  • My GS 150 Clocked 38,000. Pretty Satisfactory. Consistent 50 KMPL. Only sore point is the rear brake. Useless. High Speed Braking is not inspiring with only the front brake. Recently collided with a Idiot TVS Moped @ 90 KMPH. The Plastic next to the Headlight came off. Damage Rs.1,650/-, Front Mudguard clamp broke - Cost Rs.1,800. Plastics are very delicate cum very expensive to replace.

Other than these minor issues, the Bike is mechanically fit. The front brake pad costs only Rs.250/- and lasted for 28,000 KMS. The rear brake pad was changed @ 30,000 KMS. The Chain was replaced @ 28,000 KMS. Regular servicing costs @ 800 - 1000 (inlcuding oil with Engine Oil Treatment). Still running on Original Tyres (Front and Rear). Planning to replace the rear tyre in first week of May 2011.

My Dealer Dr.Rajkumar Suzuki has introduced AMC. Costs Rs.1,000/- Valid for One year and Four Services.. Service Cost of Rs.300/- will be waived off. You get 5% discount on certain spare parts and 10% discount on other labour services.

It's hightime that Suzuki introduced Rear Disc Brake as option on such a Wonderful Bike. (should happen by 2015) - Lazy Suzuki

    • my cents

went to SC on thursday, told them to ride the bike and experience shifting problem....the mechanic who has assembled my bike's engine was told to ride it. he rode my bike and told me there is absolutely no problem with gears and i feel shifts hard 'cos i use toeshifter for upshifting
anyways SC supervisor has told me to leave bike with them for a couple of days as they would like to inspect and check if there's really a problem.though they are telling me that I/P shaft and bearings and gears have been changed...I have strong doubt about it, because nothing feels different while shifting gears. Also there is whinning noise in 6th gear post 4500 rpm. I am going to leave my bike with them on monday..and if it's not OK after that also then I will ask for a refund.
      @Vishnu: my thoughts in bold.

The mechanic at SC thinks i donno anything in bikes, n he never uses toe for upshifting, even when i insisted him to do it he said it's not the right way of shifting n you are telling me to ask him to do certain things!!!
let me tell you what are my guesses:
      1. transmission shaft/s not proper/ damaged.
      2. shaft end bearings malfunction (it used to slip before i gave it for engine related work last time)
      3. faulty machining of parts/ engine casing itself. what i mean here is if the bearing retaining hole/ groove is machined beyond set limit, even in microns it'll cause bearing to slip as engine gets hot.
      4. damaged dog teeth on gears, but then gears are hardened to take all that load isn't it!
      5. 6th gear noise..i feel from my experience with discover gears, that there may be pitting on gear teeth causing a play between gears n hence the noise.
@all: Guys correct me if i'm wrong somewhere and please add stuff you know.

I have one doubt: how is the crankshaft, block piston and cylinder head related to the difficulty in gear shifting?
These things are not related to gear shifting and i've never said they are, but they have changed cyl bore, n i think crankshaft, bearings, balancer n....stuff they don't want to tell me. they changed these parts since my bike was making grinding noise, there was pickup as if it's a 100cc bike, efficiency was very poor.
What i can see after service is better pickup, efficiency exceeding 45kmpl.
i do not get the pickup i used to get when engine was new. that smoothness in engine has gone, now it even vibrates at idle. I feel that carb has been tuned too lean as i'm getting this mileage even after riding in afternoon heat and there is lack of power if i try to revv hard suddenly. i mean the engine just revvs but there is no power

The best thing you can do is demanding the refund of the cost of the bike. There is no need to approach the court. Ask Suzuki to refund the money. They will do it; I am sure.
Asking for a replacement of the bike is not a good suggestion as the adverse experiences with this bike may haunt you for years even when you use a new GS.
I wonder how all the engine and gear problems which cannot be rectified accumulated in one or two bikes among the thousands sold in the market. This doubt is because almost all other GS owners are satisfied with the performance of their bikes.
I bought this bike after test riding at four different show rooms at different times of the day. all of them had smooth gears, better pickup and smooth engine. problems in every machine can be rectified...I and my mechanic friend made my second hand discover from a dull bike to a shining beauty. I regret selling it to buy this machine from Suzuki. mechanically that bike was perfectly OK. It was all trial and error to make it run like a gem. but we learned a lot while doing it. That is the reason I think of so many possible reasons when it comes to shifting, power, mileage issues.

All your comments and inputs are welcome.
      sorry for a long post.

I do keep my foot on the rear brake but the heating seems to happen even when I don't do that. I'd thought that it is better to have my foot on the pedal at most times as my tendency is to go for the front break otherwise.

Is there any way to lower the brake pedal? The way it currently is I have to keep my foot tensed over it and that gets uncomfortable after a while, not to mention inadvertently pressing down on it as you mentioned.

            1. a bus guy decided he like my bike and came and kissed it. with his bus!!!! got a scratch on the silencer. dont know if there is a dent yet as it was too hot to touch. it was a light contact but there are scratches. will it make trouble in the future.

            2. i dont know if its my fault or what but the accelerator is not smooth. it kind off jerks and there is a metallic sound that comes everytime i close and open the throttle. however smoothly i try to do it.

