• Re: KTM 390 - The original Hooligan - Ownership Thread

The 6th gear of the Duke 390 is kinda tall as compared to other gears. So if the Duke can do 100kmph at just around 5000rpm and 130kmph at around 7500rpm, then I'm pretty sure that it can do 175kmph atleast at 9500rpm. However, it is very very difficult to hit revv limiter at 6th gear due to naked design, gearing etc. But still, it has a respectable top speed.

The tall 6th gear helps it do that and he didn't misread the speedo indication.
According to all the reviews the 390's top gear is so tall that it is impossible to hit the limiter in the 6th and the limiter is at 10500. If we do some maths the speed at 10500rpm with this kind of a 6th gear(100kmph at 5k rpm) should be close to 200kmph but the bike does not have that much power or torque to hit those speeds.

Why 2wheels over 4.....
Its because 'Whatever it is, it's better in the wind!'

The bike is superb. Cornering is very easy :-) reached 175kmph on a plain road without wind very easily and felt it could go more. I slowed down though. I could maintain constant 130+ without difficulty on hassan bangalore road.
Btw. Did 2k kms :-)

That's some nice triple digit figures Could you also tell me what FE did you get at the end of the ride? Not that I'm expecting FE from that bike. Just wanna get an idea about the tank range we can expect.

Dang! A superlight streetfighter doing 175kmph! Seriously that monster single takes the cake alwys. Its as if the whole bike was designed around just the engine!
I just hope that speedo doesnt have some some kind of speed sensing limiter( as being discussed in the d200 thread and i am not talking about only the rev limiter).

Now after somebody comes up with a ecu remaps or so maybe just maybe n hopefully it would reach the ~185km/h mark!
That would be scary fast considering this class of bike and we all know the duke speedo is pretty accurate..

@ronitgandhi24 .. I had RTR 180 without ABS and I am used to using disk brakes without ABS.. so havent checked the ABS.. nothing unusual about the brakes though..
@viper3683 .. I did the first service at 900kms after the chennai trip.. he put the motul 7100 10w50 engine oil. Servicing cost was about 1750rs. Then did a chain service at 1,5k kms and 2k kms.
@tusharsmoily .. I have put fuel worth 4,500 rs and have run about 2k kms .. if you take 80rs petrol per liter, i get 35kmpl approx .. Since I did majority of my 2k kms on highway this mileage makes sense.
@maverick180 .. if I hold the throttle at 2k types rpm, power delivery is inconsistent .. this I believe is because of the compression ratio of the bike. I have used the normal fuel so far ..it was not possible for me to find speed or premium petrol in highways, this could also have caused the problem..
I dont do engine braking.. but yes, throttle is very responsive

We had a KTM demo stall near office yesterday and went and checked out the 390. Few things to note from my discussion with the sales executive and personal observations.

1. Tank mould/groove hits the knee for people over 5'11. Same as in d200.

2. Tyres!! Till they setup a factory in India, tyre cost will be 22k per pair!! Although he was confident that they will last for 15k kms, being a soft compound, I guess they should hold good for 10k kms.

3. Servicing cost will be on par with d200 since most of the things are shared between 2 and the spare price seems cheap.

4. Faired version will come by 2014 september!!

Hope this helps people who are looking for D390.

Im sure you would be in awe of the bike, and rightly so, it sure does deserves all the credit and more. I really would like your answer to the fact that for riding 2k+ kms there must be something which you do NOT like about the bike. Can you please list the cons, if any, which you have faced in this short tenure of owning the bike. It will definitely help us evaluate the bike better.

Thank you

.. In his exact words-- Also to say delivery will be done by 90 days period "hopefully". Lot of demand and 1 mfg unit so the problems. Why do you want 390 its too much power if you want 200 we will deliver in 4 days.

jeevan.life - No dude the KTM guys have told that a set of tyres will cost 11k a pair coz they have ordered the tyres in bulk! Many people here on xbhp claimed this.

Guys I am from Thane. I'll be booking my Duke 390 on January. Will I still have a 3 month waiting period?
