It's a beauty! I'm finding the riding comfort incredibly good!
Have already driven 55 km today,
and in this 55 km, I haven't strictly followed the company recommended break in process, but I haven't gone too extreme either. Based on numerous online articles, here's what I have done: I've idled a couple of minutes before starting to allow the engine to warm up. Have tried to constantly vary the engine RPM between 2.5 to 5k. Have touched 80 kmph once. Have used engine compression braking as much as possible.

So, here are some newbie questions for the veteran ZMR owners again:

    1. Did I do the right thing or wrong?
    2. What should I do next and how should I ride the next few hundred kms, until first servicing.
    3. I know as per recommendation of many folks, I should use the Shell Advanced engine oil, but when should I replace it for the first time? Should I wait for the first servicing? Also, do I need 2 1ltr bottles, since ZMR's oil capacity is 1.3?
    4. Something I found really weird: the cardboard cover on the oil cooler is still on on my bike. When I pointed it out to the mechanics they said that it should be removed only after the first servicing. Is it really true? If so, what's the rationale? If not, should I just take it off? :what:
    5. The engine is generating quite some heat, and I get a burning smell. Again the mechanics said that it's because the oil sprinkled on the engine is burning, and is normal on a new bike. Is that true? Even the heat is normal? Or is it for the cardboard on the oil cooler?

Here's a snap of my new bike at the dealership (with myself on it )

    Congrats for the bike.

Burning smell/overheating is common in all new karizma and it will go away as the engine sets in.

You should remove the cover asap as it is preventing cooler aid in engine cooling.

In the mornings just let the engine idle for 30-40 seconds and start. (no need of two minute idling & unnecessary fuel wastage)

    Don't redline and exceed 80kmph.

However u should be varying your speeds for better engine run in.

Could this be a problem? @psr sir, should I be more careful since the new tire doesn't have center groove?

The below highlighted portions are worrying me.
Also, I changed the spark plug to G Power. Thank you Snehith bhai for helping me with finding the plug.

This is the condition of the plug I changed half an hour back. I guess all is well with the engine. @psr sir, the crush washer doesn't get crushed more.)
Change the tire ASAP...there is no water channel in center ,and no pattern..So the tire will skid most of the times......The Spark plug looks ok , and bviously it had not been tightened fully to flatten the crush washer. This would mean poor sealing and temperature transfer...

@psr @Divya Sharan today while braking from speeds of 80-90 (with a pillion onboard) I experienced screeching noise from my brakes. It has now held on & is consistently troubling me. How to solve the problem? My bike has done 1300km. It doesn't occur when braking from 50-55, but only if i brake from speeds above 60kmph. I regret riding too fast with pillion onboard. With only me on the bike, I think it would have never happened. damn..
she was running terrific till now. I put too much force on the brakes today in the corners with the added weight. I'm regretting my antics now.

Try cleaning the disc. It might be due to dust. Wipe the disc with a wet cloth and spray water slowly such that it reaches the break pads. And while doing so, keep the wheel rotating. When i did so, the sound was not there. It again re-appeared but then that was cause the pads were worn out completely.

1). I had read somewhere online that it is necessary to lubricate the brake pad pushing mechanism. So, I applied some white lithium grease onto the small pistons inside after washing about 1&1/2 months ago. Is it recommended?? Is it possible that due to the grease dust has clung onto it??

2). Also, I heard from my relative that it is not advisable to use a grease on a bike. If not, then what lubricant to use?

Had my first skid now while descending down the basement after it rained. The tire goes off tomorrow.

Bhai where did you pick the tyre from?

                ---------

Guys I have a query, my bike has gotten really harsh after a recent short ride. There is severe vibration at the footpegs, it feels as if the chain is skipping over the sprocket (may not be the right words but I couldn't really find anything else to describe it), also the gear shifter vibrates while riding. There is a feeling of uneven alignment while braking.

Had checked the sprockets and it looks fine, there was a little chainslack but even after tightening the problem hasn't solved.

My mechanic says it's the swingarm bush that is the culprit, could this be the case? Or is there any other reason for this kind of behaviour?

JC Road. I guess I chose the wrong shop and I wasn't very alert. I'll try the shop near my house and keep this tire with me or donate to someone as I can't go to JC road until Saturday and I'd need a fresh set ASAP! Damn.

Uneven alignment during breaking itself is a sign that your rear wheel has shifted. And your chain is thus sittin cross and if you have tightened the slack, then the harshness increases. I guess the swing arm Bush has to be replaced.

I got the rear wheel alignment checked from three different guys (one SVC) all three concurred that it's fine but neither solved the problem, The SVC guys didn't have a look at the vibration problem so no advice from their end with regards to that. Tried different chain settings to see if the problem would go but no results

Firstly, thanks everyone, for your hearty congratulations and good wishes!
Although I had read all your comments and feedbacks, I couldn't reply earlier as I've been very busy lately with work and some other stuff.

                          Updates:
                          1. As everyone suggested I've removed the cardboard covering the oil cooler. I still have no clue why didn't the mechanics at the dealership remove it themselves in the first place, even after I pointed it out!
                          2. I've already clocked approx 140 Km, and that too without registration I only have the temporary number from the dealership.
                          3. I'm not facing the "elusive neutral" problem, as I had on the test bike. However, it's still a bit more difficult to get to neutral from 1st gear than it is to from 2nd.
                          4. The burning smell is much lesser now.
                          5. The engine heating appears to be lower too.

