Issue: When I turn 'on' the ignition, nothing starts up- no engine check, speedo is blank, starter doesn't work; can't jump start it either. Over the past few days, I keep turning the ignition on and off about 5 times to finally get the displays to turn up. Once it does turn up, the bike rides as normal, no variation in performance and engine does not kill itself during a ride.

History: This had been happening for a while now. I changed both the switch panels (including the kill switch one), and the issue still remains. Apart from these panel switches, the headlight cable is new, the spark plug is new (stock), and the battery is new (no issues with the battery, I'd know if it is).

Extras: Everything is stock. No aftermarket headlights or horns.

It's not the starter relay either, like I said, once the display comes on after a few ignition turns, everything is perfect. If anyone knows what the reason could be, please let me know. PS. I do not trust SVCs, would rather do it myself.

    Best,
Looks like a lose connection somewhere in the ignition wiring...Ur mechanic would need to locate the area of lose connection, open up the ignition wiring and fix it. No additional spares would be required in all probabilities.

      1. Tyre manufactures specify air pressure on the basis of cold tyre situation. There was time (late 80s and early 90s) when many of them use to give hot tyre pressure specs also. Nowadays Perelli is one of the few companies that recommends a hot tyre specification.

      2. These hot tyre specifications are normally in the region of 2 to 3 psi more than the cold tyre pressure recommended.

      3. What it essentially means is that every tyre has a tyre pressure range which has a cold pressure to begin with, which then increases as the tyre gets warmed up.

      4. So considering that with normal air, the correct running air pressure is 2 to 3 psi more than the cold tyre.

      5. With nitrogen it is claimed that the air does not expand as much as normal air. Therefore, it will not reach the operating band of 2 to 3 psi above cold tyres.

      6. Therefore, if nitrogen is used instead of normal air and the air pressure is kept at recommended cold tyre specs, it will be operating at below the optimum running tyre pressure. It will in fact be a under inflated tyre.

      7. Considering the above, if you are going to use Nitrogen, you may want to add 1 to 2 psi more than the recommended cold tyre pressure to compensate for the said property.
nice points. didnt know all these in detail

      • R15 Fork Issue

Hi all, I've done 25,500 kms on my R15 v2.0. Haven't changed the fork oil so far. The forks never leaked oil. Recently I had to change the Razor set of the fork (cone set they say). Before getting it replaced, the handle bar would get tighter all of a sudden while driving and when ever i hit a bump or a pot hole i get that awkward 'khat khat' kind of sound. Razor kit changed problem fixed for a while.

Now that the handle bar is alright, but i do get the 'khat khat' sound when i go on rough roads & I also feel the damping of the forks are not as tall as they were when I bought the bike. I had a mechanic inspect the bike, after a bumpy ride he said everything is fine with the fork, but he said the noise might be from the fork spring. He said that it would not cause any harm to the forks. Do i need to change the fork oil ? I'm afraid because one of my friend changed fork oil of FZ @yamaha svc and then on he's having a broken fork seal no matter how many times he change it, the seal breaks and oil leaks.

So 1) Can I change the fork oil ?
        2) Do I need to inspect the Razor kit again ? (Khat Khat sound issue)

For Chennai guys, Can you suggest some good mechanic for R15 around chennai ? Because Yamaha SVC has never solved any of my issues before.

As you have done good number of odo reading there
            1) go for periodic maintenance.
2)Your cone set is damaged and this happens in R15 with odo reading range of 24000-30000.
You need to get it replaced properly. Did the mechanic replaced it??? if yes then he has not placed it properly. If he hasn't then you have to get it changed. It costs around 3000 for coneset, don't remember the labor charge.
3)Service Manual do says for fork oil change but if you are not having any problem better dont give it a double thought, your fork oil would be good.
            4) Also get your fork alignment checked.
5)get all these things done at authorized Yamaha SVC.

            • Getting good mileage?

Okay, I want to know how to get good mileage. For that, I want people's experiences. People claim they get 40+ mileage on their bikes. But i have been stuck on 35 since day 1. I need to know what people do for that. Is it actually possible, or is it placebo effect? For that I think people need to share how they ride their bikes, throttle handling style etc. At least answering the below questions should help us all?

              **What is your claimed mileage?**

              1. What fuel do you use? Standard or high octane?
              2. What comes first? Your service day or your kilometers?
              3. Any fuel additives?
              4. What tyre air? Nitrogen or regular? Pressure recommended by manufacturer or something else?
              5. When do you refuel? Once the tank is empty or halfway? Or do you always run on low fuel?
              6. Preferred refuel timing. Day, night or no preference?
              7. Do you follow engine warm up rule? Or start and move?
              8. When did you do your first service? at 1000kms or end of 1st month?
              9. Did you follow manufacturer break-in pattern? Or Motoman? Or your own? If own, what was it?
              10. Did you always get the mileage your claimed? Or was is improved later? How many kilometers/months/services later?
              11. At what RPM do you usually shift? If you shift at say 5000rpm, but you know you wont go beyond that speed, do you shift at 5000rpm and let the revs lower or stay at 5000 rpm without shifting?
              12. Generally ,do you quickly accelerate to your shift revs or slowly get there?
              13. What's the general weight that comes on the bike? Your weight + pillion maybe + bags etc.
              14. Where is your riding place? Moderate traffic, Heavy traffic, or open highway?
              15. What is your maintained riding speed?
              16. Heavy use of brakes? do you panic brake or brake at the last minute often? or come to a slow stop?
              17. Anything out of the box that you think help.

