Ok guys, so finally there is an Austrian Bug in my garage, Black D200 comes home
Thanks for the thread to have cleared up my questions.

There are few things that are causing me go "Ummm, Hmmm, is it so? WHY?"
      1. The idling is done at 1500-1600 RPM on a cold start. The Bug has done some 60 kms in 3 days of ownership and this has remained consistent.
      2. The throttle is kinda slow in the 1-2-3 gears (it is this part where it is noticed). If gives me feel of switching from On to Reserve in carb bikes. A sudden burst is felt after 3750-4000 RPM.
      3. There is a particular metallic sound note which is kind of loud when accelerating. Is this how it is supposed to be?

      What I like:
      1. I am tiny man, so I love the playground sized seat to wander off and rest my rears anywhere I feel comfortable. Coming from Pulsar 150, the same distance isn't rear numbing on Duke so far.
      2. Light weight - I mean seriously, this can give complex to Megan Fox.
      3. Superb chassis and ergonomics - The curve on the road nearby on P150 felt bouncy and scary. Come Duke, the curve looks like a play zone. The lean it can easily go it just WOW!!
      4. Post 3-4K RPM, the power surge is just amazing. Being a short stroke, it climbs the revs faster than anything that I have seen or ridden.
      5. Brakes are new but the feel is assuring. Again, a massive upgrade from P150.

      What I didn't like:
      1. Plastic used a places like the exhaust pipe cover near the rear mono-shock, the rear mudguard and the front mudguard is hard textured. This means cleaning it is a pain.
      2. There is some tiny vibrations that are felt on the footpegs at lower speeds but vanish as speeds increase (unlike the general trend where the vibes increase as speed increases).
      3. Idling seems to be 200 RPM more than what manual suggests. Any cure about this?
      4. Snatchy throttle response in the initial 5-10 degree rotation. This could be due to loose throttle wire or stupid Indian Oil Petrol.
      5. A little too much of engine braking for my taste. I am on the process of unlearning the P150 gearshifts(up and down) and learn how to anticipate the same on D200.

Run-in is in progress which is almost factory recommended way. The last 100-150 kms before I go for 1st servicing will have higher RPMs touching. A gradual RPM increase is what I will be going for. The RPM 1 was set at 7000 RPM and RPM 2 was set at 7500 (Factory specified). I have changed the RPM 1 to 5000 RPM as suggested by manual. This will go up to 6000 after I cross 500 kms on odo.

Can I use the engine kill switch when I stop at the signal for a long time? I am asking this because it does a system check every time the engine kill switch completes the circuit. Also, is it advisable to kill the engine (either by switch or by key) when the engine has run for some considerable time and is hot?
      Regards,
      Akash Yadav

Congrats Akash and have lots of fun with your black beauty .
          1. Bike cold-starts and idles at 1500 rpm ( kinda auto-choke feature you can say ) but after 2-3 minutes comes down to 1100 or 1200 rpm . It's absolutely normal .
          2. Get the throttle cable checked , bike is vicious in the first three gears . My bike unleashes hell right after 2Kish mark .
          3. Yes it's normal , wait for your first service, once you switch to FS-oil after first service it won't be there. Stick to the manual for the break-in process.

Never ever turn-off your bike at any signal my friend , it immediately switch off the fan too and you will notice temp-bars rising rapidly . Engine kill switch is for emergency purposes ONLY . So stay away from that and always use the key-kill method because battery still drains and used by components even if you have killed the engine by switch but with ignition key switched on . When you reach your destination give the bike a minute or two if possible to before switching it off with key. Just remember in short, no engine switching off at signals and stay away from kill switch .
It's a rev-happy engine and it becomes more smoother and vibration free as you go 4K+ rpm .

Have fun and wish you more smiles per gallon ; )

            Thanks mate.
Actually, coming from humble carb bike to baby monster is a big jump and I need to unlearn all 3.5 years of Carb'ed things.
I always switched off my Pulsar at signals using kill switch and that helped in reducing the fuel consumption. Its a loud bike, people will punch me if I keep it ON at signals, close to their cars :P

Idle RPM in Duke is not fixed...it is intelligent enough to vary it according to the need...just make sure that when the engine is hot, it does not exceed 1400.

