  • guys... i took a test drive today, kept rpm between 4k-5k. And a 70Kg pillion guy behind me.

    1) I hear a lot that R15s torque/power is stacked at 8K RPM and beyond (true ?) and may be that's why I felt no sudden surge of power/acceleration from stand still through 4 gears. Felt normal like any other 150cc.

    2) My leg (read as feet not knee) at ankle felt a bit cramped while toe shifting (may be i'm not used to toe shifting and sportier stance - I'm coming back to riding after a 3 year break and my old ride was pulsar 150). - can be ignored pretty much as i should get used to it i guess

3)Didn't have the big bike feel while riding, which I found it very much to be while parked in stand.

so darn hate to have second thoughts between R15 and cbr

    Sarvajit, .... anyone ?

        Coming to the ride,
Contrary to what was stated, I felt no difference in the initial pickup/power delivery whatsoever.
The showroom staff (pillion) was seated behind me in an awkward way with his hands on my shoulders. I didn't like it one bit.
The bike feels much higher than the V1, almost like a CBR in terms of ride height. The low slung sporty feeling is gone&it feels like a Fazer with a lower handlebar.
The handlebar is the same as V1 though the seat doesn't feel the same.
The rear seems to be heavy, sluggish&trying its best to keep up with the front on sharp corners/road undulations.
While getting off, I hit my foot against the rear panel. I expect this to happen to all people who ride the bike too.
Though the V2 looks like a bigger/more capable bike, all in all, I feel V1 was low slung, sportier, more in control, flickable&swift compared to V2.
        Just my thoughts once again.
Hey, thanks for the juicy inputs man. Had the pillion been a kudi, you must have loved it . Anyways, I may take a test drive of this v2 soon.

You can get both bulbs to light up with a little modification in internal wiring. Ask you ASC guy to help you with that.

              • Due to the unacceptable waiting period of R15 (7 months to be specific) I am now more inclined towards CBR 250R.

However, heard a lot of negative things like engine seize, poor finish of paint and plastic parts and unavailability of spare parts. I'd request the CBR 250R owners to please throw some lights on it. Any suggestion would be helpfull.

PS: Sorry for posting this on R15 thread..

even i was in the same dilemma till yesterday. One look at the yamaha has turned me upside down.previosuly i was obsessed with cbr,but after going through the ownership experiences im not at all satisfied that it can be a trouble free machine.Adding to this spare parts unavailability made me say no for cbr.
finally its ur choice if ur sure you can maintain the machine go ahead with cbr,it can bring you smiles

                    • R15 or Cbr dilemma - we are just tip of the iceberg.

I'm in same ship too, thought of filtering down my thoughts and hence this post is a post to myself.

Which bike do we want - based on your absolute necessity, is never going to help us guys.
WHY - Say your purpose is strictly narrowed down to either of these- touring, power, comfort, cornering junkie, superb handling - then any brain dead zombie would have picked the right bike.

Why these second thoughts arise for us - mainly because >80% of us are into nothing but daily commute (home-office-college), with occassional 100+ rides and we need performance machines.

Now this is as far as I heard from/spoke with, both owners.

                      What we know.
Build quality, handling, killer looks - R15

Awesome engine, amazing low-mid end torque/power, off roading - CBR

A few statements, questions and decision time:
If we wanted the cbr build quality (im not comparing and don't want to initiate an argument) to be as good as R15 then it would have put the price of cbr-std close to 2L, means cbr build quality is as good as any other machine but we shouldn't compare with R15.

Most of the cbr riders are facing no issues at all (be it built or performance) - just think about the period (2000-2004) where our only options were limited to pulsars and karizmas - we were happy whichever we took.

Now this has to given to us by new and old owners:
                      1) Would the R15 cruise comfortably (no strain on engine) at 110+ kmph (120+ is cbr territory i guess) for prolonged periods of time?.

                      2) Question to old owners - How does the riding position affect you in long run? After the initial mesmerizing sporty position and fun is over - did you guys wish for a normal tourer?.

                      3) Does R15 become no fun in terms of power after a year or two and keeps us wanting to switch to 250cc?. (This is assuming we are not into 200+ Km touring or our daily commute doesnt involve stretches of highways)

Sorry for the long post and thanks a lot for taking time to read through.

