it seems i am getting a really really low mileage these days. as low as about 28 kmpl or 31 kmpl the last two times if i am to trust the reserve. i don't know what's the matter, either the "reserve" F has become totally random and comes on sometimes way too earlier (which is not likely, as it's electronically measured), as early as when the fuel in the tank is over 4 or 4.5 litres, or the tank is not really of 12 litres volume which is again obviously not likely. so something is really screwed up inside my bike. a mileage of 30 plus/minus 1 or 2 is really low for a bike that used to give 37/38 usually (at times earlier too it gave about 33 or 35 or so), such a low number can't be coming out if everything inside is normal.

had a pretty great morning ride today with some satisfying and fairly kickass cornerings. long time after i went for a morning ride and thus after a long time i had the opportunity to attempt harder/faster cornerings thanks to the emptiness of the roads in the dawn time. absolutely love it when the bike moves a bit under me while cornering. it's amazing feeling to have the bike wobble or rear-slide a bit when leaned over and yet how the lines are so solid and stable and everything feels naturally under rider control.

but then unexpectedly early reserve mark has dampened the mood a little and has me worried.
The reserve thing, I'm not sure what it is as I too am facing the same, perhaps got adjusted to it [emoji23]
W.r.t. mileage issues, I too was facing the same issue(bad mileage) and ArnabC said it was due to incorrect tappet adjustment after which I got it corrected. Haven't checked the FE after the correction, done 75+kms after filling the tank full, drop in a point in fuel gauge.
Maybe you too are facing the same problem, loosened tappets.
I also got my injector cleaned and in addition mixed fuel injector cleaner to the fuel as one of my friend says it has to cleaned once in 10k kms.

You could be running too rich or your plugs need to be replaced, harsh use of the throttle and brakes, wrong grade oil or your oil needs to be changed (check/replace oil filter), maybe your air filter has accumulated too much dust and hence your air intake may have been compromised.

If your bikes more than 2 years old and you tend to ride hard and on bad roads get the wheel bearings checked/replaced, unnecessary wear and tear leads to lost energy in the form of heat and sound.

Similarly the sprockets.

And if you get everything checked and still haven't found the problem check for any leaks in the tank and pump though I doubt it's gonna be a leak.

Hope this was helpful.

Loads of things give you better FE and bad FE.

1. your throttle control and brakes usage (thats why it drops in city and increases in highway)
2. how clean is the air filter
3. how new or old is the engine oil
4. are your brakes adjusted properly
4. chain is clean and lubed? this effects equally on the performance.
5. tappets adjustment
6. fuel quality
7. periodic maintenance
8. idle rpm adjustment . dont keep it more than 1.4k rpm.
9. Tyre air pressure.
10. its very important to follow the parts replacement according to their life. better do it before they die. if you continue using them after that then you are also damaging other parts. example: spark plugs, air filter, oil filter, chain and sprockets, tyres, clutch plates etc etc.

others please add up to this list.

Hiii, everyone...!!

About my bike ruffness at higher RPM, i noticed lot of changes when i used nitrogen air compression.
I think the main culrpit was this INCORRECT TYRE PRESSURE due to which the engine was over-heating

Wanted to let you know. I used nitrogen refill for tire this time.

Noticeable difference

1) The Handling has improved.
2) Engine response is good
3) Better grip during turns

Benefits of Nitrogen refill are:

1) There less oxidation inside the tire resulting in better tire life as no oxygen is present so no corrosion.
2) Tire pressure is sustained for longer period as long as more than 2 months
3) Less fluctuation of air pressure at higher speed

1. How much did you pay for the Nitrogen refill?
2. Did they vacuum the tyre before refill?

not speed, proportional to temperature variance.

Why don't they use normal air in race car tires?

Many race car teams use nitrogen instead of air in their tires because nitrogen has a much more consistent rate of expansion and contraction compared to the usual air. Often, a half pound of pressure will radically affect traction and handling. With track and tire temperatures varying over the duration of a race, the consistency of nitrogen is needed.

Nitrogen pressure is more consistent than normal air pressure, because air typically contains varying amounts of moisture due to changes in the relative humidity on race day. Water causes air to be inconsistent in its rate of expansion and contraction. So, a humid race in the southeast United States or a dry race in the desert western United States could make for unpredictable tire pressures if "dry" nitrogen were not used.