              2. The throttle is kinda slow in the 1-2-3 gears (it is this part where it is noticed). If gives me feel of switching from On to Reserve in carb bikes. A sudden burst is felt after 3750-4000 RPM.

The snatchy feeling is kind of KTM's DNA....it is the bike's characteristic...if you go through this thread, you will see people pointing out that even bigger Dukes have this character.

              3. There is a particular metallic sound note which is kind of loud when accelerating. Is this how it is supposed to be?

That is the exhaust tone...enjoy it

Duke is not as smooth as, say a Honda, so these vibrations will always be there, they will increase as more Kms are clocked.

              3. Idling seems to be 200 RPM more than what manual suggests. Any cure about this?

Check when hot and go to service.

It will decrease after runing in is over. Use lots of it in 3rd gear during runing in peroid. Piston rings will seal better.

So the harsh ride issue is resolved to a large extent. Culprit was the rear suspension.
It was set to level 9. Yes, you read that right: NINE.
I was riding around in the off road circuit that is Mumbai with a setting suited to a MOTO GP track, thanks to the stellar servicing done by the Ghatkopar svc guys.
I was told that t5he setting was being changed to 7, which I initially protested to, but later let changed thinking of giving it a shot.

I visited the seawoods svc yest and had the setting changed to 6. The ride is a lot less harsh now, although not what it should be still. I think a rim job to correct the slight bent in the front rim might help. Also I am planning to use setting 5 on the shock and see how it goes.

Btw I have gained some kilos of late after getting married , so should I use a smaller number number at the back now?
                I am 80 Kilos now.
Does anyone know any place where I can go to consult the front suspension damping etc in Mumbai/Pune? Can it be done at all ?

PS : After 2 years with the bike, a bit of an ennui has set in and I feel lethargic tending to the bike. The reason the incorrect setting was not spotted by me. Also I do not clean the bike at all these days where as earlier it used to be a proper wash every week/two weeks or so.
This incident should serve to remind us to pay good attention to the bike and not get lazy.

I have finally decided to write about my experience owning the KTM Duke 200.
The ODO currently stands at 58630kms
Tenure of Ownership: 2 yrs 3 Months
                  Average Fuel Consumption:
                  • 340 - 360kms per tank in the city (usually fill between 9-9.2lts)
                  • 260 - 280kms per tank on the highway (average speed about 90-110kmph)

I have realised that once you are in the 125- 135kmph limit you range drops to 220-250kms per tank
                  Top Speed:
                  Stock v9 - 144kmph (43 tooth)
                  Kiirus Remap v1.2- 153kmph (42tooth)
                  Stock v11 – 137kmph (42tooth)
                  ECU Replaced Stock v11- 144kmph (42tooth)

                  Upgrades:
                  • K&N KT-1211 Replacement Air Filter
                  • Michelin Pilot Street Tires
                  • Rolon Chain Kit
                  • 390 Handle Bar with bar ends
                  • Titax Adjustable levers
                  • Custom made high tension clutch and lifter springs
                  • Philips Diamond Vision H4-12v 55/60w

                  Fluids:
                  • Motul 300v
                  • Engine ICE
                  • AMSOil Series 600 DOT4 Brake Fluid

                  Issues faced to Date
                  • Rear Monoshock Sagging (Replaced under warranty)
                  • Multi-Function Display not displaying readout (Replaced under warranty)
                  • Stator Coil Failure (Replaced under warranty)
                  • Cracked Rims ( Covered by insurance, the new rims are heavier but definitely take more of a beating)
                  • Broken Fork Seals ( No Longer an issue, no broken seal for over a year after regular cleaning of the Fork seals)
                  • ECU changed (Flashing the KIIRUS remap from the ECU, corrupted it, replaced under warranty – very lucky)

