I've been a long time follower of this thread and it has really pushed towards getting the Duke

So finally, after months of deliberation, I have decided to take the plunge and get the bike. Really excited right now!

I called up KTM Pune, and they told me that bike is readily available and that I can get it anytime I want. I've finalized my finances and will be going over there today to get it. Now I have a couple of questions regarding this, which I hope the members can clarify.

    1. How do I select the bike? Is there a something to look for specifically while selecting the bike? I have already gone through the PDI list and found it a bit general. If anyone has any suggestions towards the Duke I'd really appreciate it.

    2. The dealer said it'll take 2-3 days for the bike to get registered. Should I leave the bike at the showroom during this time or take it with me under temporary registration? I am not really inclined towards leaving the bike at the showroom. Also would like to know about the rules regarding temporary registration here as I am new in the state.

Thank you all for helping me decide and I will be posting my experiences here as the days go on!

    Regards
Apart from usual checks for scratches, etc, I'd check the gear shifting, how smooth (or not) it is. When I selected my bike, gear shifting on some bikes was smoother than others and I picked the one with smooth gear shifting. And it stayed smooth...

Don't know about temp registration procedure, for me it wasn't a problem to select the bike and pick it up 2 days later.

    Good luck and happy Katooming!

Don't worry showroom won't hand over you the bike without registration.
Actually temp number comes into picture if you are buying your vehicle from some far area and want to register it in your residing area/state/rto. Temp numbers are valid for 30 days only, can be renewed if needed. Some people do it for better series numbers also.

And why are you thinking so much ?? Before you were buying this bike, it was in their custody only. So CHILL!!

Just make the payment and ask the dealer to register it quick within 1-2 days.
Actually registration don't take much time. If you go by morning then by evening you get the number. I had got the same(my bikes and car are registered within 1 day). But now lazy heads act slow.
And even dealers are wise, they don't send single bikes, but try to send a lot of bikes so their agents get their work done easily rather than multiple visit.
      CHILL and enjoy the ride!!

      • Sarcastic, Katoom, here's another newbie in the Duke club. I think its a sorta natural tendency to be slightly paranoid about what one's (heavily) investing on (and I say this from personal experience). But like what many guys have testified here, relax, put your trust in the bike & company and take the plunge (if you've really decided on this bike, that is). However, I do understand that the component of risk is quite high in Sarcastic's case, but sometimes you just have to take the, cliched, 'leap of faith' if that's really your calling! Good luck!

My tale so far: completed 1000km; mostly city riding; did a short trip to Puttaparthi last weekend (170km one way; excellent roads; lovely ride). Bike's been, thankfully, very good so far. Haven't really redlined it any time; somehow managed to suppress all instincts to rough her up. And now is the slightly touchy part - first service! I'm considering taking it to Domlur/Indranagar Khivraj (which is where I got the bike delivered). There's a little apprehension, though, from what one of the guys had shared here (oil leak from air filter post-first-service). I've gather that Auto Service at Banashankari is slightly better of the lot, but is there a 'major' difference in the level of service between this place and Khivraj @ Domlur? Guys who have been to both these places, can you comment please?

I was for one not comfortable with leaving my Ninja at the showroom after paying for it. The dealer readily let me take it home on a temp reg number. Leave aside the temp number rules as in my experience the police will just make up a rule to get a fine from you. And in such cases arguing does not help. If you do take it home make sure you don't ride it on the temp number during the day else the traffic police will be on your case. I used to mostly take it out for a spin either at late night after 10pm or early in the morning @ 6 am on a temp number. I got the vehicle registered in 4-5 days due to holidays in between.
Very True- "Motorcycling is not, of itself, inherently dangerous. It is, however, extremely unforgiving of inattention, ignorance, incompetence, or stupidity."

I like- "Bikes are not supposed to be a rational decision. If you can park it and walk away without looking back to admire it, you got the wrong one."

