Numbers don't lie.. unless the dude messed up the readings I guess it's more bassy with the aftermarket exhausts. Besides, you don't want it too loud, I used to have an exact copy of the full system daytona exhaust made by the Yamaha workshop on infantry road for my Fz. And that thing was seriously loud. I used to go temporarily deaf after riding it for more than 3 hours.

On the airfilter, when does it needs to be replaced? Every 12K kms?
even if the bike is left open for days on end nothing happens she starts with a minimum fuss. keeping covered is sort of pampering your ride. i dont think there is anything more to it.

i think air filter is replaced at 18 k or 2 years - i have to check the manual to confirm.

talking of fuel i was not satisfied with IOC extra premiumfuel i filled once from pattom pump. so i am sticking on with BP speed and fill always from the kawdiar pump next to cafe coffee day.

2 things you can always do on your own. 1. cleaning the air filter 2. lubricating the chain. only for kerala ninjas its better to keep your bike covered while parking overnight even if you have a covered shed. this keeps the humidity away esp from your air filter and help you with a good start up in the morning.
Ninja has priority on probiking service centers rite? but there is nothing like that in tvm probiking. I have done 3 services there, they are always delaying every services. Once I called a day for booking they gave me a date. When I reched there in the morning they said mechanic is not available so please come tomorrow. Then I returned to home which is 40 kms away from pbk. Went there next day morning at 9 am, they said comeback at 6pm, I went for a movie then went there afternoon but the bike was not touched. Then saw the manager to get it serviced.

This time I am really fed up, gave the bike on thursday(booked via phone as an immediate tyre change needed) for a tyre and oil change, horrible. But they says come back on tuesday. this is horrible. When I had R15 I always got priority servicing, entire servicing will take 4 or 5 hours only.

I am able to do oil and oil filter change, chain adjustment and lubrication, tyre change, disc pad change, air filter cleaning etc. But lack of paddock stand and torque wrench is a problem to do many maintannace works. So only doing chain lubrication and air filter claning now these days.

I was using extra premium only. Next time I will try BP speed. Thankyou

According to owners manual air filter cleaning should be done every 12 k kms and replacement is every 2 years.

May be it is time for you to get in touch with the higher authorities (Bajaj) and explain them the complete scenario..

PM me if you need some more help... I have raised a similar request couple of months back.

I have raised my voice before, but no use. The problem is only one svc in whole kerala. So there is no other options if I make trouble with them. They agreed to give my bike on wednesday (almost 1 week) . If they don't I will certainly complain to the higher authorities.

Actually your braking style is spot on for a sportsbike!

The weight distribution of the bike is front-biased, so using the front brakes with engine braking to synch the rear wheel speed is actually the correct way to brake a sportsbike. The rear brake is to assist the rear-wheel rotational speed with minimal inputs.

I've seen many track riders burn through front-pads regularly while the rear is often untouched.

                      • After the disappointing reply from the Thane service centre over the phone, I talked to Bajaj directly. I got asked to send an email, and to my surprise I got a call within an hour with the details of the in-charge at the Thane service centre. He explained to me that they can diagnose the fault electronically, and therefore to bring it to the service center. I didn't want to do that but I saw the logic in his argument and asked him when I could get it over. He said "anytime", so in the afternoon I took my unfaired motorcycle over. The way the guard said "have you got an appointment?" gave me the impression that I couldn't just show up at the service centre with a problem.
Talked to a the workshop in-charge and to my surprise there wasn't any separate diagnostics tool for the motorcycle - next post will have the details. The mechanic asked me if a fuse had blown and I said no, because my regular mechanic said he'd checked all the fuses (he's been 100% right so far, so no reason for me to question him) and it turned out that the error code was for the radiator fan relay - apparently it was malfunctioning. I found this strange because I could feel the hot air on my arm while riding on the highway that generally signals the radiator fan turning on, but hey, The Computer Is Always Right, so I said okay, get the part. They didn't have one in stock. Asked how much it costs, got a lot of shifty-eyed hemming and hawing and got asked for an advance.
In the meanwhile Vijay, the helpful mechanic (who is also highly recommended by shamshuis of this forum) said "let me check the fuses anyway) and he did - turned out the radiator fan relay fuse had blown. The workshop people were VERY relieved, which was strange - until they told me the cost of the fan relay. Between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000. Gulp. I'm glad I had a fuse problem and nothing else. He replaced the fuse with one of the spares but strangely refused to replace the spare fuse. In my relief I didn't insist and came home, only to find that the Ninja 250's fuses are unique to it - neither the Indian nor imported motorcycles use similar sized fuses (if I'm wrong, please correct me - it'll help!) so if you're going to go touring with your motorcycle, take a bunch of spare 10A fuses along, and a couple of 15A ones as well.