                  Maintenance Schedule:
                  • Chain adjustment/lubrication 500-750kms, interval ha increased to over 1000kms after switching to Rolon
                  • Oil filter and oil change – 5000kms
                  • Timing Chain adjustment- 15000kms
                  • Tires – 8000kms (MRF Zappers), Michelins – 6000kms and counting
                  • Airfilter cleaning and lubrication – K&N Recharger Kit – 10000kms

                  Long trips
                  • Hyderabad- Tirupathi- Chennai- Pondicherry- Rameshwaram
                  • Hyderabad-Pune-Bangalore-Chennai-Hyderabad
                  • Hyderabad-Kanyakumari-Hyderabad

As per the guys at the SVC I have one of the most run Dukes in the south. I would like to believe them but I am sure there are a lot of tourers out there who have covered a lot more on their baby KTMs. One think I have to say is that the KTM is not for everyone, you will either love it or hate, I am of the former.
I have had 3 major crashes with the bike and have always gotten away with minor or no injuries.
                  • Hit by a cab while waiting at a signal
                  • Hit by an Audi which ran a red light while crossing the signal
                  • Foot boarding idiot jumped off a running bus and landed and my handlebars.

Part are reasonably cheap and I luckily have never had to spend too much. This bike isn’t a tourer but is capable of chugging miles without complaining. My touring over the past 2 years is testament to that. The bike takes getting used to but once you do, you will find yourself running out of talent before the bike reaches its limits. Extremely easy to throw into a corner and almost as easy to get your knees down, lean over too much and the side stand will get in the way( I have fixed this by bending the rod at the kick stand so that it doesn’t scrape while cornering).
I have never had any major issues with the bike and even those were handled pretty efficiently. Certain parts are always in short stock fork oil seals being one.
Things that people usually claim are “issues” with the bike that I have found to be quite characteristic of owning a bike that delivers whatever is asked of it.
                  • Hard seat, never been a problem, regular doses of donuts and pizza keep my butt well padded
                  • Sounds like an auto – after the K&N I don’t even know what stock sounds like
                  • Pillion Seat is too hard/too small – Ask your pillion to lose weight
                  • Suspension is too hard – I love it for that very reason
                  • Tire grip is iffy – I have to agree with this one, the stock MRFs make you slide at the most inconvenient of times, not an issue after switching to the Michelins
                  • Rear Brake lever is too small – I am size 43 and it is fine for me, I hardly use the rear brake anyway
                  • Cracked Rims – Initially yes, not anymore

                  Upsides to owning a KTM
                  • Parts are cheap
                  • Easy to maintain
                  • Super light
                  • Superb brakes
                  • Flickability in the City
                  • Loads of accessories available
                  • VFM

                  Downsides to owning a KTM
                  • Your friendly neighbourhood mechanic will refuse to touch it
                  • It is a pain to keep clean
                  • If your bike doesn’t start 9/10 you will need to get it towed to the SVC
                  • Loads of plastics, prone to getting scratched

                    Upsides to owning a KTM
                    • Parts are cheap
                    • Easy to maintain
                    • Super light
                    • Superb brakes
                    • Flickability in the City
                    • Loads of accessories available
                    • VFM

                    Downsides to owning a KTM
I agree on all the points you have mentioned, and i also enjoy my duke whenever i ride.
I would like to know more about the k&n air filter since u have been using it for quite some time.
                    1) most of the people advice against changing to after market filters because they let more dirt to get into engine.
                    2) how often does it need cleaning
                    3) is there any differnce in the low end

Above reasons are confusing me, should i go for k&n or not because i dont have the budget for slip-on right now. Thanks

About getting dirt into the engine I doubt it, the Service manager did tell me that I will burn my valves after using it for 10k kms, however it has been over 8k kms and the engine is still running like new. K&N says every 50k kms for cleaning with the recharger kit, but I cleaned it at 6k kms and found almost no dirt accumulated while cleaning, I have decided to space the next one to 10k kms to see how it fares. The kit costs Rs1450 in Hyderabad, and lasts for about 2-3 cleaning and lubing sessions.
There is a definite difference in low end, the snatchy throttle response is gone and you have a nice clean pull all the way for 3k- 8k

The chain can be adjusted at home, the sliders have markers and is a pretty simple DIY, however the SVC doesn't charge me for the chain adjustment when I do go.

