I'm continuing with the same breaking in process, and will until the first servicing. Removed the cardboard already.
However, what I'm a bit confused about is the oil change process.
Just as you have recommended, I also was thinking of getting the first oil changed in 250-300 km to clear the initial debris, but here are some (potentially dumb) questions:
1. Are you saying that I should take the bike for 1st servicing at 250-300 km and change the oil to the standard Hero one, and then after 250 km from that (around 500-550 km on odo) switch to Shell AX7? Please clarify
2. I'm advised by some other member here to switch to Shell only after 5-6k, and that it can damage the engine if I start using it too early before the breaking in process is completed. So, I'm a bit confused about these two contradictory advises. (I don't intend to start a debate here - just want to know what's the best thing to do)
3. Can I ask the Hero SVC guys to put Shell instead of the Hero one if I provide them the oil?
4. Will using Shell AX7 void the warranty even if I use the recommended is 10w-30 grade?

Thanks in anticipation!
You don't have to mention Sir for me...I had requested a few members not to do so, but they do out of their own will...may be because I am old

1. Change oil after first 250 Kms to clean out the crap, and at that time change to Shell AX 7 .
2. Buy AX7 and carry it with you and insist on getting the oil changed to shell for better protection..stay near and get the oil changed...it does not void warranty.
3. Changing to AX7 at 250 Kms will do a world of Good to your engine, and the break in will give good results...In chennai we have used Shell Rimula R4 on a new 350 Kms old engine without warranty issues, and the bike is giving good FE and acceleration now at 6K Kms...AX7 has same good additives with less detergents as R4...

Thanks once again, PSR sir, for your detailed reply! (yes, I decided to stick to the "sir" thing )
I'll do as directed!

One quick question though....
As per the Shell India site, the only grade available in India for Shell AX7 is 10w-40, while the Hero recommendation for the ZMR is 10w-30.
Link: Shell Advance AX7 - India

Should that be a problem - both performance wise and warranty wise?
I did some quick reading on the way multi-grade oils are labelled, and it appears to me that using an oil with higher range is better since it'll retain it's viscosity across a larger temperature range. i.e. 10w-40 should be better than 10w-30. Is this understanding correct? Is there any technical downside to using a higher grade oil than the recommended?

This is probably obvious, but just wanted to confirm that if an oil meets JASO MA2 formulation, does it mean that it meets JASO MA as well ?

Update:
Just saw that Shell recommends the AX5 and the Ultra for Karizma as standard and premium oils respectively.
Link: The Shell global homepage - Shell Global
Is the above link specifically referring to the "Karizma R" (carburetted engine)?

I'm not doubting your (or anyone else's) recommendations here, and am sure you must have seen this yourself earlier already, but I'm really curious to know the rationale behind recommending AX7.

Though we've discussed it to death earlier on this thread, let me summarize it for you:

Karizma engines (both versions) are technically the same since 2003 with very minor updates. From 2003 to 2008 odd, the recommended grade was 20w40 and later it was declared in favor of 10w30. Hence, we can use w40 grade oil without any concern.

---------------------

Now, let me thank @Shiv_beam, @AK3D bhaijaan and @psr sir for inducing sense in me for changing the front tire. Moreover, the skid yesterday was enough to give me a restless night's sleep. Though I suffered a loss of 2k since the dealer didn't budge, it got the stock front fit today.

MRF Zapper FS 80-100/18. I can tour peacefully in the next 15 days now.

The Original Karizma came with 20w40 oil. The CRF 230 engine recommends the same...So a 10w40 is actually an improvement, while a 10w30 will lead to quicker oil demise and heating of engine....I had been using Shell Rimula R3x / R4 Diesel oil with good effect, since it contains higher level of ZDDP and detergents which keep the engine clean and less friction...

Nothing to thank, it was a big risk. I was surprised you bought a rear tyre for the front.
I suggest you write to (or call) the MRF local distributor asking them if they can advise on the tyre buyback since it's essentially unused. Someone in a managerial position will be more inclined to help rather than a dealer.

Welcome back! Nice investments there.
Good to see you discard that Ninja and upgrade to LS2. Nice color too.

Regarding my tire experiment, all I can say is LOL. It took just one skid.

Welcome back rreneav1987 glad to have to you back.

hey guys!

I have done almost 250 kms, and as psr sirs suggestion to get the oil changed to Shell AX7 10W40 oil:

Q I plan to get it changed at 300kms, this is fine right?
Q. Should I get it changed at SVC or is it okay to get it done at a local mechanic?
Q. Although PSR sir has reassured, this change won't void the warranty right? (Just to confirm).

1. Change oil after first 250 Kms to clean out the crap, and at that time change to Shell AX 7 .2. Buy AX7 and carry it with you and insist on getting the oil changed to shell for better protection..stay near

and get the oil changed...it does not void warranty.
3. Changing to AX7 at 250 Kms will do a world of Good to your engine, and the break in will give good

results...In chennai we have used Shell Rimula R4 on a new 350 Kms old engine without warranty issues, and

the bike is giving good FE and acceleration now at 6K Kms...AX7 has same good additives with less

detergents as R4...

Welcome! As you might have read, rimula has a lot of positive feedback as a best oil for karizma but if you are not interested in risking it, then there is the shell advance. Just look a few pages back and you will get to know of which oil in shell to use apart from rimula.
Regarding Tyre, again even this topic has been discussed loads of times and i guess pirelli is a good option as i feel it sticks to the road, the only down-side being that it is a soft compound. Other members have recently changed to mrf so lets wait for their review to come out.

Having used Rimula r3x/r4 for 22k odd kms and later(currently) shell advance ax7 for past 12k odd kms, I must admit I do find the ax7 to be much better, psr sir has also explained the advantages of this oil over the others a few pages back.

With ax7 (semi-synth) I change the oil about every 2.5k kms now. Rimula being pure mineral change interval would be around 1.5k kms.

For tyres here is a simple formula:

Better grip, shorter life: Pirelli
Decent grip, longer life: stock MRF/ other TT by MRF.

Request members to avoid PSD for now. Like Michelin's M45, PSDs have a huge demand and as a result there are a lot of fakes in the market. Even the 110 and 120 section tires look like 100 section ones.
