  • Re: TVS Apache RTR 200 4V Ownership Experience

It has been about 2 months and ~1600 kms with my beast now and Im absolutely loving it!! [emoji7][emoji7]
The ride has been almost niggle free apart from few small issues here and there.

The first one is with the Gear position indicator. It sometimes show 2nd gear even though it is in Neutral. This seems to be a known issue with the bike, is it? Probably the sensor needs replacement. Because I had mentioned this during the first service and it still persists.

Also, I seem to have an issue with the fuel gauge. As per the manual, when the low fuel light starts blinking the tank should have about 1.8 litres of fuel and once it stops blinking and flashes continuously it should still have 1.1 litres of fuel. But today in the morning, about 40kms after it started blinking and started flashing continuously, the engine ceased. Fortunately I was close to a fuel station and got it toped up. Has anyone else faced this issue?
Also the CHECK FUEL SENSOR warning comes up whenever I fill the tank fully. It stays for few kms till the fuel level drops a bit.

It also seems to have some vibrations between 3 and 4k RPM. This is felt on footpegs mainly and when Im on higher gears like 4th or 5th gears. Is this a normal behaviour of the engine? The vibration isnt strong enough to bother me though!! It is just that when the engine is so smooth and refined, you can feel even a small amount of vibration!! [emoji16]

Will have to get these checked during the 2nd service..

Gear Indicator sensor is a known problem and cannot be rectified 100%. Even if you change the sensor it will come back after few days. Instead of changing the sensor everytime tell the service center guys to polish off the surface of the sensor and refit the same. atleast you can use it for long. I changed my bike sensor about 6-8 months back and have polished it twice. So whenever i go for servicing i tell them for polish the same with sand paper and refit the same and then it works properly. Also you get used to the same after sometimes.

These electronic fuel gauges are always vulnerable, so better keep in mind that once it comes to reserve means you have to fill the petrol as soon as possible. Think that reserve means zero fuel and you have to fill the same at the first available petrol pump or your nearest known petrol pump.

Use of better oil can control the vibration to some extend.

Hey wanted some help. Is anybody facing Engine oil depleting problem? I have checked for oil leakage or smoke but nothing as such. This have happened second time to me. Serviced my bike 1 month back and changed the engine oil in front of me. But still the engine oil i checked on 21st was less so bought the engine oil bottle and started topping it up. However after filling 800-900ml i got the proper level which is required. Even last time i had to fill 1 full litre of oil for topping it. I was like WTF is happening to the bike.
Even if the oil is less there is no roughness in the bike. But then i am concerned because my everyday ride is 25kms+ one way and on highway. If the oil is less then it might cease my bike and ruin the engine. Have been using TVS synthetic or Motul 7100.
I have only noticed white smoke once in 3-4 days that also only in the morning when i first start the bike. There are no other oil trace marks anywhere.

What can i check more? No average difference still getting about 35-36 KMPL. Easily goes about 100-110 kmph speed.
My run in the month is about 1000-1200 kms.

Has anyone tried engine oil from Liqui Moly on Apache RTR 200?

If yes can you tell me what oil is recommended/most VFM?

Ive read that the oil change periods for LiquiMoly are also longer. Is that true?

First of all, Thank you for replying!!

Alright, Will tell them next time when I visit the svc..

I can understand about the issue with the low fuel warning. What could the reason behind the CHECK FUEL SENSOR warning whenever I topup the tank?? It comes up after a ride for a few minutes after filling. When I checked the manual, I found that the tank has some sort of a neck near the inlet and it is not recommended to fill above that level. I think i filled the fuel above that level which submerges that neck.
            Could this be the reason?

Also the wheels aren't rotating freely while coasting. Can hear some small noise from somewhere!! Need to check where the sound is coming from and localise the source of the sound.

Did you find source of the oil level dropping issue that you are facing?
Although, I do not have much mechanical knowledge I googled a bit and some articles indicate that it could be the internal components or the valve seal.
Since it is a fairly new engine, it couldn't be any internal components is it??
Anyway lets hope its nothing serious!!!

I read a few of your other posts in this thread. Would you recommend the dealer after your purchase? It looks like you had a few issues with them, but I'm planning to visit them soon (Goregaon SV Road) for a test ride.

I am yet to buy this bike, but I think the rear tyre 130mm is a bit narrow. Can the rear tyre be changed to thicker 140mm one? Will the whole alloys need to be changed, and will the ABS work if this modification is made?

The 130/70 rear tyre is perfect. 140/60 may have issues due to the low profile but there are people using 140/70.

While using 140/70 tyre in the place of 130/70 tyre, there will be around 3% change in the wheel diameter. So the rear wheel will be spinning 3% slower than the ABS calibration. ABS may consider it as slipping rear wheel while braking and kick in early, thus reducing the effectiveness of the rear brake. I'm not sure of this but there is a possibility. It all depends on how the ABS is calibrated and deals with wheel slip.

Thanks. So only the tyre change is enough, but no need of alloy wheel rim change? Im ok with slight underperformance of ABS, as locking means speed has to become zero itself.

The rim size is 3.5'. 140 tyres usually use 4' but you can use them in 3.5' rims. There is no need to change rims.

For ABS, afaik speed needn't be zero. It will kick in when the the wheel speeds don't match.

But remember, the speedo is linked to the rear wheel (transmission countershaft) and hence a tyre size change will introduce slight inaccuracies. The acceleration will also take a slight hit.

Edit: The ABS may work perfectly it seems. One can say for sure only after someone does it practically. [MENTION=90166]smutall[/MENTION]

Thanks. I searched for rim size to compatible tyre sizes. Found that 140/70 will fit on the 3.5 inch rim of this bike.

Edit: Single channel ABS works without comparing the speed of both wheels, so it should mostly work.

My overall experience was good. What I highlighted earlier was a case of overcommitment by one salesperson. You cannot judge the whole dealership based on that. Mr Sunil, who is the manager there, is very scrupulous about any commitments he makes. I complained to him about this particular incident and was assigned a different point of contact with whom I had a good experience. I am yet to experience the after-sales service. So, I cannot comment on that.

Recommend to not let the FI run dry. It's a costly thing to replace if the pump goes bad. Fill up within few kms once the flashing starts. Making a habit of it helps.

It took about 15-20 days for delivery. I booked on the 15th of December if I recall correctly and got the delivery on the 2nd of January. I chose the black and red color with ABS option.

Seeing as you are a prospective buyer, i will tell you a few things about the bike. You might know the good things already. So i will skip that part. The bike is good overall. The exhaust note will get you a lot of attention.

Now for the problems. It has serious cold start issues. And not only in the morning. Even if you try to start it after about eight hours, it refuses to start unless you use the choke. It becomes embarrassing sometimes [emoji23]. I noticed a small tinny sound coming from the exhaust heat shield recently. But it seems to be a fitting problem since my heat shield is aligned differently from other bikes. I checked with another Apache.
