My Honda CB Unicorn 150(2009 Model) gives a whining sound while riding, but never gives the same sound when bike is in neutral. When the bike is in neutral, how much hard I rev the engine, I can't here the noise. But while riding after crossing 3000 rpm in any gear it gives a whining sound. I can here the same noise in other old unicorns as well(new unicorn never gives that sound).

When I checked with local mechanics, one guy said that sound is coming from clutch plate, it needs to be replaced. Another guy said, it coming from the meter, if we service the meter whining sound will be gone.

Any thought on this guys. Thanks in advance

Countershaft bearings aren't expensive and yes it is a time consuming job as the crankcase is opened to access the bearings. Would require half to one whole day depending on the mechanic.

Are you confusing with the smoothness of the Honda! Usually engines have a sweet whine to them, most engines do have some whine to them. As long as the whine occurs at certain RPMs especially during engine braking it's perfectly normal. If you find constant rattling or a whine that is distinctly different from a engine whine, then it's imperative to get it checked. Do post a video or a sound clip if you can, would help us get an insight as to the issues you're facing.

        Cheers!

The Front MRF which came with my Unicorn has completed 70K kms (48K in Unicorn and rest in a family's Splendor) and can still go for some 5000 Kms.

Yes, As someone mentioned above, rubber becomes very hard after 4-5 years.

Customized double dome looks good but it is useless. My friend has one and it can only signal others that there is a vehicle coming by. Also it requires rework of many items costing money. Better stick to stock.

I have been using HP Racer4 Synth 10W30 for last 3 oil changes. Never felt any oil better in Unicorn that this one.

XXw30 will be thin than XXw40 in engine operating temperatures. So as per Honda's recommendations, better stick with 10W30.

I am happy to say that after using this oil, I am able to cruise at 6000 RPMs & 5th gear without any vibrations. Also I am getting 57-58 KMPL constantly (Average for last 40 litres of Petrol). I am fueling from a BP bunk owned by TVS or at Reliance at any cost.
Is the old unicorn 150 rated for 10w30 oil? Or is the new unicorn rated for that grade? 10w30 cannot possibly be suited for Indian summers.

My advice would be to stretch your budget a bit and get a new Bajaj CT100B. I believe you can get it for less than 40000 on the road and is a value for money bike.

My Chain was making a lot of khat-khat noise while accelerating. Found that the chain has extended to the maximum level.

I did some juggard in a professional way. Removed a couple of chain links with the bosh cutting tool i have. Changed the front Sprocket from 14T to 15T. The rear is stock.

Now 60KMPH comes at 4900RPM instead of usual 5100RPM.

I have run 1000 Kms with this setup. No issues so far. Mileage fluctuates between 50-55 KMPL.

This is the first time I am doing chain link removal and would not be recommending it.

Will be changing my entire chain-sprocket during the 61K kms service.
Why would you not recommend the removal of a few chain links? Is it detrimental to the chains strength? I have a 07 model too.

I am planning to do the rides ranging from 58 km to 300 km in a day. I need to do some modifications for converting the motorcycle to a touring machine. I am not looking for cosmetic or performance modifications.

Below are the modifications I am thinking about (but not sure how to go about them)

              1. Seating - I love the seating on a Unicorn 150. How do I make it better? I have decided on spacers for my stock handle bar to make it a little high. Is there anything I could do with the seat to make it more comfortable?

              2. Luggage - I am planning on using 3 of my back packs to carry all my gear and cloths since these would be all small rides. My question is, how much can I carry in KGs just in case of a bigger plan? Can I install metal racks on this bike and carry more weight? How much weight can a 150 cc bike carry?

              3. Is a bigger wind screen advisable?

              That's all.

I am 39, live in Nagpur, planning to go to all the jungle locations to start with in next one year. I am 5'11 and 92 KGs. I have done 2000 KM rides in past on 350 cc bullets and not new to riding. I am sure I won't face extreme terrain.

Am I good to go? What else can you suggest?

              Thanks in Advance.

Your weight and height dimensions are similar to mine. Did a 1500 km 4 day trip this may. Uni is capable of cruising at 60 relatively easily provided you use a good quality oil. I had changed to 7100 20w50 for that trip and it still heated up. Maybe I should have tried a 10w or 15w. Regarding load carrying capacity, uni is capable of pulling 200 kgs if condition is good. Unlikely that you will carry that much. With a 150 cc lighter the better I would say. Putting saddle stays will add between 5 to 10kgs plus your baggage which will be around 10 kgs I guess.

It recently started bottoming out even with a 60 Kg pillion. Am not sure what the reason is. Bike is at 60k.

It may pose a risk while riding if not done properly. I changed new sprockets last Sunday for my peace of mind.

There is no specific rating for old Unicorn. Initially Honda as well as Hero were using 20w40 for their 150CCs. If you refer the Unicorn manual, there is a chart provided which gives a suggestion of which oil to use depending on temperatures. I have used 10w40, 15w40, 20w40, 20w50 and now stuck with 10w30 as I felt it to be good. Received my order of 3 HPRacer4 Synth 10w30 from Amazon today, though I have filled Mobil 10w30 at 60000 KM oil change which I had purchased last month as HP was not available. Just 150km done with Mobil. So can't comment yet.

Would you have any idea of the reasons for the rear suspension to start bottoming out even with a 60kg pillion? Didn't used to happen 6 months ago. No cracks or deformity visible in the rear spring.

Hitting a pothole when riding with a pillion causes a thud sound in my Unicorn. When checked carefully, it is a small part of saree guard hitting the swing arm when shock is compressed. Also this happens only when the suspension is set to "Soft".

Try to change the suspension setting.

If it still bottoms out, then its time for replacement.

Between 1.75 Turns (1/4th of a circle * 7 times) to 2 Full turns from closed position.

Let us know once you did the changes.

                            Is the Air filter clean.
Another reason for hickups would be dirty or clogged carb.
If you are not sure how to remove and clean the carb, try to drain some fuel using the drain screw. It might bring out some dust.

If the carb is clean and properly tuned, you may rarely need the choke for cold starts and the rpm would not fluctuate.

No need. Leave the setup as it will be while the engine is in use. Just need to rotate the screw.

air filter is brand new.and carburettor is also cleaned.so settled at 2.5 turns.very little fluctions plus no need to use choke during start.
but what can be reasons for fluctuation's.they are not present during acclerating or cruising but while going down hill when we close the throttle fully the rpm shoots to 4k and slight hickups are felt.

Hi all, i just needed a small help regarding the indicators on honda unicorn. I wanted to install led light bulbs for the indicator(white ones), as unicorn has clear lens indicators. But when i fit them all 4 indicators come up irrespective of which side indicator you on. Someone suggested replacing the flasher relay and i did. But now only either the back both indicators work on led or only the front two indicators work. Ive to use halogen bulbs for either front or back coupled with led lights. Can anyone please advice me how can i use led for all 4 indicators.