            3. the is a 'squeek squeek' sound coming from back suspension when driving over potholes or even when i sit on bike and go up and down.

            7. fuel bar is weird. when i start there is 2 bars. after riding for 5 mins it goes to 3 and maintains that till i stop. then it comes back to 2.

many of these issues were faced by all i suppose so am not worried that much. just sharing my experience with ya'all. PEACE!!!
            1. The scratches will not make any trouble in the future. If it is damaged fully or partially, try to get an insurance claim.
            2. This sound is from the knob of the small drum to which the accelerator cable is connected hitting the throttle stop screw. There is no way to stop this sound.
            3. It is because the back suspension is new. It will be OK after a few more kms.
            7. True. But it is a common in every bike; whether GS or any other.
            PEACE? WHERE?

None of the other parts except the exhaust gets as hot and I am worried that if the heat gets to the tyres on a longer ride it could damage them.

Also, I noticed that the fuel indicator shows 1 bar even when the engine stops and I have to put it in reserve... is that normal?

Any advice on this would be appreciated

If your neighbour is sure about the faulty bearing, ask him to tell which one it is. This kind of opinions, even innocent, spoils your peace of mind. Ignore it.
The fuel indicator does not show the accurate amount of fuel in the tank. This is normal. There is no need to go to the service centre for any kind of checking up of the bike. All the best.

Now it is sure that the heat is from the engine. It is common in every bike and is harmless and there is no need to worry about it. Just ignore it.
It is better to keep the foot on the pedal itself. You can lower the brake pedal but I think the tension of the foot is because you are a new rider. Wait for a few more kms before trying to lower the pedal.

                  • It had been a really long time, since I had added something worthy to this thread.I knew that this forum attracted posts from gentlemen with far more concern for minute details and someone rash and inconsiderate like myself isn't worth being here. But now, since I have been mentioned in the posts I feel I must speak something.

I had previously own a fleet of bikes, thanks to my enthusiastic Dad........but GS150R is the bike which I bought with my own hard-earned first savings of my life in exchange for the Suzuki Zeus which I bought too in order to get myself back to biking after I left it 2yrs ago for being in two back to back high speed crashes on a Pulsar 180DTSi and then on Suzuki Fiero.

I have ridden every kind of bikes since I started my love for two-wheelers since 8th standard of my education.
Multicylinders,Single cylinders,Scooters,Mopeds,two-strokes,four strokes, electric bikes,50cc to 1300cc sometime or the other from all manufacturers, most of them are my friends's bike and some of them mine own.

Hundreds and thousands of issues, some are like you cannot use regular fuel sold in India on certain bikes and some others are like handle coming out of clip-on systems at high speeds, some are even life taking.

So it is very odd to comment that I (in particular), do not feel any pain of ownership !!! There is absolutely no bike on earth which is entirely trouble free and does not challenges the attitude of ownership.

Whenever my friends ask me how I did the run-in on my GS150R..........I answer them, by completing 500kms in 4.5 hrs. This forum is a testimony to that as it contains pictures and words about a fact that a 9500kms odd Hero Honda Hunk failed to keep up with a 120kms old Suzuki GS150R while going flat out on highway.Yet I still own a trouble free bike !!!!

On the other day on a city freeway, I pulled a 90kmph in 3rd gear and shifted gear without clutch at redline while overtaking a speeding Hyundai i20.Yet my gearshift is better than a silky shifting Unicorn, my friend a owner of Unicorn confirmed it !!!!

When I hit the highway in a group, the cruising speeds generally averages around 100kmph all the time. Yet,I am the biker who spends the least money for buying fuel as my bike still registers 52kmpl on such highway hits too !!!!

So I do own a trouble free bike and proudly.

But is it really that different from all its brothers assembled at the same factory line ?????
If someone has been following me through this forum since I bought my GS150R........(that would be somewhere around page number 524 of this thread), he/she would easily find out that I too had issues, but my love and understanding for the bike out witted those issues to nil.

But just a recap in case it went unnoticed,
Well how would it feel to ride a new bike home,30 kms away from the showroom and that too on a monsoon drenched night with knee deep water clogged streets everywhere ????? What kind of showroom delivers a new bike at 9:00 pm on a Saturday night ????
But I stayed cool and kept the staff waiting as I won't have moved an inch that day without my bike and rode her out to my home despite the weather. When I came home,my neighbours pulled my leg saying that I bought a new boat and not a bike.

And how would it feel if the chain cover comes off making a huge rattling sound amidst a huge traffic at peak hours in the city ???? and that too only 4 days after purchase ???? Is it a manufacturing defect ??? Yes it is !!! Rather an assembling defect.
But I rode her to SVC amid all embarrassment (that even dogs barked at me due to the sound) to get it checked and corrected despite being late to get on with my routine for that day.Not another day has that chain cover troubled me again,I made sure of that.

Also how would it feel if a damn sqeaking noise keeps getting the attention on a new bike,a week after purchase ????
The SVC guys told that they were sorry to deliver the bike that late at night and without oiling or greasing the new parts and the monsoons did not help it.Just an oiling of the swingarm that day did away with the trouble of sqeak-sqeak forever.

