  • Re: Bajaj Dominar 400 Ownership Experience Thread

    Hi All

I purchased a Dominar ABS somewhere around February (got it delivered) and i have been reading almost every single post here on this thread from the beginning of this thread. I would like to thank everyone here who put forward his or her thoughts and also the many youtube videos which helped me with my decision. And i dont regret it one bit. I will share my experiences here and hopefully someone will find them useful or relate to it.

Coming to the bike itself, i would like to list the pros and cons of it.
    Pros :
I love almost everything about the bike. Quality of the paint, the aluminum bits and pieces, and also the quality of plastics used across the bike is of a very high standard.
A lot of fun to drive, excellent front brakes (coming from a tiny Bajaj Boxer) and pleasing engine note. Absolutely love the ABS. Rear brakes are spongy and kinda deadwood and seem to exist to provide supplementary stopping power to the front. Which is how it should be i believe. I use the rear within city limits with some front braking, and on open roads i use the front with a bit of the rear for additional stopping duties.
I have done around 1500 km on it, and the bike just keeps getting smoother. I used to be one who complained about the jerks at low speeds, but i have adjusted my driving style and now i dont have any problems whatsoever with this. Seems like the issue was inside my head having adjusted to a 100cc commuter bike. So i dont think iam going to insist of ECU updates.
    Cons :
Weight - Getting used to it, but its really heavy when parking, and iam quite sure almost all dominar owners will drop the bike at least 5 times in their lifetime of owning it.
Turning radius is low compared to other commuter bikes. Getting used to it also.
Gears seems to have gotten a bit sticky, need to find the right rpm to engage or disengage. Downshifts are a bit rough sometimes. But at the right speeds, upshifts are a lot of fun. And yes, first gear engages with a loud thud.
The silver paint on the wheel stalks is peeling off.

    Other observations :
The vibrations in the 4 - 4.5k rpm range is not annoying at all , and i have some minor tingling in the seats, but none on my footrests or handlebars.
The rpm seems stuck at 4000 and a speed of 73 kmph when the bike was new, and i thought it was some sort of limiter, but this goes away on its own in a few weeks of driving. Seems like the engine being brand new is too stressed beyond this point, though the 73km/hr speed is strange. User Harideep here also reported the same issue, which is also one of the reasons iam finally posting here.

Once again, thank you all for your tips and suggestions here, buying the Dominar has been one of the best purchase decisions ever made in my entire life. And i dont just mean motorcycles.
    Thanks for reading!

Sometime back an owner called up Bajaj customer support and they sent a tech over who rode with the owner and went over reported issues.
I suggest you go the and route, call up tech support. Such things should be addressed. You have paid good money for a premium product, you should expect satisfactory resolution . Fight for your rights!

BTW i got the 116 update. Bike feels more grunty in lower gears. Any opinions?
Oh and almost forgot. I got the sc to exactly align rear tyre with the chain adjustment marks. Earlier after sevice one side had offset of one. Now the wobble at 75kmph is gone! I still had some convincing to do before the tech addressed the issues. Instead of having confidence in their product that it should not wobble at 75, they tend to get defensive. But anyways problem solved.

Most bigger capacity bikes have this clunk / thud while shifting to first from a standstill. My previous Ninja 650 had the same thing... it's normal. and as far as silver paint on wheel stalks peeling off, I don't understand what you mean. The silver on the alloy wheel spokes, is machined not paint. and congratulations on your new bike. I've done a similar amount of kms on mine and totally like it. Only need to get adjusted to the gear change speeds

Flush is not necessary. This is a new bike. If it were very old with no oil change for a long long time, then you can consider flush to take care of sludge.
Remember, as long as oil label says motorcycle and 4 stroke and similar grade they can be mixed without issues. Hint : how do you think we get semi synthetic and synthetic blends.
For e. g you can mix Total 15w-50 with. Motul 20W-50.
Just make sure you check the level. Cheers.

Yes bro, the side sensor cable had snapped: the bolt fixing the stand had pressed the cable and had been reason the failure. The dealer had it replaced with the one from new bike as the replacement process would be taking time. Now our friend is happy.

[QUOTE=deepDmnr;1309384]Is it the toolkit in there, is it secure. Also check if the battery is secured.
I hear something that sounds like the petrol tank plastic but that is only for when i am not careful going over potholes.
A bullet fares much better with its spoked wheels. My friend hardly gets bothered by uneven surface.
On good surface, is a different story and i works rather be on the dominar.
Get the gear play adjusted for that clunky sound. Every dominar has it. It's reduced a great deal from before.
Not sure if it's a good idea but i leave the bike in neutral only for cold start.
In case of traffic stops, i start bike with clutch depressed in first gear so no knocking sound

gave the bike to service centre after calling tech support and they also nited there were vibration on petrol tank side so that also will be taken care offf
and also there are many scratches on my odo display can anyone tell any remedy of it 😬

I was thinking of using screen protector cut to size but have not done so. Let me know if you have a better idea.

Does anyone know the purpose of the switch under the clutch lever?

I try to install an adjustable lever and found a switch. Not sure of its purpose.

                            Thanks.

It is for the side stand sensor and to prevent bike from starting while in gear. It the cable is pulled you can not start the bike in gear by pulling in the clutch.
