since your bike is kick start, it will have a puny 2.5 amp battery..
you can buy the same one if you don't plan to modify brackets...
my jump was from 2.5 to 9 amp
i had to cut each and every side of the bracket to fit this huge 9 amp battery.

if you want you can do this too, but not obligatory.
good brands like amaron, exide are very good in performance, the model num is limited to your amp reading, like 2.5 amp, 6 amp or 9 amp.

if you can go for a big one then its well and good.
but you will have to sacrifice your tool kit space for that.
if not then go for 2.5 amp one..
    no hassles, direct fit.

but first try charging your battery and see the performance.
go for the batt that's easily available around and has a good service regarding replacement and charging.
    an of course good warranty.
but please opt for known brands not unknown ones.
Giving a lot to a fiero.
Expecting a lot from a fiero.

I tried to have the battery recharged... alas the battery does not take any charging ... guess that's the end of it's life .... need to get it replaced soon. The bike still functions and still starts with a single kick .... I guess the headlamps work without batteries too. The horns have become really feeble. Think I'll go for Amaron this time coz the one I have is Excide which lasted a little over two years. The original one provided with the bike was really good as it lasted a good 5 years (don't remember which one it was). Let's see what's readily available in the market. Do you think the 7 amp battery provided with the new Suzuki GS150R is good? ... will my ancient RR unit be able to charge this extra heavy load? will it be possible to put-up a more powerful headlight with the 6, 7 or 9 amp battries.? ... about 50 W headlight???

      • to increase the load, you will have to rewind your coil.
your current setup is 35w, anything above it will drain more juice from your battery.

meanwhile you can stay at 2.5 amp without any issues, if you do plan to put up more than 1 light then you need higher amps as well as coil re-winding..

HID's are the thing of today, but it requires a hell lot of money initially to make your bike HID ready.
I'm completely bankrupt after buying an ape rr, amaron 9 amp and single beam hid h3 kit with projector.
i don't have money left to buy a cheap high beam halogen reflector ...

        coming back
the bike runs on a single kick because the stater unit (spark plug) gets current from your kick not your battery...
        your headlamp runs on AC.
it again is controlled by the coil.
the more you revv, the more the magnet rotates and hence the more voltage it generates.

don't underestimate your RR unit dude.
it can take a hell lot of load.
i used the stock rr after rewinding the coil for about 3-4 days and battery used to get beautifully charged...

lastly if you just plan to put up a single bulb but a bit more powerful, then go for coil rewinding and keep everything stock.
you can easily fit a 55w bulb or even more, and no battery issues too...

Great! could you please explain how the coil is rewound. I have very little knowledge in this regard. Seems like a good option for my aging bike. Also could you please recommend me a good headlight bulb ... one with bright white lighting .... our Fiero headlight sockets are different. The normal 35w Philips Halogens used in the Uni or Shine dont fit. You have any idea of these types of bulbs? ... will I need to change the reflector of my bike?

            not very difficult.

yes i can help you out, but you need to find a place where your bike can be opened up..
grab an ape rr, and your done....
rest of the things need effort and place...
Thanks for the help buddy.I can come down to your place,if you dont mind, else you can come to my place,I have ample to space to strip down the bike.I can get the Ape RR thats no issues.I have a 5Amp battery, will this take the load,if I convert to DC?

Where did you get your coil rewound?? Hunting for that also since long. So many updates on your bike in less than a month.Thats good to hear.

We can get the work done once the rains are out. Till that time,we can meet at some place & have a cup of coffee.

@Chief : I would suggest you buy Amaron. Its a good battery & heard good reviews about it. I also own a Classic Fiero & have upgraded to 5Amp & changed the headlamp to FX dome type.It will accomodate the new type bulb found in UNI & all other bikes.Light throw is also good. Will post a picture to have a better idea.

            • Yes, do go for the Amaron dry type sealed battery, I am using the 2.5Ah one&it is very good. You will not even need to charge it. And whats more, you can disconnect the drain pipe.
It comes in 2 variants-Alpha&Beta series, with warranty of 5 years&4 years respectively.
I got a Beta series for Rs.600 after exchanging my old Amco battery. You can get it for Rs.700, I got an extra discount since the dealer was known.