The engine will be more coarse now & so will need thicker mineral oils for the time being before bedding in properly. If u switch to Shell Advanced now, the engine will be damaged.
Else, reg. riding just ensure that u shift @ the right rpm's & all the gears are being used.
Wait for 1st servicing- all the little niggles like burning smell, coarse gearbox, etc wud go away. Better still, I've heard that the bike becomes butter smooth after the 3-4th servicing. & yes, u've to buy 2 bottles of the engine oil.
Rest, enjoy ur ride & drive safe.
                          Thanks!
I'm up shifting at around 4k on the tacho, and down shifting rather early now to do engine compression braking.

Regarding run in, no need to strictly follow any book. What you have done is ok. Just be gentle. That's all. Shift to AX7 after 5k on the ODO.
Also, REMOVE that oil cooler waala cardboard ASAP!!!
                          Thanks, man!
Removed it already! I'm being gentle (although it's difficult not to give in to your temptations on a bike like this!) and am avoiding very quick accelerations and revs over 5k.

You are doing the engine break in right, so continue with it. Remove the cardboard from the oil cooler to enable it to cool better.
First 500 Kms do not exceed 80 Kmph or 5 K RPM. after that till 1,000 Kms do not exceed 90 Kmph , 6 K RPM after which...you just enjoy the bike's smoothness at higher RPMs and speeds.
Change the oil at the first 250~300 Kms to wash away the initial crap which all new engines accumulate inside,..after that change oil at 1,000 on ODO.
Start using Shell AX7 from 250 Kms first oil change. It has ingredients to make your bike run smoothly and helps in proper setting in .
The Honda engine is a very capable one ,and is still manufactured by them for use in CRF 230.
                          Good Luck.
Thank you, PSR sir, for the very detailed reply!
(BTW, I'm rather new here, and have no idea why everyone calls you "sir", but I've seen that folks here have a great respect for you, so I'll address you the same too )
I'm continuing with the same breaking in process, and will until the first servicing. Removed the cardboard already.
However, what I'm a bit confused about is the oil change process.
Just as you have recommended, I also was thinking of getting the first oil changed in 250-300 km to clear the initial debris, but here are some (potentially dumb) questions:
                          1. Are you saying that I should take the bike for 1st servicing at 250-300 km and change the oil to the standard Hero one, and then after 250 km from that (around 500-550 km on odo) switch to Shell AX7? Please clarify
                          2. I'm advised by some other member here to switch to Shell only after 5-6k, and that it can damage the engine if I start using it too early before the breaking in process is completed. So, I'm a bit confused about these two contradictory advises. (I don't intend to start a debate here - just want to know what's the best thing to do)
                          3. Can I ask the Hero SVC guys to put Shell instead of the Hero one if I provide them the oil?
                          4. Will using Shell AX7 void the warranty even if I use the recommended is 10w-30 grade?

                          Thanks in anticipation!

And burning smell is pretty common in the bike when its new. And let the service guys change the oil for the first few services. If you try changing to a different brand then it voids warranty. That's what i was told here. And do not cross 60kmph till first 1000-1500 kms. And wish you a happy and safe ownership experience ahead!
Thanks man! I have a confusion about the oil change thing (see above).

Cut down high speeds for atleast 1000 kms....
It wd be feasible if u stick to stock engine oil n let the service guys change it for first 2 services.... Maybe after 3k on ur odo u can shift to shell advance
                          Remove the cardboard cover
Engine getting heated n burning smell is common on new engines.... The engine will get smooth after 1-2k kms

IMO, PSD weighs MORE than Zapper Q. I had a PSD 110/90-18 and I used it for a whopping 19,xxx kms. Only 1 puncture happened to it (I was lucky maybe) and that puncture killed the tire. Mileage loss in city as well as highways - only 1-2 kmpl. I'm running on Zapper Q 110/90-18 now. Its lighter than PSD. My mileage figures have come up from PSD days.
Also, 120 mm PSD would kill sprockets sooner! (weight matters)

I don't want to remove my chain cover ever. Why?

I had an open chain setup for 8k kms which killed my sprockets.
I lubed my chain every 400 kms and cleaned the entire sprocket kit every 2k kms. Still, open chain set died at 34k on the ODO. It could have lasted more.

Stock front tires are good. No issues whatsoever. Moreover, the tire you have fit though is branded as Michelin, it is made by TVS. Hence, be careful! I'm going for a front tire change today and needless to say, it would be either:
                            1. Stock MRF Zapper FS 80/100-18 or
                            2. Zapper FQ 80-100/18 (Stock TL tire for Passion XPro)

And P.P.S - If neither of your tires lock after applying full force on the brake levers, please get the braking mechanism checked. Something's wrong! Or maybe that you were too excited and exaggerated things a bit.
Just saw Zapper P size 90/90 - 18 TL!! - Is it possible to fit as in front tyre...??

I suggested 5k since I read somewhere that mineral oils are better for run in. Shell Ax7 is a highly refined mineral oil. Plus SVC won't entertain your requests for a non HH 10w30 oil any time. You'd have to get it done outside. But if you're great friends with the SVC manager, then its a different story altogether.

For god sakes, NO! It has no center groove. All front tyres from MRF have names starting from F. FS, FQ, FY etc.

Don't waste energy on trying to bring it to neutral on stand still.. let the clutch free and when it moves a little shift to neutral.. it will change without any problem while on stand still it won't change easily..
