• Re: KTM RC 390 Ownership Experience

Today i faced a strange issue. I left my office, covered approx 50 kms and took a stop at a petrol pump to get fuel. I switched off the bike and when i turned it on, i saw warning msg- high coolant temperature. After that when i started riding, I noticed that i was unable to rev beyond 5000 rpm. I am unsure if there is some problem or this is a safety feature(not to let it rev beyond a certain rpm if the bike is very hot). And today was the hottest day in delhi as well. This is the second time i faced this issue.

After riding for a couple of kms, shutting the bike of and on, the problem disappeared. It was revving freely.

Strange.
Looks like ecu takes a bit time to learn overall situations on hitting high coolant temperature.
I have faced high coolant temperature warning once and it disappeared in 20-30 second and I remember I was harsh on accelerator at that time. Anyways watch out if it happens again.

i guess your bike went in to the 'limp' mode. ideally when you see an high coolant temp warning it is best to stop and rest it for a few minutes.
the limp mode is triggered due to certain conditions (which might harm the engine) and enables you to 'limp' back home/nearest service center in case of emergencies.

That is a proper oil leak. Usually there is a slight weep, but this clearly indicates excess leak, replace the head cover gasket.
Mail2vasant, you're right. The bike has an auto RPM limit that doesn't allow the bike to rev past certain RPM if the engine gets overheated as a protective measure. Resuming the ride after a couple of mins as you've done cools the engine, so the bike was all back to normal. Nothing to worry, it's a feature of the bike.

The High beam bulb (H9) is Rs 350 from the service center. Not sure about the low beam bulb.

Its the same for all RC 390's. High beam is H9 and Low beam is H11. The OEM might vary depending on your location.
BTW I am using H9 for the low beam as well after modifying it to fit in the H11 socket. It is much brighter than the H11 bulb.

The naked Duke comes with Osram OE German made bulbs.

For the RC going by the books it's

High Beam H11 Socket PGJ91-2 12/55V

The idea sounds great man. So did u face any issue so far like battery drainage or heat melt..anything.
Planning to do the same soon.
What changes does the socket requires to install a H9 bulb in the place of H11?

On Duke390, there is a single h4 type bulb. 55w low and 60w high. Standard convention. One bulb with 2 filaments.

RC has both 55w units single filament bulbs. Low beam is 55w single bulb and high beam is 2*55w beam.

unfortunately the book's aren't accurate. it does indeed have a 65w and a 55w bulb of different types (H9 and H11 types)
on low beam on bulb comes on, and on high both light up.
here are pics from a desi 2014 rc390, that should clarify the bulb types: (i doubt if it was changed later on)

The US and European RC's use 55w H11 bulbs for both High beam and Low beam but Bajaj has upgraded the High beam to 65w H9 for the Indian market alone.
The H9 produces 2100 lumen of light where as the H11 is rated at 1350 lumen. So the H9 is 50% brighter than the H11.

The socket does not need any changes but you have to do some DIY on the bulb itself to make it fit. I will take some pictures of the mod and post it over the weekend.