Thanks Guys! This forum with you guys have been very helpful ... I think I've learned more here than consulting the mechs and SC people.

Think I'll go for a 5Amp Amaron dry sealed type. I guess it will be an upgrade from the basic 2.5amp. Will this battery fit into the slot neatly or will I need to do some space carving and squeezing to accommodate the cell?

                • Hey Sarvajit,

Did you get that engine problem resolved?

I would suggest you go for new block piston assembly instead of reboring it.Just my personal view here.Because if the reboring is not done properly, you might have to open the engine again & put in a new kit.So might as well do it now.Though it feels costly now,but it will last longer than the rebored kit.

                  Just my 2 cents.

Well, you will have to remove the plastic box that hold the battery currently & make a clamp to accomdate the new cell.I will put up a pic of my cell,so that you have a better idea,as we ride the same version.

                      Hey Vishal,
I checked the oil level a couple of days back&found that it is still half on the dipstick between low&high. Oil also does not feel coarse to touch.
Bike has done 22-2300 kms.since the last service so I am going to wait for it to reach 2500kms., then open up the head&inspect. As of now there is no smoke/loss of mileage too. Bike is still giving the same 45kmpl.&running smooth upto 60kmph, after which the power loss&roughness comes into play.
One of my friends says that minute holes in the packaging can also cause loss in compression leading to power loss. Is this possible?
In any case, since I am going to have the head opened up, I will replace whatever parts are necessary.
And yes, if it has reached the bore stage, I will replace the kit, instead of reboring. Luckily engine spares are available&not even too expensive going by others comments.
I will update by this month end or next month beginning.

Ohk bro.To be frank,I have no clue about this(marked in bold). Did you say you are using Castrol?
I would suggest not using it.My personal experience says, after a ride of 850kms in a day, upon checking the oil level it was dry & second this happened on my dad's FX also.God knows where that oil vaporised.Try Elf Motogold, your bike will love that oil & you will also Love the ride on it

Do keep us updated on the engine side.

I'm not using Castrol-I'm using TVS Tru4. Only once (last to last service), Petronas oil was filled in&drained out within 1.2K kms.as it didn't suit the bike.
Maybe my friend means holes in the gasket/oil seal can cause loss in compression. Do you think its possible?
Yes, I'm also waiting for the next few hundred kms.to complete so that the bike can have its open heart surgery!
Hope nothing too major is wrong. I will keep you updated.

The one I have right now is sort of yellowish... designed for winter when there is fog.

fiero sockets are h4 like almost every other bike in the market...
at least f2 has and h4 bulb, i don't think classic fiero would have a different bulb... i could be wrong.
                            imjoshee would know better...

was your reflector yellow from stock or it turned yellow now??

regarding coil re-winding well its not a complicated process but finding right guys to get it done is a difficult job...

                            the funda is simple.

there is a stator coil in your bike which has a magnet on top of it..
the coil consists of copper wire winded across each 7 poles.
when you start your bike and the engine runs, the magnet over this stator rotates.
the more you revv the more the magnet rotates, the idea is that this rotation of the magnet over the coil generates ELECTRICITY
the more you revv the better it generates current hence you must have noticed that revving your bike improves your headlight brightness.

in coil RE winding all you do is remove the current copper coil and replace it with a better gauge wire hence it generates better current on SAME rotations.

this is what a stock coil looks like (ignore the circles)

and this is re- winded coil with 19 gauge wire..

i think you understand the concept now...
it generates better electricity and can help to power 100w bulbs too.

but remember if you wind the poles with more number of turns than stock so your top end decreases a bit..
                            not quite noticeable though..

Originally posted by imjoshee View Post

i don't mind you coming here but i have done enough stripping of my bike under my building and dropped a lot of oil and all the other things so these people started hating me and i have a tag of being an embarrassment to the society....

