I'm assuming it's 12000 kms, as far as I know, white smoke is because of fuel not completely burning. You can get the timing chain checked. It's possible the timing's off. Also I hope you've done the running-in of the engine and the regular service and oil changes. I've a Chrome black C-5 and I'm getting about 22-25kmpl in cities and about 3kmpl increment on Highways. So mileage Is Not really your issue I'd say.

Hi Shri Ram,

Does it smell of burning oil? And is this only when you rev it hard ?

sorry to butt in to the discussion. Just wanted to share my joy. I got my 2010 black Classic 500 yesterday. I am so stoked!
And I have read so many times in this thread about how this machine surprises others on the road with its pick up. Man, I can back that up. I can be cruising nice and easy in 4th gear, and if I need to pass quickly, then no footwork required. Just throttle, and I can physically feel those sleeping horses waking up and kicking wildly!
I think I am in love.

Hey guys I had a thought of getting a windshield for my DS 500...I tried a local one but all it did was scratch a bit of paint off above my headlamp coz the thing was so loose and would vibrate like crazy. Does anyone know where I could get the RE one which used to come with the Machismo? Or any other company which might suit the DS? Thanks a lot!

Hello everyone... I have a doubt. I already own an Enfield TB350 2013 model and I'm thinking of going in for another Enfield. I'm confused between the Classic 350 and C5. My uncle owns a C5 and I feel that 500cc engine is a bit rough that 350 UCE. What is your take on it? I'm (to be precise it's my dad who's buying) buying another Enfield so that me and my dad both can tour together. And we both just LOVE Enfields.
The requirement from the bike are:
1) Good Range.
2) Easily Serviceable.
3) Relatively Reliable.

The bike will be majorly used for office trips which is one National Highway and a long ride (500-600 km min.) overnite ride.
I also have the Bullet 500 in view but it being a Carburetted one, the mileage will be very low as compared to the EFI one?!

harshavardhanchivate , being an Enfield owner you'd probably know that one simply Does not buy an Enfield for mileage. I'd like to clear one of the things you said about 500 bring rougher than 350.
I suggest you ride both of them one after other, then tell me it's rougher. I did it before buying, somehow I wasn't satisfied with 350. I wanted more. So I got a c5. In my opinion, c5 is the best Enfield except continental GT ofcourse. I don't like the TBTSs because I feel they look like imitation harleys (cruisers) which I do not approve of. But all have same engines so basically you/your dad should test ride them all and choose the best fit for you. For ex: one of my friends has an electra. He says he gets back ache in classic as the handle bar is slightly lower and a bit different shape.(I think. He brought his bike second hand, not sure if his handlebars are stock or custom) my point is, people have preferences. And an Enfield is for lifetime. So go to the showroom, ride them, fall in love, and then buy.

I'd say EFI is more reliable now as they have made loads of upgrades in recent years. I've an efi, runs beautifully. It's been about 6 months now.

Cast iron engines had those problems you mentioned. Being very rough, too much vibrations, erratic mileage fluctuations, etc. But with UCE they've tamed the bull, made it neat, powerful and consistently efficient. I'd say tell him to give them all a try and choose. Congrats and happy courtship!!

Maybe my uncle's C5 engine must have become rough. Because he has clocked around 37k km in a year. So that can be the reason. What you said about mileage I completely agree. But in a country like India you need to have good mileage since petrol stations selling good fuel are hard to find on state highways. NHs are not a tension though. Thats the only reason I need good FE. If the mileage difference between 350 & 500 isn't much I would go in for 500 surely. And other question, how good is the chrome plating quality on classic chrome. Because the chromed parts on my TB350 tend to accumulate a rust like brown coat easily. And how is the DS?!
And about your TB impression, I bought the bike since I liked the riding comfort (laid back feel)... And also it was the first one in Vadodara

Yes that is quite possible if he has completed 37k without regular maintenance. Since you have an Enfield you'd know how you gotta take care of your bike.

Yes, good fuel is always a problem we got no choice but to plan ahead.

If it's long distance touring, I'd say the mileage difference between 350 and 500 is not a thing to worry about. But if city riding is involved, your 500 drinks petrol like you'd drink cola after a cricket match on a sunny summer afternoon of Vadodara.
Anyway, my 500 gives around 25 in cities with 3 to 5km increment on highways. (I'm positive. I can't be sure as there is no way to measure it accurately) I heard 350 gives about 30-35km in city with similar increment on highway. Again, my info may not be accurate, please check. I know only about my c5.

Now about the chrome problem, you have to have to maintain it. Cleaning and polishing regularly and identifying the rust and removing it asap. Only then will your Enfield be shining. Desert storm is nice, but few people complain about paint cracking around the engine due to heat, RE says that's not true they'd have probably mishandled the paint with Wrong polish or something. Yes, matt paint requires a different kind of maintenance than normal paint.
Just to make it clear, the chrome plating on my classic chrome is beautiful, I comb my hair looking at it :P
Rusting has been a single point of complaint against royal Enfield, except for maybe poor workmanship. And there is no other solution I know of other than dedicated, consistent cleaning and maintenance.

Regarding our TBTS problem, like I said before, people have opinions and preferences. Which is why I said since engine is same, you have to only look which is the most comfortable for you to ride. For me it's classic. Do ride the classic 500(which comes in efi only) and the bullet standard 500(forest green) which is carbureted 500. Then make your call. But yes, availability of Good quality fuel is crucial for good functioning of efi. Otherwise you'll have frequent and expensive repairs. Hope I've reasonably answered your questions with the limited knowledge I have on this.

Anyone, please correct me if I'm wrong/inaccurate at any point.

Hey Guys,

Been a while, a new issue has popped up. My usual mechanic was MIA for a couple of months and i had to get an oil change done, I gave my bike to a new mechanic, and the idiot tells me my drain plug thread has fallen out!! .. He's somehow sealed it up for the time being with sealant and M Seal !! .. It seems that's what the RE Service center does too. Does anybody know where i can get helicoiling done in and around cochin??

Shri Ram, any update on your white smoke issue? Did you get it fixed? Was there an issue in the first place? anyway I think I'd given you wrong info. Since DS500 has an efi engine, you may need to see if ECU is working fine or get it re-mapped or something. Or sometimes there is white smoke when the outside weather is chilly. Just another opinion..
I'm curious about this. Let us know what was the issue okay? Thanks

Classic Cruzer : The dud who screwed up is the head mechanic at the RE service center. All of us know full well how good their service is.

Ive found a guy who has dealt with this before and he's sure it can be sorted out at a lathe. will keep you guys posted once i get it done. Just got back from Coorg, no oil leaks or anything yet.

Anyone going to Ladakh this year?
