I just bought a bike, a seconds Pulsar 150 2007 model. The problem is I have a bad battery(as suggested by mechanic). Also My first time on a bike, so am totally unaware about the techies...

    - Continuing, I have a bad battery, even the self start fails at some times(mostly crucial moments). And the problem I wanted to ask is about my headlight, its too dim, I cant see 2 feet ahead of me at night, so I avoid night travel, but that is what I don wanna miss....

    - So tell me, when I install HID or xenon lights, will I have to fit in a new battery?

    - Also after I went thru this thread, what I have understood is that these xenon lights come in normal YELLOW, cop-catching WHITE/BLUE/etc colours.
So this yellow colour will seem normal right, I wont be stopped by cops or sporting anything illegal on my bike right?
I am not so into white xenon lights..
I think u need one more brush up ur memory if've read those posts, an HID needs DC not AC, so obviously ur batt should be replaced and the charging rate too, else the new batt get fried within no time once u plonk an HID.

For a brighter HL u can rewind the coil and go for a bulb upgrade to 55/60W halogen, will cost u less than 700/- Make sure that ur HL dome glass is not a local one, it will fade/discolour and restrict the light. Original PDTSI dome will cost another 500/- And if u r happy to crank with ur leg and as long as ur horn honks then , no need to replace the batt too.

In Bangalore, Ruby charges 950rs for rewinding + custom RR. 150rs for fitting and stuff. Approx Rs.1100/-

Its a day light robbery For coil rewinding, it will take less than 200/- for the coil and for the labour another 200/- max 500/- charging here. For Pulsar no need of RR change for AC lighting.

    • @sajjit,

yes boss that amount is robbery ,i did my rewinding here in rs 180.

one query,to make ac headlight in pulsar just the coil rewinding is all? no need to touch the rr?
that means just rewind 4 light coils with 19 gauge wire with same fashion as oems, one grounded one out?
do you know the number of turns per pole or total length of wire should be used for it?
how much load can we give in this case 55/60-90/100-130/100?

but i think a 55/60 bulb will glow very nicely and the flicker will also be very less as the amp is very sable.
      your inputs please.
also if u have a simple circit dia for ac upgread plkease share here.

Ha ha this one am quite sure of it bcz it was my setup for 2.5 yrs. I've just done the coil rewinding but to boost the charging for the future plans of HID or so I've re-wounded that too. Only rewinding with thicker gauge as stock pattern with gnd. Just plonked a 55/60W wow what a change, but that wasn't enough for me, the electrician was promised me that it will support even a 90/100W so I tried that, that was for 6 months, during that time, I've changed the dome for 3 times bcz of the reflector melting. But I was addicted to that plasma glow Only with a 90/100W it took a little delay in changing beams but once I re routed the load by relays that too gone.

In an AC setup, at idle speed bulb will surely flicker thts quite normal. Wanna flicker free then go for DC conversion that's the only option.

Dude stock rr will support the coil rewinding for a AC setup our bottle neck is rectification side. Its restricted by the diodes they've used within the RR. Its my guarantee yar.

U dont've to be precise in the no of turns, only thing is it shouldnt be less than the stock turns, else, idle speed perfo will be pathetic. Hence we use 19g for rewinding, if we use thicker than hat it can not be accommodated within the stator. The rr will take care of the over voltage and bring it to the safer band by shunting.

No need of circuits, its a direct bolt n snap on job, get the coil rewinded and fix it and upgrade to a higher watt bulb, u r done. FOr better perfo, u can use the relays and it will take care of the life of the stock switch too.

wow, this is added to mine data bank also.after all its very cheap and easy way to increse light instantly without fiddling the electricals.

one more quary. is the normal dc relay we use in cars as the spst or dpdt are suiatable for this ac job or is ther any other special relay?

so its really easy to plonk a 90/'100 with amby dome in ac mode in pulsys old models .good yaar. please enlighten me about the realy in ac circuit.and the source will be taken from the ac out of the rr correct in the relay?

Drji, u r already an enlightened person with DC conv

For driving relays u need DC, I tried to tap from light wires thru rectifiers but to no avail, ended up with taking DC. Even I tried with a 90/100 with stock switch for a few days, but very little drives less than an hr or so, not being confident, installed relays and started melting reflectors

                • I have installed HID on my bike, but presently the battery charging is not touched. THerefore, charging the battery at low rpms can be an issue, which is evident by flickering of HID at standing position.

