Thanks, dishayu. Yes, it's the 1st free service I'm talking about too. And my bad, these figures aren't what I've been billed. I just took these numbers from one of the old posts that had a detailed price list. And reg. the diagnosis, is this normally done for all bikes during service or only if there's a major complaint or issue of any sort? And do they share the diagnosis report/output?

Just got my 1st service done n after the service the service guy set my RPM1- 9000 n RPM2-10500. So i asked him wat is the meaning and use of rpm1 n rpm2 and he told me RPM1 is applicable for first 4 gears n RPM2 for 5th n 6th and wen u get that red lite of RPM meter it means danger n u should slow down. i know he is not making sense but i myself am not sure wat does RPM METER n RPM LIMITER do in real.....so plzzzz explain and ya as i am done with my 1st service can i redline n ride my bike whatever way i want it????. plzzz do reply guys super confusedLast edited by sanjana k; 03-15-2013, 03:17 PM.

Motul 7100 20W50 - 1 liter= Rs 725
Oil filter: RS 65Walter why don't you upload the bill here so the Duke owners can have look into it and advice you.Originally posted by dishayu View PostYou need 1.3L of engine oil, Not sure why only 1L was billed.
.
BTW if your bike is been filled with only new 1L oil then was 300ml from old creepy oil existing in your engine ? or 300ml oil is missing from your engine now ??
Check your oil level properly.

Somen, like I'd written in my previous message: "...And my bad, these figures aren't what I've been billed. I just took these numbers from one of the old posts that had a detailed price list.". I copy+pasted from the price list and hence the 1L. The bike's due to return from service this evening; don't know the bill amount yet. I was just trying to understand the different cost factors that could sum up to the estimate fo Rs. 1750 which I've been given by the service center.
@Sanjana, someone had very recently written about the RPM thingy. You might want to scroll back a few pages in this very thread.

Don't worry then... Just check the bill and ask for full details if not present. As here in my place still on Yamaha SVC don't give bill, they give only if we insist.Originally posted by walter View PostI was just trying to understand the different cost factors that could sum up to the estimate fo Rs. 1750 which I've been given by the service center.
Do check the manual and verify all those checkups and service are done in your 1st service. Still some svc acts like they are doing favour on customer over free service.
Ride safe.

Thanks, Somen; will do.
After I'd posted here, I mailed KTM customer care with the same queries (more to see if I'd get any response). Turns out, prompt they are, indeed! Bravo! They responded to my mail and called me shortly after that. The personnel (one, Mr. Chandrashekar) patiently answered my queries. Here's a synopsis of what he said:
1) Engine diagnosis is standard during service and is done for all bikes (not just the ones with engine issues). The customer is free to go and have a look when the diagnosis is being done (there's no prints of any sort from the tool generally), which would normally take only about 10mins max to check the history and other engine parameters.
2) Motul 7100 1L costs about Rs. 770 per litre (tax included). Since it would take 1.3 - 1.4 litres, two litres of the oil is normally billed to the customer, who can choose to either take the remaining oil or leave it at the service center (supposedly with one's name and bike number marked, that'll then be used during the next service). That makes it 1540 for Motul alone. (I was a little curious to know about Motul 300V and he said it's not exactly recommended by KTM for normal city use; is suggested for extreme weather like in Leh).
3) Chain lube would cost Rs. 96 (tax included)
4) Coolant top-up, if required, would be around Rs. 30.
5) He probably missed mentioning the filter, which I guess would be changed in the 1st free service. From the price list, that's Rs. 65.
So the math is working out alright! What's left to be seen now is the quality of the actual service.
Aside: enquired at the service center about the oil leak from the air filter issue that a member had posted some weeks back. The engineer said that the space beneath the seat was stuffed with cloth & other things that were obstructing the flow of air into the air filter, which led to problems in the air intake, eventually resulting in the oil leak. Not sure if its the same bike and same issue but this is what I was told.

1. Engine diagnosis isn't chargable during free service, i'm sure.Originally posted by walter View PostThanks, Somen; will do.

2. That's not true at least for my service center. I was charged for 1.4*(Price of 1L) for engine oil. 300V runs the engine 1-2 bars cooler, my personal experience is that it's better than 7100 in every possible way.
3. Cost me 40-odd bucks
4. I don't think this would bother you, i don't think it would be needed though.
5. Same for me.Last edited by dishayu; 03-15-2013, 07:18 PM.Bajaj Pulsar 150 : 2004-2005

1. Yes, I probably missed mentioning that. The engine diagnosis is covered among the free services I was told.
2. Interesting. I guess I'll go with 7100 for now. The Bajaj oil that the bike has run on so far hasn't been all that effective. (I'd stand next to a Volvo bus at a traffic light on the Duke and the two engines would compete against each other to see which produces greater heat!) Will run 7100 for some time and then maybe switch to 300V if need be.

@walter:
Yes, the service center buys 2 L of oil, uses 1.4 L, and will give you back the remaining of oil which you can bring next time you change the oil. So next time you'll just need to buy another 1 L. It's a standard practice by SCs.
As for which oil, from what I read so far in this thread most people say FS Motul 7100 runs hotter (but smooth) than mineral one, but that 300V is even better and cooler than 7100.
I switched to 7100 after first 2000 km of Motul 3100 (fully mineral oil, which is best for running in), but will switch to 300V next time I change the oil.Last edited by splus; 03-15-2013, 06:00 PM.

Folks had a kind of stationary fall with the bike. Was about to stop near the sony world junction in koramangala late night and out of the blue had a fall while applying breaks. Didn't notice the cable wires lying in the road :-( Looks like while applying the breaks, the back wheel was over the cables and slid and lost control of the bike! Few good souls helped me in coming up!
Nothing major - but the right side crash guard is bent. Is it worth replacing the crash guard with frame sliders?
