  • Today, i purchased Gulf Pride 4T Plus 20w 40 Oil for my GSR. Cost me 200 /-.
One cause of concern is that the Mfg Date on the Bottle is of September 2009. Hope that's not a Problem.
Am giving my Bike for Servicing on Wednesday. Lets see if the SVC Guys agree to switch to Gulf, else will get it done from Outside.
Also, purchased 4Litre Can of Shell Helix HX5 Oil for my Alto. Cost me 800 /-.
    Here are some Pics.

If it doesnt cause any extra wear and tear, clutchless upshifts are the way to go.. (i think its even smoother than the clutch shift !! )
Our transmission is one of the best so you can do up shifting without clutch, but if its not done at correct rpm it may not engage properly. So while shifting use a little clutch and definitely use clutch on downshifting. GS's transmission is constant mesh means all the gears are freewheeling, the gear is selected by moving a collar which stops the free wheeling of the selected gear. On slowing down there will be a mismatch of the speed in rotation of transmission and engine so, its better to use clutch on downshifting.

I just checked the wheels after a ride of 20 minutes, it was warm but not hot as silencer. Guys please comment on this issue.

Yeah I too faced the same problem, on oil change cold starts was a little problem. But its only natural, new oil is thick compared to old one(same grade) and offer more resistance than thin old oil. In a week time the oil will settle and this problem will reduce.

@ falcon: till now I was with millers road suzuki; nxt time before service I will distrub you coz I decided to go with airport road for next service which is due on 2nd september 2010 and you know almost all svc ppl there.
im using 5w 40 still im having some cold start issues. but i believe it is because of adulterated petrol but still i believe having lower grade means it will avoid wear of engine during cold start; does it meant it will not have cold start prob ? please clarify

oils wont have expiry date. but oil less than 4 years is still good. no need to worry. i believe they have shelf life about 4 years.

        • @thefalcon to be true clutchless shift are very good for the plates and fuel efficiency. This is very good you are trying i am used to using clutch less upshifts no issue for me till now. I am able to shift easily at 3k or less without any issues and without clutch use but shift at 4k RPM it is perfect you will get used to it soon.

I asked about this when i had honda eterno to a SVC

Edit: is Gulf4T Mineral Oil or Semi Synth? is there any Mineral oil available in AGIP in 20w40?

gulf is semi...ya.. its there... but that is not imported from italy. it is manufactured here by apar industries or something.

As everyone feels, It is very much true that the engine feels rough when heated. I know that it is because the oil becomes less viscus when heated...
But i have ridden other bikes, have got a honda shine, had a yamaha ybx... But in those bikes i couldn't feel anything like this

Maybe suzuki them-self should suggest a better oil...
The roughness is really irritating me
Btw lets create a poll and vote for the best oil...

              • WoW !!!

Hey buddies was just going through the posts i left off since last week and
                WW !!!
Not sure but I do find the amount of technical knowledge and interactions happening on this GS forum is a quality above normal ...since the very beginning

Hats off to all the GS dudes and others for making it so cool
And MACH50 ur really informative man

Nway just to add up the common 'concerns':

                1. Even I do have the same spinning rear wheel on clutch engaged in Gear.
Will not cause any damage as the torque is almost nil ...me thinks its the oil in between clutch & flywheel causing that slow frictional rotation....
If Suzka sees it like that...so let it be

                2. Any alloy wheel would heat up on driving...as long as its not burning hot and the tyre pressure is not Low

                3. @Maestro After service just a slight pressure on clutch lever is enough to start the bike...and sometimes not start on fully depressed

                4. The engine sometimes seems slightly rough or in a bad mood and next day viola...as active as a puppy...baby rocket elephant is more precise

Its great to have a bike having some character...not to mention my Nova 115...9th one produced by Kinetic...(had real issues from day 1...sometimes its in coma and sometimes its raring to touch 75 and do drag ...9 yrs and still surviving in Kerala. Miss it badly )

If you were to draw a time line from the day this forum was started :

to this day and check out the topics discussed and concerns exchanged...its a hella lot of stuff

Keep it up buddies & enjoy the ride, GS style

You seem to know about this issue, any idea why its heating up ? I checked the temp of alloys for last two days, it was warm but not that hot as mentioned by Arun. A friend of mine drives with his feet on the brake lever all the time and the brake light will be lit full time. The heating may also because of habit of using rear brakes often.