Sole purpose of this post is to help anyone who is in a pandemonium between the two

one test drive, thats it ! cbr - blew me away !!

things which mattered for change of decision:

                            R15
                            1) my 6 Ft lean figure meant i felt like sitting on a goat, toy-ish, i took pics went through them over and again.
                            2) changing gears - i dont know, some strange angle, tried to adjust by sitting back and forth - pain on ankle.
                            3) while test driving r15, didn't feel the punch - may be the power is stacked up 7.5K rpm and beyond (i was riding it between 4-5K rpm)

                            CBR
                            4) low end torque, wow, just wow! kept on pulling - didnt even have time to check the rpm it was that much fun.

additional info which i factored in while taking the decision:

                            1) cbr is just 42K away (onroad) from r15. 1.69K - Mysore
                            2) age factor - my college days are long bygones (subjective).

paid full amount - cheque, possibly in another week's time i would have my big red machine.

                              Hi MSKR

Got it from a car accessories shop named Autobahn here in Visakhapatnam. Costed me 8.5k. Brand is Osram Xenarc H4 Hid Kit. One year replacement warranty on all parts.

Initially I thought of going for projectors and Hid's but could not find a suitable guy here. Contacted some guys outside Vizag and did not get the reply I intended for.

I was actually in a hurry to get them done as the route I generally travel is port area and is poorly lit on top of that I encounter Trucks with high beams only.

Final intention was to go for projectors and HIDs but I need a good package where there is no light wastage and maximum output.

Hope this helps. For further info please mail me [email protected]

                              • V2 (Running-in) ride report.

                                Got Red & White R15 V2 on 17th Nov., 2011.

Posting a summary ride report here while detailed trip log cum ride report can be read here:

I left for Surat on 19th Nov, 9:30pm. Once I reached the Western Express Highway, traffic subsided and I was able to ride in higher gears.

After I crossed 500 kms on the odo I took the bike to 80 kmph by a slow and gradual twist of the wrist. It reached so swiftly at 5.5k rpm that I got really desperate to complete running-in and see its true colours. I came down to 3.5k rpm as soon as I touched 80. I did it just to apply pressure on the engine enough for it to blend in even deeper. After 500 km, I increased my rpm limit and kept driving within 3.5k to 4k rpms and after 750km, further increased to 4k-4.5k rpm with occasional touches to 5k rpm. The bike is darn fun to ride even in 4-5k rpm as well. The engine pulls up quite nicely.

Following is the speed at 5th and 6th gears:
                                At 3k rpm

                                At 3.5k rpm

                                At 4k rpm

                                At 5k rpm

Brakes of the bike are the best I have ridden with till date. I know I am talking about brakes of a new bike but I have ridden a brand new P220 and FZ also but these brakes are way ahead of what they were on those new bikes. I have checked sudden braking (combined with downshifting) from a speed of 60 and trust me, the bike comes in control within a flash. I would love to see their performance at high speeds.

During the ride some sound always kept coming from the engine even at 3.5k-4k rpm, like it comes when we are riding at lower rpms in higher gears. It remained so all throughout the ride. I am hoping that it gets fine at first service. Gear shifting is very tight specially going from 1st-2nd-3rd and vice-versa but its the most difficult for going from 2nd to 1st so hoping/expecting for it to get fine as well after first service.

Head lights are good. I would rate them 6 out of 10. The main focus (while on high beam) is straight ahead. In your lane you can clearly see ahead upto 15-20ft but the adjacent areas are quite less lit so if there is an obstacle in your path you will be able to see it quite in advance but you wont be able to see properly in the adjacent lanes to decide whether to change the lane and drive past the obstacle. When I was ALONE

Pillion seat is quite uncomfortable as told to me by people sitting behind me in the city. I would appreciate if somebody suggests a better way to attach something to hold without compromising the looks of the rear.

I am an average 5ft 10in guy. Dont go to gym but last month I used to do suryanamaskar regularly so because of that no wrist problem or any other problem. One thing I would add here is that I already had a bad break before I took the delivery of the bike. Delivery was right after my last paper and due to bad benches, I was not being able to sit properly during exams also. So seating position of R15 did aggravate my backache but I guess that due to the exercises, it was actually mitigated and hence under control.

I am further in love with this bike.. A masterpiece by Yamaha!!
