A K&N, and all other things in stock is of no use except sound.

    Or, do this thing

Go to a bike tuner, ask him to remove the snorkel / connect the K&N directly to carb, and upjet the carb. Performance will increase.

Yes you are right.. I have taken out the stock air filter and replaced with K&N.. everything else is stock... The sound has changed and also the smoothness.. I DO have upjet the carb but didnt get a good tuner to do that job for me in Jaipur. After searching a lot I got a good race tuner who himself is a motocross racer. I have discussed this with him and he has agreed to upjet the carb for my zma. Now i am little busy with my studies so I will wait for one or two weeks and get it done.. what would be the right size for the Main and Pilot jet? I was thinking of 135 Main & 40/42 Pilot.. and what are the other things I have to keep in mind after rejetting the carb?

And one more question.. Have anyone here tried 33mm card on their ZMA? and if yes what are the advantages of it? I asked the same thing to psi sir.. but he havent replied me yet

Good way to screw a bike :-P besides.. connecting the knn directly to the carb is gonna kikl the engine faster.. :-)

For those who are crazy about performance.. why did you guys get the karizma or the zmr?? You could have gone for the pulsar or the r15.. dont mess up the stock settings unless you have so much money that you can afford a new bike every 2years or if you are ready to open the engine every 2yrs??

Praising the 33mm carb ? I think you are mistaken...Except Bullet 350 or 500 no other carburetor bike can use the 33mm....if you try to use it in ZMA your Low to Mid RPM will be bad and will have cold start problems...at low speeds, a Splendor can easily overtake you....Only beyond 4.5~5 K RPM you will see better acceleration at the cost of FE...do not even think of fitting a 33mm in ZMA...

Quote from Adarsh in the OTHER thread. He has reverted back to stock carb and is happy.

                    1. Better top end and a somewhat linear power delivery compared to stock. Hit 139kmph many times as opposed to 130kmph with stock carb.

                    2. Reduced vibes at higher rpms.

                    3. Makes city riding, overtaking, ghats, corners much more enjoyable.

                    Disadvantages :

                    1. FE takes a massive hit! I used to get atleast 38kmpl with stock carb no matter what kind of riding I do. But the highest I got with this carb was 37kmpl! and that was non stop riding in highways in speeds on 60-70kmph consistently. You ride at 120+ kmph at wide open throttle in highways and FE drops to 28-30kmpl. FE in city was around 30-34kmpl. After tuning the carb myself, the lower half of throttle is almost stoich, with brown coloured spark plug but the other half is fully black so clearly indicating richer tune. Maybe with proper jetting it might improve but I guess it is safer to have richer tune at higher rpms than a leaner one! But best to have a stoich one Will try to get appropriate jets and verify again.

                    2. The idling and sub 2k rpm is unstable. No matter what I do the idle fluctuates a lot and according to seller it cannot be rectified.

                    3. Cold start is an issue. Choke is a must, daily morning and evening.

Damn! CERTAIN MEMBERS had told me the exact same thing so many times during our discussions through PMs but still I was greedy for power went for it! Cant say I regret this decision but cant say I enjoy it wholeheartedly either!

Thanks for posting it here Divya, if my experience helps others decide better, I am more than happy

Would like to clarify one thing regarding this "3. Makes city riding, overtaking, ghats, corners much more enjoyable. " It doesnt make city riding better, but makes overtaking easier. Riding at low rpms is a pain!

But one thing you guys gotta help me out with... I do love this sound of K&N.. so guys, is there any method I can keep the K&N on my bike without going for bigger jets and screwing up my FE and the engine?

Any performance filter is going to screw the engine if not immediately but at a faster pace.. if you like the sound that KnN provides then remove the snorkel and you will get the similar sound but with the stock setup..

I fit back the snorkel and boy the ride is smooth and yup. It was my fingers playing the game along with the mind.. very minute difference with the snorkel fitted and removed..

After 13 days.. rather on the 15th day i started my bike and the engine came to life on the very first self.. was riding a hunk the past 13 days and boy when i leave the clutch as i did with hunk the beast within my black Pearl wad unleashed.. woop and a wheelie popped up.. no intentions of it though.. am glad to have come back to my place.. yipppeee.. but still will miss chennai.. :-(

Thanks bro.. I guess I will go back to stock after a week or so... cuz I had left the whole airfilter box with brand new air filter from service centre, with a friend who installed K&N for me

                                Simple answer, no!

To make your understanding clear, on the contrary to what you posted above, going for bigger jets will make the air to fuel ratio close to ideal, thus reducing the chances of screwing your engine. FE will take a hit, but a slight bump in performance will be noticeable.

The main reason for screwing the engine is the filter itself! It will allow more air into the engine by lesser filtration, thus more dust will be entering the engine. This is the main culprit!

And how long have you been riding with K&N?? Trust me, you may like the exhaust note now, but after sometime you get used to it. It is not really worth the risk it carries along with it.
