For those rider's who are getting a mileage of 30+kmpl how are you guys riding the bike keeping the revs under 4k or simply accelerating gradually untill vibes go away? i have not calculated my mileage yet - 450kms on ODO even after driving sanely and keeping the bike under 4k rpm it took 2 full tanks to acheive 450kms on ODO, hoping the mileage should improve after 1st service. ...my oil seems to be on the right level although the coolant level has juz dropped at 450km mark , its just below the min mark...and strangely my service icon is active on the tacho which should ideally come at 500kms is this alarming ??? what should i do wait till 500kms or take the bike to the SVC rightaway???

Service Icon comes up at 450 KMs as a reminder. Service interval is between 500 and 750 KMs. Check 1st service date limit as well. Whichever comes early.Originally posted by SoUL_Rider View PostFor those rider's who are getting a mileage of 30+kmpl how are you guys riding the bike keeping the revs under 4k or simply accelerating gradually untill vibes go away? i have not calculated my mileage yet - 450kms on ODO even after driving sanely and keeping the bike under 4k rpm it took 2 full tanks to acheive 450kms on ODO, hoping the mileage should improve after 1st service. ...my oil seems to be on the right level although the coolant level has juz dropped at 450km mark , its just below the min mark...and strangely my service icon is active on the tacho which should ideally come at 500kms is this alarming ??? what should i do wait till 500kms or take the bike to the SVC rightaway???
Try to make gradual acceleration and limit the RPM. The running-in speed limit (for each gear) mentioned in the manual is a bit on the lower side. Try be close the limit specified. Check the mileage after running 100-150 KMs on a full tank. I did not notice any significant difference in mileage after the service. Don't get too hung over the mileage figures. It depends on many factors. Enjoy your ride.
Regarding the low coolant and oil levels. Since you are anyways close to the 1st service, you may take your bike to the service center.
Happy Riding.

I accelerate slower than I used to do it my Pulsar 150, gradually increasing speed and keeping revs below 4.5k rpm.. Gear changes at 4k rpm so that there's no lugging.. Rarely do I use my bike's potential.. This makes sure my mileage is 32kmpl + consistently..
This riding style is my daily riding style wherein I ride 7kms to office via ring road with 2 signals..
On highway, 80-90kmph or 4k-5k rpm is what I maintain usually, unless the road is really good or I feel like riding hard, I go upto 120kmph, never crossed that though..

I haven't received the manual yet , although i have been able to extract good mileage figures from any bike I've ridden till date thanks to my riding style, but m confused with this baby whether to ride hard enough to utilize its potential completely or to keeps the revs to a minimum to keep the it cool and mileage friendly ....i m not trying to be adamant to get good mileage i understand it a big bike and has a big appetite its just that many riders here have posted some unrealistic figures which are worrying meOriginally posted by I Ride Alone View PostService Icon comes up at 450 KMs as a reminder. Also the fuel gauge is pathetic every bajaj bike has the same issue. couple of days back i was on the last bar but wen i opened the fuel cap i could see half a tank fuel and could only top it upto 7.8 ltrs.
other than this issue the bike is simple amazing... love riding it to work , absolute head turner
and pretty darn comfortable.

That's exactly even i rode till now and still riding the same only once or twice i topped 100km and soon as i did that i lost two bars which forced me to start riding under 4k again. hoping for some improvement after service the bike has become a bit sluggish than in the initial 100-200kms will take it to the SVC today itself as would complete 500kms while reaching home from work, I got my bike from the second lot which had all the issues rectified i.e an updated ECU and stuff, my question is have they come up with another update for the ECU or not?

This is slightly different from the print copy. Especially the Oil change interval.

Visited the service center just now. They replace engine oil at every service i.e every 5000 KMs. So, don't go with the printed manual interval of 10000 Kms for oil change.Originally posted by I Ride Alone View PostDownload the manual from

Insist on changing oil every 5000 KMs.

Yes 10000kms is anyway overrated for any oil better to change at 4 to 5k kms.Originally posted by I Ride Alone View PostVisited the service center just now. They replace engine oil at every service i.e every 5000 KMs. So, don't go with the printed manual interval of 10000 Kms for oil change.

