  • Guys I just got my R15 2.0 today, booked, paid for and delivered in a single day I'll upload some pictures tomorrow.

My daily commute is just 10kms, but all the run in talk is about several kms, is there any way to avoid negative(if any) effects of running in using shorts runs of 5kms to and fro only twice. Keeping it around 3-3.5k rpm, is that too safe?

    • My quieston for all R15 v2.0 owners, are accesories like rear seat cowl, aluminium levers, and all others available for R15 v2.0 just like R15 V1? And also Daytona racing kit?

Thank you very much, I'll keep that in mind. I'll have to get proper gear for riding now. Thanks again.

        • Ride On!

"Boss! at the end of the day it's the bhp that counts, that too full 21 of it."
"That's all fine there dude, but u see, engine capacity defines your machine, all 223 of it."

We all have heard some or the other versions of the above comments.
But, this post is about the rider, his hunger for adventure and love for riding through miles without a thought on his mind.
First post on xbhp(rather anywhere at all).

          The choice was made
My choice, the Yamaha R15 V2.0. Was my choice blinded by passion? Well, almost.
Although I did take a test ride on the Karizma R and Pulsar 220, I couldn't get my mind off this baby sport bike. One other bike that did catch my fancy was the CBR 250, but thanks to the ownerships reviews slamming its build quality and difficulty in getting spare parts, it was soon out of the equation.
Karizma was a proven favourite but it was too old. Pulsar, well, too many people own it and crib about low build quality. There goes the elimination round.

A bike in hand is better than two in the bush
I booked my R15 even when the test ride was not available. The version 1 had a great reputation, and V2 had drop dead looks and stunning finish quality.
When i finally got it, the run in period limitations made me restless. Became a good boy and followed all of them. Never rode beyond 5000 rpm for first 500kms and never beyond 7500 rpm for the next 500kms. It was a capable babe and all it asked was a little respect, and that I gave it.

          Observations during run in
          1. Gear shift is hard if not done perfectly(Drop the throttle fast followed by quick pull on the clutch and swift upshift. Release the clutch slowly and apply throttle).
          2. Not so much of a delight at low rpm(below 5000 rpm). City riding wasn't great. A pain in heavy traffic.
          3. Mileage was around 45 kmpl.
          4. Find the petrol pump where the fuel suits your bike and stick to it. Fuel quality makes huge difference to the performance of the bike.
          5. Not very eager at low rpm. Overtaking sucks at such conditions.
          6. Back problem, what back problem? I am 6' 2" and 82 kgs. i feel perfectly at home on the bike .

One thing to remember though, over extended periods of slow riding (heavy traffic) and frequent braking, you tend to develop a little pain in the wrists and back.
Good news is, little adjustments(keep elbow slightly bent, grip on the handle should not be tight, leave handle, one hand at a time , and do wrist movements when possible, straighten back for a few seconds when needed) and you are good to go.

          1000 kms, first servicing
Engine oil changed, air filter cleaned, chain cleaned and lubricated. With the break in the courting was over, 1st servicing was the marriage. Now, it was time for honeymoon.

First things first, forget about restrictions, let the rpm meter roll. Got to 8000 rpm and speeds of 110 kmph came in easy.
Thoroughly enjoyed the rides. But, something was still missing.

          Observations post first service
          1. Gear shift slightly softer.
          2. Still not too great below 5000 rpm. City riding slightly better.
          3. Mileage 42 kmpl.
          4. Need to get beyond 6000 rpm for it to respond.
          5. Back or wrist pains become minimal once you get that perfect riding position to suit your body.

          Revelation
Although the bike was great, I still felt it wasn't as impressive as I had read about it. What was wrong, or rather, what was I doing wrong?
I decided one fine Saturday morning to push it to its limits and see what the bike can do.

Got on the Pune Bangalore highway at Wakad(Pune). With no plans in mind, just took off with only one thought in mind, I am going to push the bike and see how it behaves.

For the first time I rode it beyond 100 kmph for extended periods. Engine responded well, as if happy that i was treating it like it should be. Like a race bred stallion raring to go. It was complete bliss. When you become one with your ride and push it to its limit all the while trusting it to not disappoint you(not get you killed), you really appease the rider in you. I reached a max of 115 kmph. Covered around 80 kms in 1 hour 15 mins that included a mountain climb right at the end(A place called Khandala.Yup u heard it right. Don't be surprised, there's one south of Pune too). Came down, had a sandwich, refueled and rested for 5 mins. But, with the adrenaline rushing, who has time for rest.

Return journey was my best ride ever. With new found confidence in the capabilities of the bike, I was just raring to go.
The engine felt peppier than ever, and there was nothing that could wipe the grin off my face. Blasting my way back I clocked my best speed at 125 kmph.
The bike showed me an all new side of its personality beyond 9000 rpm. It was monstrous. First time I felt a vibration, but of the good kind. Handling was immaculate, be it 30 kmph at the mountain twisties or 100 kmph at the highway turns. Keeping most of the way at 100+ on the speedo, I was having a blast. Return journey made in 55 mins.
Such control, such great engine feel, such assuring feedback. No wonder these bikes demand a premium. They are a different breed.

          A new world
          1. Good god!!! The bike went into the ride a boy, and came back a man. Its personality had changed leaps and bounds.
Agressive and assuring from the word go. Now, a perfect babe at any rpm.
          2. Overtaking now a cake walk. Doesn't need to be at high rpm to respond.
          3. Lot more ridable in traffic after the power boost at low rpm.
          4. Gear shift almost perfect.
          5. Mileage 40 kmpl. Drops to 36 kmpl if raced beyond 100 kmph mark for extended periods.

5 litres petrol INR 355. Rediscovering love 1000 kms after marriage(1st servicing), priceless .

Get OKS (Code 451) Chain lube. Is cheaper and more effective than Motul Chain lube. I have used Motul's for around 12k Kms and than switched to OKS lube and have been using it for last 5K kms. OKS chain lube is of industrial grade and holds onto O Ring chain for ~ 400 kms. Only problem with OKS products is to source them.

                • I argued with him a lot but they were telling that chain lube cost is rs 160 and rs 45 is labor cost and 10.5 % service tax on it

Motul ofcourse, OKS and TVS TRU are also there, but in long run, Motul is far better.
You can get Motul and OKS at ProBiker in Pune, for TVS TRU ask at their service centers.

                            - Press the front brake lever, just slightly using two fingers. The point is we need to get the pads fully attached to the disc. You would slowly get the feel when is the time. It is a one second process. Along start rolling the throttle back with your thumb.
AND START SHIFTING YOUR WEIGHT BACKWARDS, this is a reason why rear skids at times, we normally put all the pressure on front but that is not the right way, weight should be distributed. else rear starts misbehaving.
                            - Then as per your confidence start pulling the lever as much you can in one go. It would be scary in start, But you would love it later.
                            - If you are in high gears, as per your speed also start shifting down. But remember that also requires practice, many guys follow the two shift down process to slow down. But at high speeds i feel it gets the bike skidding.
Thanks for the detailed info bro.. Shifting weight backward makes sense, although i doubt how feasible it would be to do so in panic situations