They requested me to keep coming in for service, else they get a lot of questioning from Bajaj. After this experience I DO want to go for official service, but I didn't like the fact that I needed to take an appointment or the fact that they wanted to keep the motorcycle overnight for diagnosis. I understand they are busy people, but if they agreed to me coming in that day they should have been better prepared. I also saved them at least 30 minutes' worth of work by taking the bike minus the fairing, and I would have expected them to account for that and put in at least that much time before throwing in the towel and asking me to keep the motorcycle there.

Credit where credit is due, however: the staff was very helpful, especially Vijay the mechanic who went out of his way to check everything and explain the technicalities in as simple terms as possible. The only fly in the ointment is the Bajaj angle: if I hadn't talked to Bajaj directly would they have been as helpful and accomodating? That's one question I don't know the answer to.

To modify the statement from The Matrix, "There is no tool". A diagnostic one, that is. Here's what you do if your FI light comes on (and all the fuses seem intact.)

I can put photos or a video up if you like, based on popular demand. If you want it, say so.

                            1. Remove the pillion seat.
                            2. Look on the right side of the subframe - you'll find a lone wire that seems to have been forgotten because it's connected only at one end.
                            3. Turn your ignition key to the 'on' position and wait until everything settles.
                            4. Push the plastic sheath on the free end of the wire you just found back and ground the metal end on the chassis.
                            5. Watch the FI light - if it stays constantly on, you haven't grounded the wire properly. Try again, either with a firmer hand or on a different part of the chassis.
                            6. Once you get it right, the FI light will go off momentarily and then start flashing. There are long flashes and short flashes, separated by a second of the FI light staying off. Make sure you've got the entire sequence before you remove the wire from its grounding. Do this at least two times so that you've got the number of flashes right.
                            7. Look up the error codes from the list below and take appropriate action.
My radiator fan fuse got blown on the third day after i bought it, way back in April 2010. Had to drive another 120 kms (Was somewhere in Alibaug then) to reach the service station back to Pune. THe Bajaj guys (esp Kiran Devekar) from Pune assured me that there is really nothing wrong with the bike, you can still ride it but to take it very easy on the throttle. He even assured me that if i could get to Vashi before 7 pm, they will fix the stuff in Vashi itself! Ultimately, i couldnt make vashi by 7, but they did rectify the same for me in pune (exactly in the way as you had mentioned) and yes, didnot replace the fuse thou!

I have had a run in with the Thane guys before, to change my rear brake lever. Didnt like them one bit. Made me walk around quite a bit which i dint like again. Ultimately came back w/o changing anything. Shoddy service and worst amongst all. (Have been to Pune, Thane, Bangalore, Chennai and Trivandrum, all for Ninja related stuff)

Well the Trivandrum guys were pretty laid back when i got the bike for the third service. I dont blame them thou , its kerala after all! Kept me waiting for a little while (he was dealing with some other customers) but had the courtesy to offer a seat too while waiting. Once he was free, he was quite good and finished in time. Again this happened in April 2010. So the times might have changed now!

The best service so far - Probiking Chennai at Adyar.-Jan 2012
Changing the chain (mind you you have to take out the swing arm to change the chain), front sprocket change, rear sprocket change, plus cleaning all that mutt whihc has gathered over in 2 hours flat!! Now go beat that.
The Service centre head Narayan was great to interact with and the mechanic too. The mechanic said he will do it in 2 hours ( i was a lil skeptical thou) and did it in exactly two hours. Now thats what i would call a confident delivery!!

If the rear shock isn't sagging, take a close look at the rear subframe. Did the previous owner carry a pillion around a lot of the time?