Will post the pic of the battery clamp later in the evening.

                              -------------------------------------------------------------------

                              [QUOTE=NANOtechnology;455808]Finally this thread is running.....
                              keep up the good work...

fiero sockets are h4 like almost every other bike in the market...
at least f2 has and h4 bulb, i don't think classic fiero would have a different bulb... i could be wrong.
                              imjoshee would know better...

was your reflector yellow from stock or it turned yellow now??

regarding coil re-winding well its not a complicated process but finding right guys to get it done is a difficult job...

                              the funda is simple.

there is a stator coil in your bike which has a magnet on top of it..
the coil consists of copper wire winded across each 7 poles.
when you start your bike and the engine runs, the magnet over this stator rotates.
the more you revv the more the magnet rotates, the idea is that this rotation of the magnet over the coil generates ELECTRICITY
the more you revv the better it generates current hence you must have noticed that revving your bike improves your headlight brightness.

in coil RE winding all you do is remove the current copper coil and replace it with a better gauge wire hence it generates better current on SAME rotations.

this is what a stock coil looks like (ignore the circles)

and this is re- winded coil with 19 gauge wire..

i think you understand the concept now...
it generates better electricity and can help to power 100w bulbs too.

but remember if you wind the poles with more number of turns than stock so your top end decreases a bit..
                              not quite noticeable though..

                              -----------------------------------------------------------------------

@Imjoshee:- your Fiero looks lethal ... those aux lamps look powerful. So your 5Amp battery manages those extra lighting? is it possible to install a smaller aux on the leg guard?
Can you tell us a bit about the headlight bulb ... which one do you have and is it possible to fit Philips 35w Germany?

+ please do post the battery and clamp picture

                              -----------------------------------------------------------------------

@NANOtech:- Bro those close-up pictures are amazing ... you seem to be good in photography too. Thanks for the detailed explanation... would like to try it out as my next project if I have a little bit more time.

Yes the thread is running like our Fiero's . The Classic Fiero had a different headlight & the hence the bulb & bulb holder are different. From F2 onwards they shifted to H4 because of better output.

Chief you can go for FX headlight setup. Its easy & quick.I did that setup all by myself.

i had to go to my friends rickshaw's workshop to strip and do the necessary work.. hence if you come here and we start over i think my secretary would escort us to the nearest police station lol just kidding....

i think I'll come there, it would be better, after the rains is a good idea dude...

i got my coil re-winded at thane near my friend's workshop,

I would definitely like to meet ya, but let me install this hid first, atleast I'll have something to brag about.

meanwhile before the other stuff get re-winding done and ape rr...

and how come you install 2 aux lamps with a stock coil....
                                looks great..
                                does it work great too??
Hehehe. Even I get those wierd looks from society members when I stip down my bike & work.

                                Coming back to the topic.

                                1) How much time did it take for rewinding & the charges?

2)Since how long have you been running on the rewinded coil?
The reason for above question is.I go on long tours & because of a busted coil,I do not wish to get stranded at some place.

3)I have an official Ape dealer close to my home.So RR unit is not a issue.

I got the 2 lamps as a pair.Made the clamp all by myself & made it in such a way that I can install two & if need be remove one & switch places. Also it does work great.Use it only when cruising above 60 & some guys try to act smart & not use dipper. The catch here is I have installed a 35w H3 bulb which work great with the 35w headlight.

Get your HID installed man, I am quite eager to meet you & see your setup.

Yes Chief it does look lethal but some find in funny. Though currently I am using only one aux lamp.Have removed the right side one.Use the lamp only on highways & at speeds above 60.Also you can use a small lamp at the leg guard, But I feel the handle is much better place to install at as it will turn with the handle & give you enough light, while at the leg guard it will be pointing to one direction only, even if you take a turn.(Hope you got this, because my explanation is little confusing)

The main headlight bulb is a H4 35/35w Philips,Made in Germany.

Yes will surely put a pic of the clamp. Its raining here from past couple of days & hence I am unable to open the panels & take the pic. Will post it soon.Kindly bear with me.
