Yeah that's true. BTW, you are doing it correctly. 30 and 35 PSI are correct for summer/hot areas.Originally posted by Andy_kristine View PostIn my city, its always summer. :-pYamaha YZF R15 V 2.0 (Oct, 2012 - Present)

Re: Yamaha YZF-R15 version 2.0
Is the engine roughness an indication to change the engine oil?? I keep my chain lubed every 200kms, and the engine oil is changed every 2k kms... I've been using shell ultra... The odo is now ar 7.4k kms and the engine is starting to act like it doesn't like to be revved higher than 5k rpm, though it is smooth at 7k and beyond... It isn't like how it used to be when the engine oil is changed. Slotting into neutral is also a big task now... It either goes into 1 or 2 or just gets stuck hard in these two. The same happened at around 5.8k kms and hence the oil was changed at 6k kms. I bought the oil right from the shell petrol bunk. I also change the oil filter each time the oil is changed. After the change, everything was back to normal and smooth. I'm just a normal rider who shifts gears at 4-5k rpm and goes cruising for long distances on weekends, no redlining at all. Now my question is, these FS oil claim to last for 4 to 5k kms but they seem to lose their smoothness at +/-1.5k kms itself, well that's how it is in my case! Can you guys clear my mind up on what to do? Everything is maintained perfectly on this bike till date and it has been taken care of like a gem! 150 days from delivery and odo is at 7.4k kms! Your suggestions please!

can you tell us what specifically u mean by "doesn't like to be revved"?Originally posted by Arvind Sibi View PostThe odo is now ar 7.4k kms and the engine is starting to act like it doesn't like to be revved higher than 5k rpm, though it is smooth at 7k and beyond... to diagnose such problems someone will have to ride the bike. u can ask a SVC mechanic to test ride it and (hopefully) coax him into giving u his (honest) opinion.
btw, changing gears at 4-5k and riding it gently is not the best way to treat ur bike's engine. u don't have to redline the bike always and ride like a wannable racer (or testosterone charged teenager lacking skill or judgement), but somewhere between those two extremes is where u want to be if u want good life and performance from the engine.

Firstly, I would like to ask you, if you don't redline your bike and shift gears at 4-5K RPM and cruise for long distances, why're you using FS oil as you're changing it anyhow at 2K kms?Originally posted by Arvind Sibi View PostIs the engine roughness an indication to change the engine oil?? Secondly, what is the grade of oil you're using? I hope you're using the correct grade as your location is showing as Chennai, most likely 20W*.Yamaha YZF R15 V 2.0 (Oct, 2012 - Present)

Re: Yamaha YZF-R15 version 2.0
I mean that I feel lots of vibrations post 5k rpm but it used to be free all the way before.... There is no fall in performance but the bike doesn't seem smooth when compared with my friend's one, that too by a huge margin. That's what I meant, no lugging and no redlining, but in between!Originally posted by incipient View Postcan you tell us what specifically u mean by "doesn't like to be revved"?

Please do correct me if I am wrong here... Is FS not suitable for long distances? The manual recommends 20w40 but I'm using 10w40. Yes I'm from chennai and the weather is scorching hot here for the past few months!Originally posted by ArnabC View PostFirstly, I would like to ask you, if you don't redline your bike and shift gears at 4-5K RPM and cruise for long distances, why're you using FS oil as you're changing it anyhow at 2K kms?

Re: Yamaha YZF-R15 version 2.0
FS is suitable for long distances of course. My point is you don't rev your bike hard, you shift at 4-5K RPM. So you can easily go ahead with a SS oil preferably Yamalube or Motul 5100 or any other oil which you feel comfortable. Why I'm prefering SS oil is you change oil every 2K kms. A SS oil can easily support you till 2.5-3K kms at half the cost and serve 80% of all the advantages that FS oil offer.Originally posted by Arvind Sibi View PostPlease do correct me if I am wrong here... IMHO, mostly when one should consider FS oil over SS oil:
1. Bike always revved moderate or high.
2. Shifts done at high RPMs.
3. Drain interval of 4-4.5K kms.
So as per your riding use, SS oil should do fine. And you'll get SS oil within the recommended grade. So, if I was you, I would be using SS oil with a grade of anything above 15W* or 20W*. You don't need a 10W* as you're from Chennai. And if you're bent on using a FS oils only then go for something with a grade of 15W* or 20W*. Motul 7100 can be your answer. And keep the oil for atleast 4K kms. And all are my personal opinions.