Kindly be as accurate as possible as this is going to help all of us.

from 2011/12 onwards yamaha began to export it to the advanced markets of japan, australia and NZ as an entry level sportbike.. it's also sold in several south and central american countries (columbia, mexico etc) but i dont know if the bikes there are also exported out of india or instead manufactured there itself...recently it was also released in vietnam and thailand as well..i think some other asian countries also get R15 in their markets (indonesia has had a similar bike called vixion out of which R15 was apparently born, but it was still quite different and not a nearly full-fledged sportbike as the R15v2).

true. that's why for several months now i always tell the air filling guys to fill the air to a pressure of 30 psi front and 35 psi rear (manual recommends 28 and 33 respectively)..

Thank you so much mate for the detailed reply. The reason I asked was, I have spare fairings for both the sides (The outermost, long one) that were changed only for the reason they had scratches. I planned to re-paint this part and put some official Yamaha graphics over it. So I surfed the internet for some pictures and came across this cool looking official Yamaha R15 2.0. The language posted there was not like Indonesian one and sounded something like Spanish. So I got curious over the number of counties where Yamaha R15 2.0 was officially released.

Now that the fairings can be refurbished, it can be replaced with the existing fairings once if they get scratched too. In this way the fairings can replaced many times in a cyclic manner until they brake and become completely useless. Knowing the countries were Yamaha r15 2.0 was released, will eventually allow me to search for more graphics variant options and I hope it will be good idea to look for Yamaha R6 graphics variant too.

                            1. What fuel do you use? Standard or high octane?
                            Standard (normal)
                            2. What comes first? Your service day or your kilometers?
Kms comes first after you finish your free service. during initial free services you have to follow 'days' rule.
                            3. Any fuel additives?
                            nope. not needed either.
                            4. What tyre air? Nitrogen or regular? Pressure recommended by manufacturer or something else?
normal air. pressure recommended by the manual. but dont let it fall more than 3psi. expample: front its 28psi. dont let it go below 25psi. this effects FE a bit and effects more as the pressure falls more.
                            5. When do you refuel? Once the tank is empty or halfway? Or do you always run on low fuel?
everytime i see "F" . no not always low on fuel. but very few times i have been very low on fuel.
                            6. Preferred refuel timing. Day, night or no preference?
early morning or late night. i fill anytime i want to.
                            7. Do you follow engine warm up rule? Or start and move?
yes. start the bike, better if the bike is straight and not on side stand. warm up atleast till 40secs. and make sure the rpm is set to 1.4k.
                            8. When did you do your first service? at 1000kms or end of 1st month?
1st service at 250kms on odo.
                            9. Did you follow manufacturer break-in pattern? Or Motoman? Or your own? If own, what was it?
                            followed the manual.
                            10. Did you always get the mileage your claimed? Or was is improved later? How many kilometers/months/services later?
i get about 38 in city and around 44 on highways rides. please note the riding styles are different in both situations. even though i ride around 100kmph on highways the gear shifting is different from city ride and also maintaining rpm is different.
                            11. At what RPM do you usually shift? If you shift at say 5000rpm, but you know you wont go beyond that speed, do you shift at 5000rpm and let the revs lower or stay at 5000 rpm without shifting?
city ride: i shift anywhere i want to. either at 4k in 1st gear or at 8k. but i usually ride around 6 to 7 k rpm with a faster throttle input.
in highways: i shift 1st to 2nd gear at 5k, after that rest of the gears i shift around 7k rpm and to 6th whenever i wish to. this is for better FE.

                            12. Generally ,do you quickly accelerate to your shift revs or slowly get there?
i do quickly. only sometimes i ride very sanely.
                            13. What's the general weight that comes on the bike? Your weight + pillion maybe + bags etc.
its only my weight(and a bag with weight of 1kg or max 6kg in touring). pretty much 95% of the times.
                            14. Where is your riding place? Moderate traffic, Heavy traffic, or open highway?
moderate in city most of the times, few times heavy traffic. on highway its very less traffic.
                            15. What is your maintained riding speed?
city i cant comment exact speed. i dont cross 60kmph in usual office ride. touch 80s and 90s very rarely in other city rides. in highways i will be above 90kmph till the top speed ( top speed very few times)
                            16. Heavy use of brakes? do you panic brake or brake at the last minute often? or come to a slow stop?
in my riding style i use more brakes. i use the engine brake the most in slowing down. panic brake often and also if the traffic is less i brake slow.
                            17. Anything out of the box that you think help.
experience and experiment. study your bike and its behavior. each persons riding is different. mine type of riding wont help you much.

Kindly be as accurate as possible as this is going to help all of us.

its very important to keep the bike maintained. also to ride sanely and shift gears correctly at correct rpm.

whenever you service the bike they paste a small sticker which will have the next service date or kms written. i dont see a point in giving it for service before the kms are covered. if you face an issue then give it before the kms or the date. i follows the kms covered. none have questioned me till now at service center.
