Please suggest if as of now i can run the beast at high speeds or not.
If yes, then what should be the maximum speed i should run?

I'm also new to biking. I am planning to increase the speed and RPM level by level and change oil at each stage. My theory is that when you reach higher RPMs there will be a little more friction thereby contaminating the oil. Yes that means more money on oil, but I am fine with it as long as the bike is doing good.

For e.g. I rode my bike in less than 50kmph till 350km and almost always maintained RPM limit of 3-4k; changed the oil too at the end.
I am going to give my bike for the first service tomorrow and have clocked around 700km, and slowly I have increased the speed to 65kmph for the past couple of days with RPM shooting till 5k; and rarely 6k. Assuming that would result in some more metal elements in oil, that would be replaced in first service, so oil will be cleaner and would prevent engine damaging. Similarly, I will continue riding in and around 65kmph for the most part and will touch 80kmph towards the end of 1200km and will do an oil change. Similarly one final oil change at around 2000km with even higher speed. I have no idea whether this works fine, but it sounded logical to me, and so I'm doing it. I am not sure whether it makes sense to run your bike in 50kmph till 5000km. Your bike to know how to work well in all speeds more or less. Somebody who has good knowledge in bikes could be a better guide here.

The run-in period is till 2000 km, not 5000 km. Remember, it is not about the max speed but the max RPM you can go upto.

What I did was progressively open up the RPM range. First 1000 km --> till 3.5 K rpm
Next 500 km --> till 4 K RPM
Next 500 km --> till 5 K RPM.

Now my bike has completed about 2300 km and I go as high as 7k RPM.

It is fine to occasionally cross the RPM limit but do not redline the bike during run-in period. Stay away from sudden acceleration and make sure you DO NOT lug the engine.

I got the bike from Tambaram. They didn't even clean my bike on delivery. I went there a few times, but the way they treat bikes are pathetic. They literally man handle the bikes, that too in front of customers (of course not our bikes, but the other ones). So planning to give it at Adyar Jai Bajaj. I couldn't find any recommendations on this topic. So had to randomly pick another spot that's accessible to me.

I am new to biking too and Pulsar RS200 is my first bike. I am really confused about the run in period and i have the following queries:

1. I ride the bike at 2nd gear mainly because i live in a busy area, so is it okay or should i go higher gears i shift to 3rd gear whenever there is less traffic.
2. my friend took the bike for a ride and told me that he hit 135 km/hr, is it going to hurt my bike?
3. Can someone please explain the gear shifts along with rpm's, like at what gear should i go to 3k Rpm?

1. Try changing the gears once you hit 3.5 k RPM. This limit prescribed by Bajaj till first 1000 km.
2. Do not give your bike to such friends atleast in the run-in period. Whatever damage is done, is done. Avoid redlining in the run-in period. Usually such "freinds" don't give two hoots about the run-in of bike and try to test max speed/acceleration, both being bad for a new bike. Politely decline such requests. You have to live with your bike for next few years, not those "friends".
3. Shift once you reach 3.5 k RPM. Some people do it at 4k RPM as well, but I chose to stick with Bajaj recommendation. This limit can be increased progessively once you complete more kms on bike. Please refer to my above post for the procedure I followed.

1. Don't ever do that again, I mean giving your bike to anyone, any day. That's like giving the girl friend , sorry for saying so but it's that important
2. Don't test your bike's maximum potential at run-in, you will end of spoiling
3. Follow your manual and do at least 70% of what it says.

If you are not that keen in following the manual, simply use your RPM indicator and shift each gears post 3K RPM and can go upto 4.5K till your 1st service. After every successful 500KMs, increase your RPM shifting range to say ~500RPM. So at the end of 2000KMs, you will be shifting each gears around 4-5K RPM which on top gear results in speeds ~75kph which is not bad in my point of view.