I think rerouting the AC connection going to headlights (which is lying idle now) to battery charging by converting it back to DC and feeding to battery positive should be good. I have already identified the yellow wire that goes to AC headlight power, but need to construct the regulator that converts AC current to DC.

I read the post by Abhijeet about the regulator, but some people were facing problems with burnt regulators. Any found causes for that? Can anyone help me in this rerouting?

                      • One question guys.

My headlight beam was pathetic all the time and i realised that only while riding back home yesterday from the tristate g2g. I'm looking at 3 options.

                        1. Removing my pilots and tail lamp bulb and fitting a 55/60 on my GS150R. not sure that the stock reflector would be of help.

                        2. Rewind my coil and plonk a 90/100 but worried if it would melt my reflector.

                        3. HID's. I'm doubtful if i can get a projector setup to fit my bke so it's going to be a HID only fit. I've had enough of high beam riders and its time i taught them a lesson. it might sound like revenge, but trust me, it's personal and vendetta is just a understatement. I've seen a ZMA with a HID without projector setup and the lowbeam intensity seems to be good. the highbeam, even though is not focused, is enough to highlight a decent distance. the bulb costs 1.5k but is surely worth it AFAIK.

                        Need some inputs guys!

I really wanted to do this for a long time. But could not because i didnt have good knowledge about electricals and also could not find proper people who could do the rewinding, circuit modding etc. It was then that i found a guy who showed me the lighted road . It was Doc who made it possible. It was Doc who helped me immensely in anything and everything that i needed to carry out this mod. It was light that i wanted and on came Doc with a halo around his head (an HID Halo ) just like God and said "Let there be Light."
I would leave the techincal explanation part to Doc. And as far as the result is concerned, all i can say is that the light gives as much confidence driving at night as a P220's light gives, if not more.

Hi Iron Man Am I wrong? Jokes apart,

The econo mod is to rewind and settle for a 55/60W halo, if u still want to do the DC conversion, then u need to change the RR and some wire mods for an HID bike. Details are in the prev pages.

Fitting an HID into the stock reflector is an easy snap on job, but at the cost of others happiness bcz being in a reflector ur HID makes a hell of glares to others. If u r ok with that, then this is the way how to screw others happiness.

                            • apache,mighty maniac machine,converted to full dc.

i am very happy to state that the mighty apache 180 rtr is converted to full dc 12 volt electrical systems.it was taken as a challange as its one of the very low number of bikes which are having tci ignition system which means that it takes all of its spark plug juice from the battery directly, not from a dedicated coil of magneto like a lot of other indian two wheelers.

the prob is if the charging isnt good as less then 13 volts as in less then 3k rpm the bike fails to perform properly as it fails to deliver the proper amount of amps to the tci ignition.

apache is having ac dc electricals and a 35 watt halogen bulb which runs on ac.magneto is a two phase system.weirdly it s rr is one of a kind, takes juice from both ac phase and converting it to dc and finally to battery.it can have a company claimed 100watt or so generator but the truthe is it will not even support a simple h4 55/60 bulb directly.
moreover coil rewinding and running a higher watt bulb in ac mode like many do in pulsys will also not work as the rr will fail as of its uniqueness.

many have tried but still there is no dedicatedone single thread where in we can find a single usefull info about dc convertion of apaches.

                              what we are doing?
we are changing a stock apache rtr 180/160 to full dc like zma/zmr/p 220/p 180,150ug 4s/r 15s etc.

                              what is the benefit?
well, apart from being alive after a night ride,a better electrical s here what we are getting here. we can run 55/60 halogen bulb flicker free or hids ,may be 2 hids, does that fit the bill?

is it gonna void the warranty?
                              yes it will.

                              is it safe and robust?
all the components are oem ,also these are used in different bikes which are modded to dc,working like a charm.but be warned,a proper knowledgeable electrician is required.its not a simple plug and play.

will there be any load in the engine after the mod?
no ,you will not notice any drop of engine performance.

                              so what we need todo?
                              a piaggio ape rr.
a apaches stator rewinded with 19 gauge wire in alternate fashion.

install the coil in place, rest all stock.there will be two wires coming out from the coil ,these wires to be connected to ape rrs two grey wires.the ape rr will have two more wire, one yellow, connect this to battery pos,one black, connect it to battery negetive.reroute all the electricals from the battery.use a relay for halogen bulb otherwise you will not be able to get the full intensity.

i tried my hands on guiterfreaks bike and his rtr 180 is now full dc running 55/60 bulb with ease.he can run this light all day ling ,no battery drain will be there.

                              happy riding.