Go to 'Helmet discussion thread' here on xBhp for all kinds of info on helmets.
I myself have a SOL Metalman to go with my KTM, which you may or may not like,
but that is one of the many options you have nonetheless.

Rev limiter (if that's what you're referring to) isn't locked. Ever.
Rev limiter is fixed to 10,500 rpm in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears, and 10,000 rpm in 5th and 6th gears (which is a stupid decision by KTM engineers because peak power is at that same cutoff 10,000 rpm).

It's the gear shifting rpm LIGHT that is initially set to lower values, and at 1st service set to higher values. It's there to help you shift gears at optimum rpm.

There are 2 values - rpm1 and rpm2. The red gear shifting light starts blinking when the bike crosses rpm1 and is fully lit when it crosses rpm2.
Those rpm1 and rpm2 values can be easily be set by anyone at any time, just look at the owner's manual.

I don't see how that's practically possible... Simple as that.

To get a real clarification on the first part of your post regarding the availability of service you should contact KTM directly (via email [email protected]) - You could also request them if they could (or plan to) have their services guys sent to your city say maybe every two months or so to get the bikes that are sold in your city serviced. Apart from regular servicing, like you mentioned, if something goes wrong that makes the bike unusable, you should clarify if they will send their mechanics to your city or will help in transporting the bike to the main service station.
And you parent's concern regarding safety on the highway is definitely right from their point of view

That is actually a very good idea to ask KTM itself and if they are willing to assist me by coming to my city in case of a breakdown, the problem would be solved and my parents would also agree. I will email them and hope they say something sweet so that I can start dreaming about this bike. (Well actually I have started the dreaming part but with a risk of being left heartbroken )
                            Thanks bro.

                            It's totally not a problem.

Duke is the first bike I owned where at both first and second services, when mechanic asked me if I have any issues, I answered "nothing".

Sure, bad luck *could* always happen and you're stranded with a serious issue away from service center, but from what I read in this and other forums in past, KTM guys can and will come to any place if it is not possible for you to reach a service center.

Unless you have a bad luck, Duke is a bike which will hardly give you any issues, especially serious ones where you're not able to reach a service center.
You'll usually need to visit a service center only for regular services.

And anyway, 65 km can hardly be considered as "far away". Especially for Duke and in regard to previous speeding comments, lol...

So, have no worries. It's a good and reliable bike.
It would be my first bike too. I am graduating from Honda Activa

Good to hear that this bike is as reliable as this. Thanks.

Yes Walter, the risk is high, but I do not want to leave any chance of wasting (a huge amount of) money. I'll be emailing KTM and lets see what they say.
                            Thanks.

                              • Initial Dealings

                                hey everyone,

First of all, i'd like to thank everyone who has helped me finalize my decisions and answered the queries I had.

I went to the dealer today, finalized the process, paid the amount by cheque, and selected the bike. Here's how it went.

So, first, I walked into the showroom, met the person whom I'd talked to earlier. He recognized me and I told him I'd like to make the full payment.

Then, he asked me the color and showed me the stock which was available. As pointed out by everyone, I followed all the common steps, selected a bike which i liked. Gear shifts are smooth, no problems with scratches and all that, overall excellent

Then, I submitted my docs for registration, asked him about the time for this, he said its gonna happen only by wednesday! I made up my mind that I didnt want to leave the bike till then at the showroom and informed him that I'd take it on temp regn. He was okay with it and asked me to be careful with the cops

So, finally after finishing all these works, I was informed that they will release the vehicle only on saturday after the cheque gets cleared. I took down the VIN, chassis and engine numbers of the bike and walked out with a heavy heart. I so wanted to get the bike today itself

and now the long wait till Saturday starts................

                                P.S.

He offered me a roadside assistance program membership, I forgot the name. He said, for 700rs, they'd offer assistance in case of any emergencies i.e. breakdowns, punctures, empty tank etc. and take the bike to a workshop within 100km radius for free. And its multiple use. Seems like a good deal. What do you guys think??