I must admit that it felt very bad when I found that the gear-shift on my bike is toe breaking when it was 850 kms old.Did I not get upset to find it such, even when the reputed bike magazines has reported the gearshift to be super smooth,at par with Unicorn ??? Did I not feel that it too might be another manufacturing defect ????
But I never doubted my bike and Suzuki for a single moment........and I did seek an advice about it on this forum here. But ironically it was not the Suzuki whom I approached to change my bike and neither was the issue solved by them.It was rather a local mechanic chacha who solved the problem by doing some adjustments to clutch settings on finding my gearshift hard.Since then the kind of gearshift that I enjoy on my bike is mentioned above.

There had been runs on which my fellow highway riders felt the need to ease off as their bikes felt stressed out being cruising near redline and felt engines overheat. But what they found hard to believe that my bike still felt as relaxed as it came out of the garage. It cools down without complain........despite the fact that the Cat-con still keeps ticking(famous tick-tick sound ) even after the bike is 6500kms old.Well it feels great when the bike does not seems to age even after kilometers of high speed and hard acceleration, everyday I take out,it feels new.The tick-tick sound reminds me of the fact that the cat-son still expands and shrinks like that of a brand new bike and I smile to myself.

I find so many people worried about coverage under warranty..........well I challenged warranty for using an engine oil which was not gifted by the SVC.
The SVC told that they would observe my bike for issues over two services for consequence of not using the company supplied engine-oil.
Needless to say I won the challenge and my bike has been gifted back its warranty when no issues were observed. The SVC now themselves use the engine oil I use instead of the company supplied engine oil.

Sometime ago,I too started complaining about rear-braking and I still believe it is has been set on a weaker tune.So is it not good at braking at all ???
My inhibitions were shattered by a mechanic friend of mine who rode my GS150R recklessly in a crowdy bazaar with myself as pillion.Speeding down as accurately as possible while speeding up as abruptly in such a crowded place. When I asked him how he did it on such bad brakes.....he said,"riding is all about how you control the machine and not how dependent you should be on the machine, your braking technique is far inferior to mine" I was so shocked by his reply, that I started observing how he braked.....I learnt it soon and with added practice i found the braking set-up on GS150R are next to ABS.I have ridden Pulsars and RTRs too but none felt so confident inspiring under hard braking.

The latest issue being a spark-plug adapter/spark plug cap which is faulty on GS150Rs because it tends to black out under hard acceleration.
Installed Splitfire powercable.......hope to do a top end Sunday ride to confirm everything is ok now.The bike is already taking hard revs in lower gears easily without losing power as it was on the faulty sparkplug adapter. Now need to confirm this in higher gears.

So, if so much is common with every other GS150R here then why I don't complain ??? why I don't feel the pain ????
Yet it is my GS150R which got its front wheels up in the air, perhaps for the first time in this thread and it has been recorded and posted here as a video.
Yet it is the same bike which did 122 kmph on a busy city transit and clocked 129kmph and has been recorded and posted here as a video featuring break neck speeds and hard braking.

Many people comes to me on seeing my bike and enquiring about it after witnessing its performance first hand. After knowing that there is no direct dealer in my city and that SVC of the sub-dealer(they sell and service all brands of bike-bajaj,yamaha,honda,tvs,mahindra,hero honda...all)too is 30kms away in the downtown region, they ask why I bought this bike ????

I reply, after owning legends like Suzuki Shogun(peak power 8500rpms,peak torque8250rpm),Suzuki Fiero(the champ of TVS racing, father of RTRs)
                    I believe:
It takes guts to own a Suzuki.

Those who likes my reply, goes for a GS150R.........others keep waiting for Honda to deliver their CB Unicorn.

Yes i do feel that toe shifting is harder than heel.
and about the refund i doubt that they will give u any at the most they will replace it with another GS, because refunding leaves them with ZERO profit as simple as that.
after reading through this forum and seeing some real life situations i feel that the gs has a set of problems which is common for almost all GS and gets resolved with time like:
                          1. Hard shifts in the begining
                          2. Engine heating
                          3. Rust in some cases
                          4. Kind of faulty petrol indicator (which is their in all bikes with digital indicators)
                          5. Head lights (which becomes better after tuning)
                          6. The clutch cable goes kaput after 8k kms (4 incidents with similar odo )

I have to say MACH50 this one is the best post by you in this forum! I own Yamaha SZ-R, but I am a huge fan of this beast, I did not go for this bike for financial reasons and the weight for me is a bit scary.

Hats off to your long post! What I learned from you post is trust your machine, be it manufactured by any company. Love it, take care of it, and IT WILL return the best, under all the circumstances.

It is better to keep the foot on the pedal itself. You can lower the brake pedal but I think the tension of the foot is because you are a new rider. Wait for a few more kms before trying to lower the pedal.
I lowered the brake pedal a bit after refering to the manual. I also noticed that the brake lining wear limit is showing a bit above the range(as opposed to below range as shown in fig. B, 6-39 of the manual). Is that something that could be causing the heating?