Re: Yamaha YZF-R15 version 2.0
**What is your claimed mileage?**
City ride(Heavy traffic of Delhi): 32-36kmpl
Highway ride: 42kmpl
1. What fuel do you use? Standard or high octane?
Standard fuel. I prefer Bharat Petroleum and HP. Indian oil is worst of all.
2. What comes first? Your service day or your kilometers?
Service Day. ODO has just clocked 6300km in a year.
3. Any fuel additives?
None
4. What tyre air? Nitrogen or regular? Pressure recommended by manufacturer or something else?
Regular. Front: 28psi, Rear: 33psi
5. When do you refuel? Once the tank is empty or halfway? Or do you always run on low fuel?
Before it hits low fuel warning indicator.
6. Preferred refuel timing. Day, night or no preference?
No preference.
7. Do you follow engine warm up rule? Or start and move?
On move. I ride for around 40kmph for first 2-3kms.
8. When did you do your first service? at 1000kms or end of 1st month?
1020km.
9. Did you follow manufacturer break-in pattern? Or Motoman? Or your own? If own, what was it?
Followed user-manual. Took 15 minute break after 30-40km continuous ride.
10. Did you always get the mileage your claimed? Or was is improved later? How many kilometers/months/services later?
All I can say is, R15 gives me better mileage than Honda Activa(Unless I'm riding on heavy traffic).
11. At what RPM do you usually shift? If you shift at say 5000rpm, but you know you wont go beyond that speed, do you shift at 5000rpm and let the revs lower or stay at 5000 rpm without shifting?
4-5k rpm for first three gears. 9k rpm for the rest of the gears.
12. Generally ,do you quickly accelerate to your shift revs or slowly get there?
Depends. Quick accelerate when I'm on highways. Though, I rode mostly in city only.
13. What's the general weight that comes on the bike? Your weight + pillion maybe + bags etc.
I rarely had any pillion with me. I weigh 66kg.
14. Where is your riding place? Moderate traffic, Heavy traffic, or open highway?
Heavy Traffic.
15. What is your maintained riding speed?
City: 55-60kmph; Highway: 110kmph
16. Heavy use of brakes? do you panic brake or brake at the last minute often? or come to a slow stop?
Yes, I have to use brakes a lot. Even I had to change my front brake pads in just 6k kms only. No, I never panic break.
17. Anything out of the box that you think help.
> Follow manual.
> Change oil filter along with oil.
> Always keep chain lubed.
> Cruise at consistent speeds. Be it highly congested city or open highway.
> Keep that in mind. If you ride along with pillion, you need extra air in your tires than riding solo.

Re: Yamaha YZF-R15 version 2.0
Without riding the bike it's anybody's guess. Do you regularly check the oil level? Also, the vibrations could be coming from some thing else such as the fairings.Originally posted by Arvind Sibi View PostI mean that I feel lots of vibrations post 5k rpm but it used to be free all the way before.... Re: Yamaha YZF-R15 version 2.0
Hey guys, been planning to change my tires for some time now and I'm not quite sure which to go for. I'm not that particular about increasing the size cuz i dont wanna alter the gear ratio by going for a bigger rear tire.
And I'm looking for something that's really good for cornering.
And does anyone have first hand experience switching to Duke 200 tires?Ride hard. Ride safe.

Re: Yamaha YZF-R15 version 2.0
question to those who have had their bikes' tappets tightened after it got loose, how much time did the svc guys take to do so ? i imagine at least half a day (5-6 hours) goes for it since i think i have read from people here that it needs to be done on a cold engine ?

Re: Yamaha YZF-R15 version 2.0
Hey guys,
A new R15 is being welcomed into the family this week and need your inputs for these things. Replies will be highly appreciated!
1. What all to look out for in the PDI. Any one have a PDI check list for the R15?
2. Can the stock battery be upgraded to something better?
3. Want to upgrade the stock bulbs to 60/55s. Will it require a relay or a direct fit will suffice?
4. What is the best oil to stick to for the initial kms and there after?"Never recreate from your memory, always imagine new places"

check all the things, paint for any scratches, oil level, coolant level, switches, lighting.. These are the normal things.
2. Can the stock battery be upgraded to something better?
No idea.
3. Want to upgrade the stock bulbs to 60/55s. Will it require a relay or a direct fit will suffice?
Use philips xtreme vision or osram night-breaker bulbs i hope the names are correct.
4. What is the best oil to stick to for the initial kms and there after?
Stick to Yamalube in the warranty period. If you don't care much, use FS oil (motul 700/300v) after a few thousand kms. And get the first service done at 400-600kms and follow the proper run-in procedure as mentioned in the manual.Last edited by nadz11.ns; 06-23-2014, 03:34 PM.