Look the reasons why many of us are telling again and again about run-in is "BAJAJ SERVICE SUCKS". You end up with some problem, and 100% sure they can't and wont fix it, why?, shit because they sure don't know how to fix it.....!!! You will say your bike vibes, SVC says "That's common sir", you'll say your bike tappet clearance needs to be checked, they will reply "That's common sir"..... I've had enough with the Khivraj irresponsible service (Chennai)

So it's in your hand, happy driving

Congrats on your new bike mate,

1. Ride in whatever gear the bike speed is comfortable in, never over strain it unwantedly in a single gear and definitely never lug the engine in a higher gear with lower speed. These are rules to live by while riding.
2. Bike seeing triple digits a few time during run-in isn't going to kill the bike or harm it(C'mon guys, let's not be over dramatic here, don't scare the poor fella), although i would agree not to give your bike to people who do not handle it properly, most modern engines are robust enough to handle such abuse for a few times before it sustains damage.
3. Try shifting within the 4-5k rpm, it is the sweet spot for most bikes, the engine is pretty stress free at this point and you feel more comfortable riding it in this RPM band, decent power and decent mileage too.

You can have a look into the "Run-in" procedure post i have written, link is in my signature.

You are right. But I had to warn him because most of us when we get the bike, already it'd have been driven by some svc guys while bringing it from warehouse or doing TD, registration etc, because only few centers have a direct delivery from the loading. In my case the guy had to drive ~13 kms (inside city). Well, so we already are letting someone drive it with or without knowing. So next time onward, we have to be careful. Letting someone driving to experience the new bike is fine, I gave it to 2 of my friends, but within our company campus <300m. But he said his friend topped the speedo...
Your procedures were of much helpful, great...

Pre-purchase ,The best we can do is to insist very strongly that the bike is to be transported from stock yard to the showroom by you only, i have been doing that for most bikes i have owned. After assuming ownership handing over keys is always the choice of the owner, so nothing much to be said there.

Thanks for the kind words btw. Glad it helped.

Hi rachit sharma ,hows everything going with the bike ?? . I got into a mishap today ,signal was turning red (my speed was 20kmph) so i was slowing down to stop near the kalina (mohamadnagar junction) a bmw guy didnt want to slow down and miss the signal so he rammed my bike from behind . I fell down, luckily nothing happened . He was like ,i am sorry my driver thought you woudnt stop for red signal so he accidentally hit you(i was like wtf)(and he is saying dont worry ill give you paisa ,settle kar dunga ,i dont know why but when he said this ,i got very angry ,its like the guy thinks its a joke ram people and then say paisa de dunga) . After a heated discussion (mostly which was me shouting at the dude and his driver) public gathered and evr1 was like arey bmw vale ko bhar nikalo (crowd was almost ready to beat up the driver ) (since the accident happened near a junction with 4 police people and lots of shopkeepers i got a lot of support ) I got the dudes number and i think he will be paying for the damage (my mudguard broke ,again my gearshift got bent and little bit scratches here and there nothing major, maybe there might be minor wheel misalignment but i dont think i will ever come to know as there is no way to check ) and in those 10 minutes another accident happened same area ,similar circumstances . So if you are going there be careful at that junction really accident prone. (that biker dude got out and broke the window of the car guy in anger ...... ). totally i think the accident has cost me 1500 rs (rough estimate ) . In India you suffer when you follow the rules. On a side note remember accident caused due to rash driving is a cognizable and punishable offense section 279 (which means the guy can go to jail and you can file a FIR against the person and then proceed to court). (you can File FIR wherever you see fit ,like the police station near you or somewhere where you have influence). Lets see if the dude pays the money or not ,will keep you guys updated .

Hey Dragonprince! Long time!

Exactly same thing happened to me as well in Colaba. A dude on some scooty rammed into me from behind when I was stopping at signal. Same response! And that moron had a kid standing in front as well!

Now I ALWAYS give a hand signal while stopping at signals. As you mentioned, Kalina is pretty bad in terms of road sense. Even on LBS marg when I stop at red light, lot of morons start honking from behind. Thanks for the section 279 reference. I will read it, learn it and use it to terrorize any moron who troubles me like this on road

Thought traffic in Chennai is heavy, we do respect signals better I guess. In any case, when I get to know that I am more or less in the front, I always do hand signals. If still something bad happens, it is fate
