  • Cbr or R15 dilemma

Hi to all the confused creatures like me who are yet to know the performance of the Yam R15 V2...

The R15 has been tested and its true that the bike has indeed gained with all the ECU work done by Yam..

The true top speed of the bike is 131!!! and on the speedo it is 141!!

It is on an average 4-5 kms faster in the top speed than the previous version, so Yam have been correct in claiming that the bike has faster top speed than V1.

The accleration is same as V1 till 110!! with no major difference... the bike can do a 0-60 in 4.9 secs and 0-100 in 14 secs...

The most important part is that the bike is more luggable and doesnt struggle at the low revs like the old one..

I test drove the bike and with me (Im 6ft 2in and 95kgs) and a pillion (show room guy) I could move without any difficulty on a speed breaker at 13kms on the meter in 3rd gear!!!! unbeleivable..

I tried the same thing on CBR and we were at 20 on the meter and was in 3rd gear and the rpm in 2.5K.. the bike struggled so much and was lively only above 3K rpm...

so I can conclude the bike has more luggability in lower rpm (below 3K) than CBR, so useful for city driving..

For all the tall riders, I was at my limit with my knees on the R15's tank knee recesses... It is manageable and can be ridden by tall guys like us...
Offcourse the CBR has much more space and is easy for tall guys...

the kick or the rush that comes in from 3K rpm in CBR is a treat though... probably unmatched by the Indian biking scene at this moment...

The test drives are just my perception and some might disagree but the acceleration and top speeds are GPRS tested by the top mags and are genuine...

    time to rejoice then!!

    • R15

      Hi All,

Forgot to mention, just the touch and feel of the panels around the bike was enough to tell that R15 has far better quality levels than CBR!!Example: The CBR test bike had the left mirrors hanging down with a rusted nut!! and the hind panels around the seat were pathetic in quality and Ive seen a CBR (a used one in a mall) which had 1/2 inch gaps between the seat and the panel in both sides!!

R15 for me looks that we bit better than CBR too...

The smoothness (vibration levels) were same on the 2...

The clutch and Gearbox were just too good on CBR and surprisingly for a Yam, I had a false neutral and a mis shift in my short test drive on R15!!

The brakes were awesome on R15, better than CBR...

The flickability was also better on R15, naturally since its wheel base is smaller....

Riding position slightly more sportier on R15, and as expected the style and comfort are attached to it as pros and cons....

      These were my other obersvations......

      Happy riding

        Doesn't the V2 have a longer swingarm?

@pravin.murthy: The old one was claimed at 130kmph true. Speedo indicated speeds are different in every bike depending on air pressure etc. etc. There are some who have even touched 150kmph on their speedos!

@soojy007: The rush starts from 7K RPM&goes all the way upto the redline-after a few months you will learn to stay in the powerband&exploit all the power.

        • Hi Sarvajit,

As per my understanding goes, say if a bike, clocks 131 true with 141 on speedo, Its not possible for another bike of the same model to clock 131 true with a 150 on the speedo isnt it?

The old one (R15 V1) could do only 124 and 124.5 in 2 of the magazines report but on the other 1 it could do 130+ true....

The new one (R15 V2) has done 130 and 131 in 2 magazines so far...

What it indicates is the consistency with which it can 130+ top speed because of the better top end on the V2.

Thats what I was referring to...

Remember these top speeds are not tested just in 1 run.. Its about riding the bike consistently from point A to point B and back from point B to point A immediately to negate any backwind difference and then they take the average of it.... to check its top speed....

So that way the new R15 V2 is more capable...

Also a CBR, in down and slopes, can do a top speed of 155 kmph true!! but on an average run, its top speed is only limited to 145+ true thats it.....

          Regards

          Happy riding

The R15 can cruise comfortably at 100kmph al day. 110kmph constant is pushing it just a lil too much.

            2) Question to old owners - How does the riding position affect you in long run? After the initial mesmerizing sporty position and fun is over - did you guys wish for a normal tourer?.

My R16 is 1 and a half years old with 30,000km on the ODO. After lots of long tours, including 600km+, I've begun to wish for a much more comfortable bike. Im 5'9" and yet the R15 feels cramped for tours.

            3) Does R15 become no fun in terms of power after a year or two and keeps us wanting to switch to 250cc?. (This is assuming we are not into 200+ Km touring or our daily commute doesnt involve stretches of highways)

This is something you'll experience with any bike, the want for more power. Touring experience has taught me that a 250cc will be more than enough for our Indian road conditions. Optimum mix of power and fuel efficiency. The R15 does feel underpowered after the first few months, but for that you have Joel! Depends on your level of satisfaction with the bike. Lots of people I know will be happy with their R15s for life.

Sorry for the long post and thanks a lot for taking time to read through.
I hope I was able to answer your queries satisfactorily.

The engine does not feel strained at 120 due to the liquid cooling, but it actually is (FE drops). Cruising is utilizing around 70-80% of the power with remaining in reserve. That would be 7K RPM at which speed R15 does precisely 101kmph&returns almost 50kmpl.

              2) Question to old owners - How does the riding position affect you in long run? After the initial mesmerizing sporty position and fun is over - did you guys wish for a normal tourer?.
Touring wise, I wish for a bike which is around 50kgs. heavier&3 times more powerful than this-even a 250 won't do for me.
City wise, the bike is so well made that you won't like any other, not even 250s.

Answered above. I didn't like the Ninja/CBR coz I'm addicted to the aggressive posture of R15.

Yes, like I said earlier-different air pressures in both bikes will also give different speedo readings!

The difference is TOO less to be an upgrade for old owners bro!
Looks wise there is a radical change-if only it had a 250cc heart as well...

I'm currently using GT Oil in my R16 and I've seen its benefits first hand. I'd last done an oil change at 23,500km on the ODO and poured in GTOil soon after. ODO reading is 30,567km now and the same mineral oil is still running strong!! The bike feels smooth and 'free'. Definitely a must-try for everyone, atleast once.

Made a trip to Gokarna a few weeks and rode on horrible roads so my bike is in need of a good service. Lots of squeaks and rattles to be taken care of. That apart, the engine is free-revving and agile. This HAS to be because of the GTOil. Was very skeptical when I first tried out this oil, but now I'm a believer. I also heard that xBhp's 'Biker of the Year' is using this in his Pulsar 220.

ok, good that means you have run 7000kms with out an oil change, run another 3000kms and just add the gtoil ,
there wont be any maintance in the engine thats the GTOIL gaurantee and the engine will perform just like a new engine, just bocs of using GTOIL
is int that wounderful ,plus check the PUC if u feel, it will be almost ZERO,

Oh, a lot depends on the rider with this bike! So dont be too confident.
