    Dukers/Xbhpians,
Appreciate your experience and thoughts. Yesterday, something worst(according to me) happened with my Duke. I was in a good speed maintaining higher RPM and was in 5th gear, Suddenly I saw an obstacle and applied brake immediately and shifted 2 gears down. The gear shift didn't engage properly and without noticing this I revved it, Suddenly KLUTHUK sound came out for a second as we hear from the Bajaj CHETHAK's usually when the gears don't engage properly. My heart came to my throat for a while.
    Now My question is,
    • will it effect the Clutch plates or any part of the engine and will I be noticing some performance degradation in future?
    • If so, then can it be covered under warranty?
    • What measures to be taken from now?
    • Is there any check to make sure everything is right/have any problem?

No problem's so far with my Duke. From now on wards, I am trying to shift the gears a little bit hard, instead of smooth applications.
    KTM Lover,

    Zak

Chill Dude. Dont worry. Next time make sure you shift properly. How many KM' have you done since your last servicing. If its due, get the oil changed and relax. These machines are not that fragile to break so easily.

@bala.gg Thanks. These days it's getting quite hot here too. During the winters it will be a blessing!

          1. Fuel Type - Unleaded Premium 95 RON (I need to check if this is available in Chennai)
          2. Breaking Period (Running In) - Procedures
          3. Oil - I am seeing in the KTM threads (in KTM BLogs) that they use Mineral Oil for Breaking In period and not synthetic oil. Also, what about the service quality in Chennai after nearly 1 1/2 years of serving KTM Customers.
          4. Do we really need a exhaust for 200? Because sometimes Chennai roads gets water logged and is there a danger that water may accidentally forces through the unprotected or little elevated echaust?

Also, I am seeing tons of accessories in the KTM Website but in Chennai showroom does not have anything like Side Box etc... - very clean and sleek.

          Thanks in advance.
          1. You need atleast 91 octane fuel. Normal unleaded petrol as i found out is less than 90 octane. 87 or 88 i read. I use Xtra premium from indian oil, power from hp or speed from
bharat petroleum. I make it a point to atleast feed my duke to tank full with 97 octane speed atleast once in a month.

          2. Running in period is 1000kms where the rpm should not go beyond 7500 and if it can be above 4500rpm as well its good. i mean between 4500rpm-7500rpm. But well as i did it, in
the beginning dont go beyond 4000rpm, then 5000rpm then 6000rpm then 7000rpm and finally 7500rpm. the best way to ensure better engine life. i did it, but not perfectly as the
engine is just crazy, i begs you at your knees to be ridden faster!

          3. Use Motul 4T 7100 20W50 oil. its good. i use it and have positive results. you can co for better ones too if u wish but this much is adequate. About servicing i can only talk about
india as in general. The service engineers are not very knowledgeable as a whole because they themselves are new to this kind of bike. But you can find some good engineers
around which you will have to search yourself with a torch in your hand!

          4. I AM AN EXPERT HERE !!! I HAVE SUPERB EXPERIENCE IN THIS FIELD. I rode my bike in heavy rains through headlight high water and the bike just cruised away with a nice exhaust
like sound. no problem whatsoever. Not even a stall. It was like me riding a motorboat for 3 hours!!! Trust me...I CAN RIDE THIS BIKE TO CROSS OCEANS IF IT DOESNT SINK
CHOCKING MY BREATH! Seriously, i found this bike loving water. Water is no problem for the bike at all. if you want to know more about my awesome experience with the duke in
water, send me a personal message.

By the way, I am looking forward to buying the akrapovic exhaust but not due to water problems but becaus the sound of the exhaust is ma ma miya!

About powerparts, they are awesome but rarely available in india sadly.

          cheers!
Experience? It was one hell of a rollercoaster ride. My heart still goes upto 11000rpm when my eyes see the bike every morning! I do have a helmet but its the normal studds helmet which we all know sucks to the core. I bought a pair of gloves yesterday and looking forward to buy riding gear as well as a better helmet. And i have clocked over 1700kms now but i still have the same problem, i have sent a long email to the ktm guys.

Finally found someone buying the duke on a finance plan...I thought I was the only one...!!!
Dude, i bought the bike with my own salary and stuff. I did not have enough time to accumulate all the money to buy it with cash. Secondly, i cant take help from parents so this was the only way out. I wanted the bike no matter what and i had only 3 options. Beg, borrow, or steal.

I selected the 2nd option. Thank God it worked, or i would have to go to the 3rd

So, how much is your emi?

Btw, the mod is not good. it is ugly and would create issued during rain. It'll splash water all over the bike and the rider

Thanks folks for your detailed responses. I looked at 390 but decided to stick to 200 due to price (though I felt it is lot cheaper than Ninja 300 which is costing nearly Rs 4 Lakhs). There were couple of bikes in the show-room really breathtaking (one is like Freeride 350 and another is 1190 Superbike). The kind of engineering, fit and finish is really unmatched.

Looks like 200 is a good start and if our roads get better (and I get richer) may be in few years from now, I can try afford one of the heavy end for fun riding.

My D200 is more domestic abuse for work, shopping and other city riding needs.

BTW, we definitely need to do something on Powerparts - I understand most of them may be for biker community in Western countries where they tend to fix things on their own instead of taking it to a shop (except geeks in Xbhp, ofcourse) but there are certain fancy accessories like exhaust, side bags looks really cool I don't mind pay little extra.

Even i've bought it on EMI, at times its the most feasible option. No regrets on buying the Duke at all.

About the tail tidy, you'l have to buy the KTM Powerpart from ebay UK or eBay Germany.

                  Good to know there are
People buying dukes in finance coz on my delivery day 3 dukes were delivered on full cash payment.
will check the power parts..called the performance racing store in Mumbai that day for R&G tail tidy they'll have it in stock in some days...but have to go down there for that...

Fan should kick in one bar below top of the lower part of temp meter. As always with liquid cooling bikes - it's recommended not to turn off the bike if the fan is running. Wait until it stops and drops the temp.

It would be much better if you can change the oil once before the service. All the metal particles from the new engine accumulate inside and after 400-500 km on odo you can feel the engine becoming heavier with less power if you don't change the oil.
Changing the oil and oil filter at around 200-300 km should clear those initial metal particles and make the engine breathe much easier.

For best run in results keep the oil mineral (best is Motul 5100) for initial 2000 km and then switch to fully synthetic Motul 7100 or 300V.

I do let the radiator fan to cool the bike before turning the bike off.

I was planning to change to Motul 3000 4T Mineral oil ( I think Motul 5100 is semi- synthetic) but it isn't available here and you can't get it delivered by courier. I also contacted KTM Jammu to send over two oil filters and the recommended mineral oil , however they said that if I change the oil myself it will void the warranty.
