Re: Yamaha FZ16 version 2.0
I have stoped lubing the chain now after getting the new chain and sprockets, i am using Gear oil, its easy and less messy ,cheaper and does the job better than chain lube i think.Originally posted by chinmoyaj View PostI used to clean and lube my chain every 500 kms. I used to do that myself. Still it gave up. I was expecting the chain to last atleast 20k. This time I'm going for ROLON. Hope to get some positive results.

For long highway runs, chain lube is better. (I had to get Parachute sachets after stranding with dry chainsOriginally posted by IamAditya View PostI have stoped lubing the chain now after getting the new chain and sprockets, i am using Gear oil, its easy and less messy ,cheaper and does the job better than chain lube i think.

Which brand yamaha uses in fz for chain sprockets because in my R3 chain and sprocket is in good condition. I have done over 14k kms and yamaha uses DID chain sprockets in R3.Originally posted by chinmoyaj View PostI used to clean and lube my chain every 500 kms. I used to do that myself. Still it gave up. Not sure about the brand. Some riders say they've got around 20k of mileage on one set of chain and sprocket and some say that they couln't even complete 10k on one set. Don't know what's going on with yamaha bikes these days. My sprocket has RN written in it. Don't know what that means though. I hope it doesn't mean ROLON.

In case of R3 every owner is getting minimum of 18-20k kms of chain sprocket life. Try dry lube from yamaha they last quite long.Originally posted by chinmoyaj View PostNot sure about the brand. Some riders say they've got what that means though. I hope it doesn't mean ROLON.

Re: Yamaha FZ16 version 2.0
1.Just completed 13k km. Yamaha sprocket chain sucks. My chain had loosened and stuck in frames 3 months back in 11k km .Since then there is a bend in sprocket/chain.I am gettings noise in chain if chain is dry. Though no noise after lubri. But start with 10days after lubri. Chain sucks.
My mistake that i never read that 500km thing
.
now i guess i have to replace chain/sprocket for 2k or more.
2.
Can you tell where in manual?
Here is manual link i uploaded:

Also the chain life depends on how the bike is ridden and how well it has been kept lubricated. So while some may get 35-40k kms life, others get 15k kms life.
And changing only the chain will decrease the chain life substantially and then you will again blame the company for poor quality. Get both the chain and the sprockets changed.Last edited by gopi_xbhp; 02-17-2017, 07:02 PM.Yamaha FZ 2.0 User Manual:

Re: Yamaha FZ16 version 2.0
Even after maintaining my chain and sprocket it gave up in just 12k kms. If you think about the cost involving in a new set of chain and sprocket, then its less than what you spend for the maintenance during 12k kms. You have to lube and clean the chain in every 500kms. So for every 1500 kms, you spend two cans of cleaner and lube. And that would cost you 500 bucks. That makes the total cost to 4000 bucks. And the set of chain and sprocket from the yamaha dealer would cost around 2000 including the labour charge. Thats half the price paid for the maintenance.Originally posted by gopi_xbhp View Post1.Just completed 13k km. Yamaha sprocket chain sucks. Re: Yamaha FZ16 version 2.0
chinmoyaj - that's why I use gear oil or engine oil to clean and lube. Cost ₹140 for a litre, bottle lasts 2 years. Along with a pair of my old jockeys, I clean it every Sunday. Recommended by an Xbhpian.
As for effect, well, my CBR 250 chain is 36,005 kms old. It's an o ring chain though.Last edited by leech; 02-19-2017, 09:42 AM.

Stick to kerosene/diesel for cleaning and 90 gear oil for lubing. Keep the fancy can lube for emergencies/while touring. With a main stand, the chain clean/lube task should be a breeze.

Re: Yamaha FZ16 version 2.0
Hey guys, hope all the FZS FIs are running well.
I missed my last two service dates due to extremely busy schedule. Damn service centre is not open on Sundays. Planning to get it done in a week or two. Has anyone gone the semi synthetic or synthetic route here? If yes what's the feedback?

Its OK to miss service only by "TIME" but not by "Kilometers Traveled" as its very much needed to replace the engine oil (Atleast top up) after covering a certain amount of distance.Originally posted by nomad47 View PostHey guys, hope all the FZS FIs are running well.

My can of Lube runs minimum of 5000-8000 kms. Sometimes even more(13000+ Kms or 1 year). DO NOT over-spray your chain as all it does is dirty the wheel.Originally posted by chinmoyaj View PostEven after maintaining my chain and sprocket it gave up in just 12k kms. Right hand thumb rule for me : Lube every 500 - 700 kms or 2 weeks. Clean once every 2 lube sprays.
So Say - 0kms [Clean+Lube] -> 500kms [ Only Lube] -> 1000kms [Clean+Lube] -> 1500kms [Only Lube] -> 2000kms [Clean+Lube] ..... So on.
I use Diesel / kerosene / Petrol to clean the chain. Sprays are not at all economical for cleaning.

Re: Yamaha FZ16 version 2.0
Thats right. I realized that after finishing one can of the cleaner in cleaning the chain twice. I now use kerosene for cleaning and Motul chain lube. Can engine oil/gear oil be used to lube the chain? Though many people told me that its very bad for sealed chains.Originally posted by bobisbacktorock View PostI use Diesel / kerosene / Petrol to clean the chain. leech - I'm little worried to use gear oil/engine oil as lube. Some say its good. Some say it will kill my chain pretty soon.Last edited by chinmoyaj; 02-23-2017, 09:39 PM.

Re: Yamaha FZ16 version 2.0
chinmoyaj - no, gear oil is perfect for chains! It's petrol or diesel which is bad for chains, because they dissolve the internal grease of the chain.
I use gear oil for cleaning and lubing, and my CBR 250 chain is currently at 36020 kms. It will probably last 37k kms.
Gear oil is recommended by Hondas CBR manual. A lot of people use it on different vehicles.