After service just a slight pressure on clutch lever is enough to start the bike...and sometimes not start on fully depressed
I was wondering the same, if depressed more than half motor wont start. Its easier(safer) to depress the clutch as whole than some value, any idea how to adjust it?

Thanks Amitine happy to be of use......at least my passion turns out to be creative

Okay tested a true top speed of the Suzuki GSR today.
The top speed reached by riding normally at 8100rpms in 6th gear was around 117kmph to 119kmph,without crouch and without using any streamline drag as I was wearing a motocross helmet.Speed is reported by my R15 and RTR180 fellow xbhpians, when I gave them a pass during a small morning race.

Conducted a small G2G in my city.We rode together in groups and then rode out for a 50 miles race in a sparsely populated three lane highway.I didnt rev my engine till redline today, also didnt possessed the Speed petroleum that I use during long distance rides....so the engine wasnt forced to redline.Just registered the normal top speed.
Thats right GSR's normal top speed in power mode is similar to Pulsar 180 Dtsi.
Pick up was like the RTR180 who recorded the 0-60kmph in 4.8secs on its console,My GSR in power mode had its nose ahead by a margin side by side.

So whats a GSR in power mode : stock Karizma's acceleration and stock P180's top speed.
GSR in eco mode-Hero Honda Achiever.
GSR in normal mode- A smooth and precise 150cc like a Honda Unicorn.

GSR is a true Suzuki afterall

A picture of my Xbhp group, bikers and riders lined up

As you can see,the last bike here is the P220,infront of it RTR180,infront of it my beloved GSR which is behind the R15,then as it goes forward....Karizma,R15,RTR160,RTR160Fi,Hunk,P180UG 3.

Thats our Kolkata Xbhpians group and my lone but potent GSR in it.

                    Another shot :

For my baleno i use castrol magnetech is it ok????? cost Rs 2000 for 3 litre

                          • mileage

                            Hi Guys,

From past couple of days i am get mileage exact 50

I used shell unleaded as heard it improves the mileage it gave me 58 !!!! wow 8extra kmpl?? thts too much... wat i was thinking is already 3.5 ltr of fuel is thr so does shell petrol mixed with it or there are different compartments for "ON" fuel and "reserve" fuel position, if not what if i drain fuel tank and fill all shell will i get mileage > 58???

So for 100 rs for any fuel(after hike) i get 85.xxkm but with shell i got 97.XX so I would rather go for shell, did some body mentioned we should avoid shell petrol, there was some discussion about some additives not good for engine .. any body remembers??

BTW i have an extra 1L Shell Advance S lying around let me know if any body interested bought it for 190 bucks but SC guys already changed oil due to some confusion.

I was also confused. Nowhere on the bottle it says semi. I googled it and saw few comments on various sites which say its semi. The gulf site was also not helpful. I guess only way to find out is by emailing gulf. Could someone please do it. I am accessing net from a cell and therefore the email application on the gulf site does not open. Raj

                              • Hi, could you all try this experiment..
While riding your bike normally with fuel valve in on or res position, just turn the knob off. and measure how much distance you can go till bike stops..
(do this after your bike is turned on, otherwise the petrol reqd to turn on the bike will spoil the calculation)
Supposedly fz16 has same carb and yamaha SC told my friend carb contains 30ml petrol..
So the mileage would be 33.33*(distance)..(for fz's case)

I tried it out but could go only 1km, mileage 33.33 (according to above calculation)
Post your results here with the mileage you last calculated with normal methods..