There is a spring type seal at the bottom of the fork seal that holds it in place, slide it down, clean it and push it back in place, also removing any visible dirt or mud from the forks helps a long way in keeping the seals intact

Thanks a lot . I have no clue how to adjust the chain . If and only if possible for you to make a new DIY thread for this or maybe just explain little elaborately that will be awesome if you have time later on .
You mean those rubber grip like things at the bottom ? I will look at it . thanks a lot .

The ODO currently stands at 58630kms
Tenure of Ownership: 2 yrs 3 Months
                            Average Fuel Consumption:
                            • 340 - 360kms per tank in the city (usually fill between 9-9.2lts)
                            • 260 - 280kms per tank on the highway (average speed about 90-110kmph)

                            • AMSOil Series 600 DOT4 Brake Fluid

                            Maintenance Schedule:
                            • Timing Chain adjustment- 15000kms
Hi Pizzaboi. That is some impressive number on the odo. makes me hang my head in shame. I have been able to only muster 31k in 2 years 2 months of ownership.

Now coming to the other numbers on your post .
Do you really get 37 kmpl in city riding? I have only been able to get around 32 max. These days its' around 30 kmpl.
Is it because the K&N , as may be it makes the mixture leaner? Or my bike needs some overhaul?

I struggle to get to 130 thse days. Do you still reach these speeds with ease? or has there been a bit of a lag crept in. Definitely in my case.
The bike feels rough to accelerate. The svc had suggested a clutch plate replacement. Did you get that changed ever?

what are the v9/v11 etc here? I don't understand.

How much better the 300 V is over the 7100 FS ? Is there a noticeable difference in smoothness/performance? I have heard the 300V may leak since it's thinner than the 7100?

How did you realize that the timing chain needs replacement? Any pointers? Or is it recommended in the manual? I haven't seen the manual in ages. may be it's time.

How much the K&N and the Rolon chain kit cost ? My bike is bone stock and may be it's time I get going with some mods.

We did get it checked, the bike isn't running leaner but it is burning fuel more efficiently, the emissions tests have impressively low numbers.
I usually don't ride too hard in the city, so 36-37kmpl is normal, in fact if I am to believe the MFD, I get about 42kmpl but that I doubt.

Never got my clutch changed, still is pretty good condition so it should last me another 20-25k kms. The bike reaches 135-137kmph with ease, after that we need to ease on the throttle a bit so that ECU doesn't cut in, if there is no head wind 141kmph is a breeze and I can hold it at a constant 139kmph without the ECU cutting in.

what are the v9/v11 etc here? I don't understand.
The initial lot of bikes were sold with the 43T sprocket and were running on the version 9 ECU map, you know the same one with the rollover sensor issue. We were latter remapped to version 11 and were changed to the current 42T sprocket. The current lot of bikes run on version 18. I personally think it lacks character.

How much better the 300 V is over the 7100 FS ? Is there a noticeable difference in smoothness/performance? I have heard the 300V may leak since it's thinner than the 7100?

Never used 7100 so can't comment, been with 300v from the first oil change at 1000kms but I have not faced any leakage issues.

How did you realize that the timing chain needs replacement? Any pointers? Or is it recommended in the manual? I haven't seen the manual in ages. may be it's time.
You can hear the sound, it is a very irritating ticking sound, the SVC guys call it the tappet sound, sometimes they just check the Valve clearance and replace the shims, if the chain is badly stretched or worn, they will replace it, the first time I got it checked, the shims were replaced, the second time they changed the chain, I am due for another checkup since the sound has started creeping in again

How much the K&N and the Rolon chain kit cost ? My bike is bone stock and may be it's time I get going with some mods.
The K&N was for Rs.4000 and the Rolon Kit was Rs.1500
Hope you got all the answers you were looking for.

As per the emissions test CO % is down from 0.89% to 0.47% and HC is down from 0998 PPM to 0631PPM.

I used to hit 138, yes with ease, and the rev limiter would set in abruptly.
