            Hi

This is an interesting point, I am a proud owner of a R15 S bought Dec last year. I have been sticking to the Yamalube 20W40 for the paid servicing so far since the dealership no longer offers the SS 15W40.

The dealer always pushes the FS oil but I refuse for the following reasons 1) Want to stick to mineral initially (have clocked 9000 kms already and 2) the R15 has a short 70 day/3000km service interval, replacing a FS oil every 2 months seems to be an overkill for me and an unnecessary expense

Would you recommend I switch to FS now that am close to 10k on the odo and would it provide a substantial benefit which justifies the additional cost every 2nd month?

I was planning to stick to what the dealer pours during the warranty and stick to the servicing schedule and then switch to FS after warranty is over and extend the drain interval from 70 days to every 4 months/5000kms

The manual just recommends 20W40 as the oil spec and does not specify if it should be FS

            Thoughts?

Got a strange issue in the back-light of my instrument cluster(white back light in the speedometer).

-when i turn on the parking lights(auxiliary lights), the back-light of the instrument cluster glows.
-when i turn on the headlights (low o high beam), the back-light of the instrument cluster turns off but the headlight still glows.

If i turn off everything and turn back the headlights on, the back-light works normal.

This issue is very rare once in 2 o 3 days.

Anyone else experienced this issue? Is this any fault in the bike's electrical ?

Spray wd40 in your light switch. Happens to me during rains. Rectifes itself when i spray wd40 all over the switch.

Yes, you may shift to Synthetic oils now.

The manuals for most bikes never recommend FS or Mineral, for the reason that basically both oils are similar, just that the refinement and cleansing is done more extensively to arrive at Synthetic oil. So, these are just levels of refinement done on the base oils. Otherwise, both FS and M are derivatives of crude oil anyhow.
Both provide similar physical lubrication to the engine, if they're the same grade. What happens to the engine due to the lubrication, that depends on whether its FS or Mineral.

For years, the world has been using Mineral oils only, even for racing/ competition purposes, and in road bikes like YZF-R1 and all. But technology improves with time....
The generally accepted statement is that synthetic is better, but then again, while running in a new engine, things are different.

However, the grade is important because that is what determines lubrication in your engine.
For example, would you like a oil so dense and sticky, that even on starting the vehicle, the oil sticks to the bottom of the crankcase and doesn't circulate?
Similarly, would you like an engine oil that doesn't stick to the hot engine and circulates around like water, giving uneven lubrication?
                  Obviously not.

So, a generally accepted practice is that you can go lower then the lower value (recommended) and higher than the higher value (again, recommended).
So, if your manual suggests 20W40, you can go for 15W40 as well as 20W50, as well as 10W50. But not 10W30.
Although, I would suggest you avoid unknown oils unless there's no choice.

The lower value suggests viscousity (stickyness) at normal-cold temperature. The higher value (after the W) suggests oil's viscousity at higher temperatures like 100*C.
Depending on how an engine is constructed, and at what temperatures it is used and for how long, the company suggests a particular grade.

Yup, usually happens every monsoons. The contact points of the electrical switchs rust due to moisture and that causes this issue.
nothing to worry, spray the switches with WD40 or any other anti rust spray, click the switch a few times to make sure that the rust is all gone and it will be as good as new.

I am observing marked increase in mileage after switching to Rimula R4. City mileage is consistent 52+ and recent highway trip of 200+ km too and fro gave me 56 kmpl till now, yet reserve indicator is not flashing. I will observe some more time whether its a genuine improvement or false claim. It happened to me once tank was almost empty but the reserve indicator didnt blink.

I bought locally. Btw I used this oil as engine flush. My bike crossed 10k kms and Diesel engine oil has high detergent for cleaning carbon residue. Once I complete 1200-1500 km, I will replace with motul 7100

Can anyone suggest a smartphone/nav device holder which works on the R15 V2/S. Any 12V charging device also which can be installed without cutting wires?

Hello.. How do you get such a high mileage? What are your practices that make your bike return such mileage?

Its quite simple. I dont make any extra effort for gaining FE.
                                1. Proper air pressure. I keep 30 psi for front and 35 psi rear
                                2. Lube chain frequently. I use gear oil
                                3. clean airfilter every 3000 kms by bowing air from opposite side
                                4. I never revved the engine. 7K rpm is more than enough in city as well as highway. Gear shifting is around 4-6k rpm depends on traffic and mood. I do revv once in a while but not frequently.
                                5. No sudden acceleration and braking. This will reduce the drive train stress and the internal components
                                6. Highways if I ride 90+ I get 48kmpl but last time max I toughed was 85kmph and mostly at 80. Mileage is 56kmpl. 80kph is more than sufficient for our roads.
                                7. I always warm the engine in the morning till rpm needle settles. Dont know whether this will help
