Guys, Has anyone tried using "Shell Advance Ultra 4T"??? Felt that the gearshifts were going harder and downshifts were giving loud thuds. My bike was currently running with Yamalube!!! Well, Then I went to a Yamaha-Genuine Spares dealer and got an Oil Filter element @Rs 164, Then right away went to a Shell petrol bunk and got a bottle of Shell Advance Ultra costing Rs 804!!! Took a ride along the Chennai-Puzhal Bypass and noted a great difference!!!

Pros-

1. Engine felt smoother already.
2. Gearshifts felt real smooth.
3. Smoothness even at higher rev's (Went at a constant 130kph for about 15 seconds just to check, The odo was at 9k and the bike's exhaust note was pretty awesome)
4. Less Engine heat, Usually the radiator used to kick in when ridden for about even 20 to 30 kms and when let to idle for a minute or so. But even after going at high revs and travelling a total of 80kms, the last 15 of it in traffic(not bumper to bumper, but at speeds of 20 to 30), the radiator didnt kick in!! Started to wonder whether there could be any problems... Reached home and parked my bike and waited by letting the engine to idle and The radiator fan did kick in in about 30 seconds !!! Phew!!

Cons-

1. The gearshifts felt a bit sticky, was a bit weird for about 15kms and then it seems to have gotten better! (Don't know if its okay this way, thats why i listed it out here)
2. THE PRICE!!!! !!! (Considering other Oils not of same range like Motul etc but the Cheaper ones)

Aaaaand, What do you think guys? Anybody given a try? Any Suggestions???

IBelieve shell 4T is 10W40, you are feeling smoother response due that thinner oil config. I think hard shifts are due to same, while the engine temp rises thinner oil film will cause less lubrication and making your metals life harder. Then about price, brand name and grade is the cause

Yes, Shell Advance Ultra is a 10w40! And the R15's manual at Section 9-1 States Engine oil type as "20w40 or 20w50"! Well, lesser the "Cold" grade (The one before the "w"), quicker the circulation of oil when the engine is cold thus reducing wear by a liiiiitle bit ! Won't make much of a difference though! Guess Shell Ultra would work just good!

Well you actually should not move with the change of grade, if you ride hard and long, this oil grade is not for your bike.......i will recommend you to change oil before Summer

Not true. These are multi grade oils which work over a wider temperature band than single grade oils. The oil recommended by Yamaha for R15 is 20W40 which typically is recommended for temperatures ranging from 0 degree C to 40 degree C. The oil that he is using is 10W40 which is recommended for temperatures ranging from -10 degree C to 40 degree C. Therefore, while the upper ceiling of the operating temperature is same as recommended by Yamaha i.e. 40 it's only the lower end that is of lower value i.e. 10W instead of 20W. In short, the engine is not going to explode just because a lower cold grade value has been selected.

The oil is just fine,

@abhimanyu31,

You have said in an earlier post that irrespective of the type of oil that you use, you change it at 2k km.
I have a question that's probably been done to death but i have got no clear answers yet. For a street rider who uses his R15 exclusively for spirited rides (no commuting) with the rpm never going below 5k and typically in the 7-9k range with occasional bursts up to red-line, will switching to a full-syth oil like Motul 300v offer any real benefit? Perhaps better performance when the engine is running hot and increase engine life? (All this assuming that the oil is changed at the usual 3k interval)

Yes, it does make a difference. Fully synthetic oil like Motul 300V contain ester which provide superior anti friction and heat protection. These oils have a higher shear strength than semi synthetic and mineral based oils.

am the same kind of rider as incipient (good thing you asked the question again explicitly).. no commuting purposes (very rarely), R15 was bought only for spirited riding and i typically ride mostly in 5000-9500 RPMs (but my RPM does go below 5000 every now and then when in heavy traffic area :-P) and i seem to be refilling oil (still yamalube, but intend to change to motul or shell fully synthetic in the next few months) at less than 2000kms.

Hi Guys,

Got my Yamaha R15 two months back, clocked around 1600 kms, i am getting a strange tick tick noise (probably tappet noise) when i deaccelerate, this noise is there between 3k to 4k rpm, is there any specific reason of this noise, i went to svc first they told me that it was an clutch bell noise, later service advisor tells me that its noise of tappet. I asked him to rectify this issue, where he answered me that this was normal and if we try to remove this noise there are possiblities that the engine head might have holes in it.. after hearing this i was like...
I had never heard of such scenario ever. so has anyone ever faced this tappet issue ever on their new R15? and how do you rectify it.
Also i want to know which is the best service center in Mumbai to get my Yamaha serviced and rectify this issue.

Thanks for you help in advance.

I have had the same problem. Done 2600km on odo. I had got the tappet adjustment done at 1600km in second service.
It had reduced a bit, but after some spirited riding the tick tick sound returned back. Don't worry about it, its normal. Get it adjusted every service, you have to live with it.

if you are very certain its tappet sound, check it yourself. As from your bikes symptoms, I think tappet needs attention. Check my profile. You can find infos regarding how to adjust tappet!

it depends on your tyres TWI, look it change tyre when it disappears. Mostly tyre will last from 20k km to 25k km.