Nitrogen is also used in the high-pressure tires on large and small aircraft.

They deflated the tire fully by removing the tire valve , reconnected and refilled to appropriate pressure.
Cost was 50 bucks.

the oil was changed to motul 300v 15w50 only about 5 weeks ago (900 kms ago) and had of course changed the oil filter along with it as well.
air filter was cleaned during the last service which was merely 17-18 days ago (350 kms ago).

nonetheless will go to svc and get the plugs checked and air filter cleaned again.
i do rip the bike hard, with hard accelerations often and often taking the revs all the way to 9500 (at times nearly red lining too but that's rare), but many other riders in this thread have written similar riding habits and yet getting a good mileage. i myself have been ripping it hard most of the times ever since the post-first-service and still got a mileage of at least 35+ (usually 37/38 on an average).

the bike is just about 11 months old..have ridden on really bad roads several times, but that's not often...otherwise, the normal amount of bad road patches that i regularly encounter is the same as what anyone else does riding on indian roads :-)
but yes, the few times i have ridden on truly bad roads (it has been many months since i went to some place with such bad roads), i did at times ride a bit hard on it sometimes..

will check the bearings and sprockets as well..the bike is hardcore so i admit i have indeed pushed it very very hard at times, and usually ride it pretty hard anyways.

thanks for the suggestions.

i will be away for 12 days starting tonight so the bike will be sitting idle all these days but first order of business after returning would be to go to svc and check all these things.

i do rip it hard, but such usage didnt lead to this low mileage in the past as this last couple of times..tyre pressure, chain lubrication are alright and something that i maintain regularly (lube the chain every 500 kms or so, and the latest it was done was just 350 kms ago)..air filter was also cleaned merely 350 kms ago at the last service 17-18 days ago..engine oil was changed (to motul 300v 15w50) just 900 kms and 5 weeks ago..brakes are as it ever was.

regarding fuel quality, now that's something i can't really say anything for sure..have been using the same petrol pump which is always busy and seems to be a good one, but there's no knowing for sure what kind of petrol quality they provide..that's always one of the first things that comes to my mind regarding low FE..wish there was some sure shot way of knowing about it.

yashas also mentioned about the tappet adjustment. there's no tappet noise in my bike, but nonetheless have to get it checked out it seems.

regarding parts replacement, presently the bike is merely 11 months and 6700 kms old.. i am surely of the mind to replace them at recommended times, but now at 6700 kms old nothing is supposed to be replaced. :-)

thanks for suggestions.

"Running rich".... Means the ratio of fuel to that of air in the fuel-air mixture is higher than optimal which leads to unburnt and also wasted fuel. Usually happens when either the atmospheric pressure is very low or your ECU is malfunctioning and delivering too much fuel to the motor. This is rarely a problem in Yamahas.
Plus if you're using Motul 300V 15w50 it's not the recommended grade of oil. The recommended grade is 20W50 or 20W40, still... I don't think that'll screw up your mileage THAT much.

And about riding hard.... Unless you didn't follow the recommended instructions for breaking-in the bike during the first 1000kms you needn't worry about hard riding reducing your mileage.
I've got loads of performance mods on mine and it's barely 8 months old and I'm still getting a mileage of 40+ in spite of putting my bike through constant abuse.

well, lots of R15 riders in this thread and elsewhere use the motul 300v 15w50 with no decreased FE apparently, so perhaps that's not the issue. on the other hand, it could be as well in some weird way :-)

i had an ideal breaking in period. also, since FE seems to have gone down only recently and not earlier (which would have been the case if somehow merely riding hard was the main reason for low FE), some factor must have played its part only recently..god knows.

i would perhaps never know how you and some others get 40+ mileage despite hard riding and despite city conditions :-(

Common 'problem' faced by all R15s happens because of something rubbing against that part and wearing off the paint. If you carry a pillion it's mostly cause their backpack or clothing rubs against it.
Think it costs around 300 bucks to replace that bit of plastic.

Fuelling is controlled by the bikes ECU and there's no way to adjust it yourself. And the only way to check it (the ECU) is by running a diagnosis of the ECU which only Yamaha service mechanics cam carry out.

Your best bet is talk to the service mech about your FE problem.

And no, adjusting the idle rmp isn't gonna do you any good in this case. But do make sure it's at around 1.2k - 1.3k rpm.
