  • R15 caught fire. Short circuit?

    Hi
4 days back my bike fell from a standstill position. A lot of white smoke came out and there were some flames under the front seat which I doused by fire. Later when I removed the battery there were some burnt wires and an edge of the battery was completely melted . I have an alarm system installed (Xenos) . Did the alarm cause this ? Or it was something else? Any suggestions? The bike was not involved in any impact prior to this and it only fell from a standstill position. Click image for larger version

I have seen my friends cbr150r with same xenos system messing his electrical wiring. Havent come across such incidents under normal usage of any bike.

I think it's a classic case of short circuit. When the bike tipped over, there must be some electrical overload which must have shorted the security system wire. I can see the battery shell melted at a right angle to where the wire passes over it. Lucky it did't explode.

        Cheers!

Awesome ride dude! Couple of questions, this must have been a 7000 odd km roundtrip, given the R's short service interval, where did you get it serviced during the trip?

Were you on stock tires? How did they perform in the slush?

            Yeah buddy, awesome ride indeed.

This was about 5650kms round trip. I had completely serviced the bike before leaving for the ride. The list is mentioned a few pages back. I carried Motul 7100 10w40 oil, Motul chain lube x 4 cans, Motul chain clean x 4 cans, clutch cable and accelerator cable. This bike doesnt need much maintenance if you have kept it in right condition. So 6000kms wasnt an issue, as we cleaned and lubed the chain at every 1000kms. Rest everything was perfectly alright.

Stock tyres performed really well. Be it wet, dry, slush or gravel. They did there job perfectly. Only on ice it was a different story, but it was similar for all other bikes (cbr, impulse, duke 200, RE).

Hi all....i am a proud owner of the r15 v2 for more than a month now... My run in was good and i have not taken the bike beyond 5k (1st service) and 6.5k till now with rare bursts beyond 85kh/hr.. the engine is super smooth and i am getting above 47km/l. I have two queries now..
              1. My dual horn is not consistent. I mean that i can hear 2 different tones when i honk and its quite annoying sonetimes.
              2. When the bike is at its optimum operating temperature. When i start the bike i can hear a noise like that of timing chain but it fades away.

Please share some light on the horn and noise issue..

              • Replacing chain

guys it seems only way to remove the chain, is to cut it.
because even when the swing arm is removed, the chain still goes through the hole in the swing arm(see picture).
I was gonna replace the chain myself, now i gotta rely on the unreliable svc people.

Does anybody know the actual cost of the chain sprocket set? one svc said its 1900 and another one said its 3100(said its yamaha chain and not rolon). Since yamaha doesnt make chains, im guessing its the DID made chain thats costing 3100 and 1900 one is rolon. Does any of these chain come with a master link/lock?

                Thank you.

edit: btw my chain lasted 47k kms. replaced the front sprocket 2 times though. still more adjustment is left but chain is making a lot of noise now, so gonna change it.

Rolon X-Ring comes with Master link.

It was around 1.8k last time we bought it (Rolon), maybe a year or 2 back.

R15s is fixed link chain as opposed to removable master link type. So, you'd have to have a chain puller tool to remove the rivets. Pain the arse? Totally.

R15's sprocket costs close to 2500 odd rupees

You can get it online at:

                    Check this link

Here you have the parts changed by the respective rider and the price of the sprocket with photos and everything.

                      Hi christo,
I 've been just done with 20th service of my r15 v2 today. My bike has done 42.5k kms. In this service i changed chain sprocket kit along with battery and general service. Totally the cost came 4900 rs.
                      Breakup:
                      Chain: 1266 rs
                      Sprocket drive: 100 rs
                      Sprocket driven: 405 rs
                      Battery: 1250rs

By the way my last chain sprocket set from Yamaha costed 3500 rs and it lasted for almost 30k kms without any sprocket change.

Hey guys, my R15 has completed 18k on the odo and I am taking her in for the next service. I noticed while cleaning the bike that the chain is very loose and the adjustment is nearly to the end so, should I change the chain and sprocket or can I remove a link from the chain(if I can) and keep on riding.

                          1. Take the bike to svc, and get the horn relay checked, since your bike is new and under warranty, they'll replace it for no cost.
                          2. Cold engine at startup makes those sounds, it must be the valves and not the timing chain. since it fades away when the engine reaches optimum temp, you got nothing to worry about.

removing links isn't safe, since the chain is stretched to its maximum, you should replace it. 18k is low mileage for the chain, either you take pillion regularly or isn't taking care of the chain. keeping the chain wet(lubed) ALWAYS is the secret for its long life. Buying expensive lubes for a chain that costs 2k isn't ideal either, use gear oil or used engine oil* for lubing the chain.

*Many advice against the used engine oil, saying somehow it's not good for the chain but i disagree, i rarely use expensive lubes(rainy season, long rides) and chains on my bikes have always lasted more than 40k kms. Actually engine oil is a good chain lube since it 1)Does not damage rubber 2)provides lubrication 3)tolerate high temperatures.
Use the oil that's been drained to a bottle, which has been sitting idle for sometime, all the metal particles(if there's any) will be sunk to the bottom and the oil, perfectly safe to use.

The only things that increased the cost was the brake pads. Rest is the usual stuff.
The brake pad cost is also correct.

Was this the first time the brake pads were replaced?? If they were replaced earlier, on how many kms?
Usual life of Brake pad is around 8-9k kms if you ride normally and have good riding habits. The life of the brake pads reduce significantly if you are used to aggressive riding and braking. If the brake pads were worn out and they had to be replaced, then the cost is fine, everything matches. Hope this helps.
