  • R15 continuously stopping after few kilometres of riding

Hi.. This is my first post on xbhp.com. I have a 2012 Yamaha R15 v2. I have not faced any major issues till now. Since some days the bike is running normally at beginning of cold start and after some time the bike starts behaving like there is no fuel in the tank (the feel similar to when the bike finishes it's fuel and runs to reserve). Then the bike stops when everytime the rpm is low and sometimes also stops when the rpm is high hence it has become impossible to ride the bike normally. I took it to a mechanic and he cleaned the tank and the FI system. Even then the problem persists.
Has anyone else faced this kind of issue till now and have an idea which problem it might be. The bike has run approximately 7000 km till now ( not a frequent user) and is fully stock.

When they pumped all the water out I got my bike repaired at the Service Centre, since then the idle RPM could not be set to more than 1.1k, the engine kept stalling, loss of power could be noticed. I've got the Throttle Body and Fuel Injector replaced as the mechanic suggested, still the engine wasn't producing enough power so the mechanic asked to change the Fuel Pump so I had it done, still the bike doesn't have enough power, the bike produces blue smoke when I give high throttle input while standstill, I thought that the valves adjustment/ECU would be the problem but my mechanic says that the valves are fine and as for the ECU he said that if any damage is there (water damage) it would get fried up and the bike won't work, but my concern is that I t might be the ECU failing, maybe it's out tuned due to water damage.
Check your HT coil. Blue smoke means the rings are weak so oil is getting burnt but that doesnt mean your bike wont pull to high rpms. Also try swapping the ecu with another r15 i.e. pre 2014 versions only as the later ones had different ecu

Hi Friend this might be due to the Fuel pump issue, please ask your mechanic to check the working of fuel pump

May be I have not noticed all these time. I am facing humming sound slightly louder at 3, 4 th gears between 5000-6000 rpm. Its especially irritating when you drive in closed areas. Anyone facing this humming noise

Mine is running at 4000km without adjustments and service guys say it is still not required to adjust ..

Don't know man iam on my 2nd chain set each one lasted around 50+k kms. I adjust around 3000-4000 kms same as you. The D.I.D chains are an awesome brand and if you lube them properly they will last till apocalypse. Just the front sprocket wears out faster than the chain and rear sprockets but that can also be minimised by flipping the sprocket sides every 10k kms.

Make it two. From day 1. Its mainly because of the resonating chamber in the air induction system. Its normal once you ride a couple thousand kms it will be a part of the riding experience. Its variable for some it comes in a lower Rpm for some in a higher Rpm. I get it around 5000-6000 rpm not at all an issue.

                Thanks mate,

I was in a shock actually as my previous bike Pulsar 220 was not withstanding more than 500-700km of chain adjustment. So on Pulsar it was my routine work with chain lube.
And you have used the same chain and sprocket for 50k kms that's a good news for me and owners of R15, if it last even close to that for me I'll be more than happy
Please give more details on flipping the front sprocket .

Take out the sprocket then reverse its sides as in the side facing you should be towards the engine and the side which was facing towards the engine should face you. Do same with the rear if you have patience and time.
Keep the chain lubed at all times and prevent kinks / frozen links they are the main culprits why the chain go bad. Also the 500-700 km lubing rule i dont know man it seems garbage in actual conditions in INDIA. I lube it whenever i feel like it which is every 5-6 days. I use 90 grade gear oil specially made for auto rickshaw gear box (Sae90 Ep 90 are useless too ). The rims and number plate are all covered with oil because of the extra oil flinging off but as usual its a compromise(i dont care if my bike looks horrible from the outside functionality should remain unchanged).
Even if you use the Chain sprays available and make the chain last 30k kms that's good.

I had same issue, check your fuse and battery terminals. In my case it was due to half burnt fuse..

when you guys say "adjust", you mean adjusting the chain slack right ? if so, how come your chain slack remains good for 3000-4000 kms ? :O

i had to replace my chain at 15k kms, it had lost all its slack and there was no space to adjust anymore apparently which wasnt surprising to me because towards the last 3-4000 kms of its life it was losing all its slack every 300-400 kms like a nuisance...the sprockets were still good and had plenty more life in them, but i changed them too seeing as how thats the advice several experienced riders in this thread have given to others whenever someone asked about it (and also same thing said by people elsewhere in the internet including reputed websites about bikes)....then later on someone posted how taking out one or two chain links out of the chain would make them regain some slack adjustment space (which sounds obvious, but ignorant me didnt even know you could take links out just like that lol). and now i am reading even old sprockets can be made to serve the bike longer by simply reversing their face :\

good to know of these clever jugaad tips now for future, but i wish i knew them before i shelled out 3200 for the new chain and sprocket sets back then

                      • Re: Yamaha YZF-R15 version 2.0

Firstly R15 chains come in a closed loop type. Its no normal lock type chain where you can take out the chain lock cut a couple links and put a lock back so that the achain gets shortened and you get your firmness back. Its possible in other chains but not in R15 chains. You can still forcibly break the chain and put a lock to it but that's a catastrophe waiting to happen as the pitch and other measurement wont match and the jugaad lock may give way any time. So the concept of taking links off the R15 chain is not true. for other bikes it works. Lol i have taken 3 links out of my yezdi recently.
Secondly the reversing of sprocket sides work because it prevents uneven wear in the sprocket teeth hence it lasts longer.
And ya i adjust chain some 3000-4000 kms once. I dont ride it like a Road racer, its basically used as a commmuter / tourer with no harsh acceleration and is washed (i.e. chain) every 15 days religiously with diesel.

You are absolutely spot on. I had no problems in using gear oil HP gear oil. Using chain spray makes the chain bind and vibrations on the foot peg . I have ordered front sprocket from indiaspares. Do i need to reverse the rear sprocket also?. The hum didnt occur when I let off the throttle only.

You can if you have time although its a hassle. Logically speaking its better if both sprockets are reversed.
regarding the hum its from the resonator box which will vibrate in a specific frequency at certain rpms hence the sound. Dont worry its fine.

Bingo lugging is what should not be done ever in a motorcycle. It gives rise to a host of problems later on and the jerks created by the chain when you lug attacks the sprocket and begins to chip it at a minute level which results in both the chain being stretched unevenly(loose in one place tight in other) and sprocket teeth to erode unevenly.

Why use it when a normal plug does the job perfectly. I never used NGK iridium even when i was running powertronic ecu and Knn. The engine is so well tight and the ignition coil is so awesome that the stock plug hardly goes bad. Just change it regularly at 10k kms. costs like 85 bucks.
