Can the ABS component be retrofitted? Is there any official communication on this?

I'm with you Bro... Its been only 20 Days since I bought ( after going through all the rumors and deciding that ABS would not be launched in atleast 3-4 months) and to get this news is heartbreaking !
But yeah, I console my heart saying paying 8-9K more is out of my budget !

        I think I'll do the same !!!

But just for information purposes, can anyone explain how exactly does this ABS component work? The video mentions about the sensors sending signals to the ECU, but how does it technically function?

        • Revving of RTR....

Hi Guys... Do your bikes rev freely till 12k rpm??? I mean, does it hiccup somewhere around 10-11k rpm??? even in neutral or in gear??

Its been quite a long time since my needle saw 12k on the tacho.. The engine just hiccups at 10k... Even in 5th gear... As a result, my top speed is restricted to 115-120 kph... Or at most 121 sometimes on downhills... Beyond that, The bike just behaves like there is clutch slip... If you understand... I don not know how to describe it better...

I just had the clutch plates replaced and a revised Tci unit put in...(3rd iteration of the Tci)... But there seems no improvement...

BTW, my bike s done 20k kms and the Carb Tuning seems perfect otherwise, IMHO...

What is Antilock Braking System (ABS) ?

ABS stands for Antilock Braking System. It prevents the "locking up" of wheels on the motorcycle so that one remains in control of the vehicle.

What is "Locking up" of wheels?

All of us would have applied brakes on loose surface like on gravel/sandy roads or on wet roads. I am sure that most of us would have sometime experienced the scary sensation when the wheels on our bikes stop spinning on braking because of the lack of grip. This particular stopping of spinning of the wheels due to lack of road grip is called as "Locking up" of wheels.

Locking up of the rear wheel result the bike's rear end slide like a "fishtail"(as shown in the photo below). Locking up of the front wheel in majority of cases results in a crash. Regaining control of a two wheeler in case of a front wheel lock is very difficult.

            How does ABS work?

            • 1. The ABS has electronic sensors attached to each wheel which monitors the rotation of the individual wheels
            • 2. On application of brakes, whenever the ABS detects that the wheels are about to lock up (when both wheels starts to rotate at different speeds), it automatically releases and applies pressure on the brakes
            • 3. This automatic modulation of brakes can happen multiple times in a single second (which gives a sensation of pulsation while braking).

What the ABS does is lets the rider remain in control on loose/slippery surface in situations of panic braking.

The video posted below quite clearly demonstrates the difference ABS can make in saving you from a crash.

YouTube - Mandatory ABS on Motorcycles?

Note: ABS is not a motorcycle stunters favorite feature. Since ABS prevents the wheels to rotate at different speeds, doing stoppies is not possible with the ABS engaged. But then there can always be an option to shuff off the ABS with the flick of a switch.

            • ^^Good explaination......

& ABS is must, for TVS tires....
The probability of fishtailing would definitely be higher on TVS tires...

I have mentioned the above thing after having a word with TVS service engineer.
Guys one more thing i forgot to mention about in my earlier post. The TVS service engineer told me that there are changing the TCI unit of old RTR 180's free of cost under warranty as the earlier one had some faults which lead to One way clutch failure.
Anyone with the older lot can go to TVS SVC and demand for the TCI unit change and as per him the SVC guys are bound to change the unit.

I got mine changed under warranty with the last engine work.

Hope this information will help many guys.

Chassis wouldn't be any different. The difference is in the ECU, Discs, an ON/OFF button(near the Speedometer) and an Indicator(in the Tachometer). So a minimum expense of 10-12 K is what you would incur in-case we are able to fit it onto our bikes !! I would rather buy a new bike !!

                      • Got my 1st service done today !! Tristar TVS, Bangalore has a new Express Service option. You need to book a slot a day in advance and they promise u the service in 1 hour flat !

I had done 710 kms on the ODD (18 days since purchase). Booked a slot, inquired about Engine Oil, SVC said they had TVS Tru4 and Castrol Activ 20w40. Took the bike to the SVC, The Supervisor asked if I had any problems. I had none apart from the handle sqeaking noise ! Asked him to fill Castrol oil (infact i kept reminding him about it until the Oil was filled ). General service done along with wash and polish. Final amount came upto Rs. 230. The bill said TVS TRU$ oil = 180 Rs.. I dint question him (Since I was sure he put Castrol) . Paid the amount and I was back onto the road with my beast !!

Bike feels so smooth now. Gear shifts are slick (may be coz of the Oil). Bike had a chain sound issue after service, visited them again in 30 mins and got it sorted out! The mech loosened the chain and oiled it. Back again on the road with no issues at all and ready for my 1st long drive.

A very good service(unlike what others here claimed) !

P.S: I'm planning to do a solo Blore-Mys-Blore this Sunday... Lets see how it goes ! (Let me know if anyone wants to join !)