The bike feels stressed with high revs 4500 + in first and second. So i generally push it only from 3rd onwards. I am getting 29/30 kmpl in city + highway mix.Originally posted by SoUL_Rider View PostFor those rider's who are getting a mileage of 30+kmpl how are you guys riding the bike keeping the revs under 4k or simply accelerating gradually untill vibes go away?

Re: Bajaj Dominar 400 Ownership Experience Thread
Generally, engine oil & coolants are filled up to mid-level from the factory, but eventually they will get consumed by gaskets, air pockets and crevices in a brand new engine, hence the levels hover around low/Min mark. My advice is always top up the required fluids & not to wait till first service for this.
About the coolant: Bajaj recommends 'Bajaj Koolex' (made by HP) unfortunately this coolant's availability is very less/nil. It is perfectly safe to use Motul Inugel Expert & it is factory filled in NS/RS/D400. SVC's top-up with Inugel itself in the first service.
International Dominar 400 owner manual mentions Motocool expert can be used, though this would require a complete drain & flushing of the radiator system. Coolants are color coded & it is recommended never to mix 2 different colored coolants & also not to mix coolants of different brand/product even though of same color.
Inugel (Green) is a conventional (IAT) coolant like majority of others in the market. They are inorganic & glycol based with silicate agents to keep the passages clean & corrosion free. Drain interval will be roughly 1-2 years depending upon usage & climatic conditions. But if kept in the system long after the coolant's life is over, they might cause gasket leaks, water pump seal failures and may even cause deposits.
Newer organic acid (OAT) coolants based on DEX-cool are available in western nations, few car manufacturers use them. They do not wear off gaskets or cause water pump seal failure. they last longer, but their cleaning action wont be as good as of inorganic coolants. Drain interval will be roughly 3-4 years depending upon usage & climatic conditions. But they are expensive, not available everywhere & not compatible with all radiators.
Motocool (Yellow) is a hybrid (HOAT) coolant. Theoretically it combines the benefits of both organic & inorganic coolants to form a perfect coolant. However, in real life it did not bring any significant changes over the stock coolant, as per the reports from owners who changed it. Costs double the price of Inugel.

Easily possible, i have also seen somewhere 156kmph on gps, and i guess gps readings could be different.Originally posted by IamAditya View Post

Re: Bajaj Dominar 400 Ownership Experience Thread
Please share the method you are using to check the engine oil level.
Some of the methods are below. Manual does not say anything other than check every morning before riding.
- Run the engine is run for 3-5 minutes. Wait for 15 minutes and check the level.
- Check the level first thing in the morning. (Cold oil level)
- Check a few minutes after you come back from a ride. (Hot oil level)
I notice that the Oil actually expands quite a bit when hot. The Hot oil method shows that the level is on the upper limit. (Checking after returning from a ride)
The cold oil method (Morning check) shows the oil a lot thicker and slightly below the low limit.
Service center guy shows the hot oil level and says, they pour the entire content of 1.5 liter oil can. So it should be correct level only. To top up, I need to buy 1.5 liter can of oil. This can'e be utilized during oil change as it will be less for the 1.5 liter needed.
Confused

Re: Bajaj Dominar 400 Ownership Experience Thread
Odo reading currently at 3100kms, bike is showing characteristics of infamous throttle lag at higher gears i.e. 3rd gear and above when accelerating.. Does ECU reset as told by few owners here really help? Is it recommended to take it to SVC or should I do it on my own??

Re: Bajaj Dominar 400 Ownership Experience Thread
The method mentioned for checking the oil level is correct. However the oil doesn't 'expand' or such, It is just the oil pump pumping the oil back into the sump from which you will see the rise in oil level, when engine is hot.Originally posted by I Ride Alone View PostPlease share the method you are using to check the engine oil level.

Engine oil quantity needed is 1.5 liter, however during oil filter replacement, we need to immerse the new oil filter in new oil till the paper element fully absorbs the oil. This process will cost about 50-100ml oil. Majority of mechanics avoid doing this to save oil or buying another bottle of oil. But I strongly recommend to do it because it is the correct method of oil filter change.
Please buy one spare oil can for purposes like this.

Re: Bajaj Dominar 400 Ownership Experience Thread
Hi guys, need help on oil levels. Mine is just 40 kms on odo. But can't see any oil in that small window in the engine area.. Is it possible that there will be very level oil.
I had read somewhere that the company filled is a mixture of few things and not exactly engine oil so what is the color I should expect to see in that small window of oil
