day [i hope you dont have one]. As far as accessories, a seat cover should be a better buy, i don't feel a need for a grip on the handles. Also buy a garage cover. Also on the back of the bike above the tail light you will see a handle. If you can get some kind of cover for that you will save your bike from scratches, i have scratches on that handle. Pillion rider with a bag on the back caused that damage.
Ride safe. Respect the people on the road while you ride. Enjoy the ride

For proper setting of the valve clearance of the tappets, the engine must be left idle for around 3 hours.Next time ask the mechanic to use feeler gauge while setting the clearance. The recommended clearance is 0.08mm(intake) and 0.1mm(exhaust).Here are some pics of tappet setting I had done on Unicorn a a few days back...Originally posted by shatur87700 View PostToday i had taken my bike to the service center to tell them that i still can hear the tappet noise. I'll be getting my Unicorn (black) sometime this week (hopefully)..I did have a few questions on the things to be checked before taking delivery of the bike but those were answered in the previous page!
Now can someone let me know what are the things I need to take care of on the new Unicorn? I'll stick onto the 4k/40 kmph speed before the first service but is there anything else that I need to take care of?
{any kind of maintenance/service/petrol/wash/any small stuff}

My Boss who is an avid Biker, once told me when i asked him about the run in period. He told me that he who manufactures the engine knows it best. Stick to whats said in the user manual. Logically thinking that really made sense to me. He told me that different bike manufacturer suggests a different way to run in the bike. I checked the Honda's user manual. This is what they say "Help assure your motorcycles future reliability and performance by paying extra attention to how you ride during the first 500 km. during this period avoid full throttle starts and rapid acceleration."Originally posted by bikernoob View PostI'll be getting my Unicorn (black) sometime this week (hopefully)..I did have a few questions on the things to be checked before taking delivery of the bike but those were answered in the previous page!

This is all they have said. Well i would suggest that before you get your bike, please do some research on where would you get good quality fuel. Thats very important as bad quality fuel will damage your new engine. Ride like you normally would by avoiding full throttle starts and rapid acceleration during the 1st 500 kilometers. Remember, your bike would have all new parts and initially you are advised to pay some extra attention while riding is because the way you ride will decide the bike's life and efficiency/ Performance.
Just be normal. Do not panic. Just enjoy the ride.

Finally got my Unicorn yesterday. Filled up Rs 500 worth of petrol and drove home. The drive from the showroom to my house was butter smooth ..couldn't really find anything worthy of a frown!
This morning when I went to complete the puja formalities, I noticed a few reasons worthy of a frown.
1. I started the bike at around 7:30 am by using full choke and kick start. After keeping the bike on full choke for 20-30 seconds, I noticed the RPM meter went up beyond 2k then I cut off the choke and put the bike in gear. To my utter surprise, the bike behaved as though there was no petrol (you know that feeling when the petrol moves from 'ON' to 'Reserve'. What could be the reason for this? Should I use more of choke?
2. The gear shifting is not as smooth as I'd hoped it to be (or is it 'cos I don't have practice in the gear lever without the 'heel'?
3. The bike seemed to suffocate a little in 2nd gear; felt as though it didn't have enough petrol to run on!
4. The head light on low beam seems to be pointing towards the butt of the pillion in front of me; guess there's some adjustment to be made on that!

Got my Unicorn today evening, filled petrol, rode back home without any problems.
There were some marks on the tank, on pointing it out, the guy at Haiku Honda came out with some polish and applied it on that spot. Is that the 'TFC'? :/
Gear shifting was smooth, I just need to get used to this after using a 2-stroke 100cc bike for almost 3 years.
When slowing down (very slow speeds) it felt like the engine was off, it didn't though, when I closed the throttle, is that normal?
Also, is it important to turn off the fuel supply when the bike isn't in use?

I only got the bike in the evening.Originally posted by bikernoob View Post@^ did u face any issue with cold starts etc like the ones i've mentioned above?
I'll be sure to let you know when I take it out tomorrow morning.
EDIT:
I took the bike out this morning.
Tried starting it without the choke and it didn't work so after turning the choke on it came on instantly.
Didn't seem to be petrol deprived but when I was stopping the bike (400m later) the engine stalled in first gear, despite me using the clutch.

Try warming up your bike for 2-3 mins at 2000 rpm.Originally posted by bloomatk View PostI only got the bike in the evening.

You will see a change.

I'm facing some serious throttling issues on the bike (now ~ 80kms old)... the minute I try to accelerate beyond 40, it behaves as though there is no petrol left! This is not only when the engine is cold but also when I've done something like 10+ kms..
Can you let me know what the issue here might be and how I can get this corrected?
