the prob is if the charging isnt good as less then 13 volts as in less then 3k rpm the bike fails to perform properly as it fails to deliver the proper amount of amps to the tci ignition.

apache is having ac dc electricals and a 35 watt halogen bulb which runs on ac.magneto is a two phase system.weirdly it s rr is one of a kind, takes juice from both ac phase and converting it to dc and finally to battery.it can have a company claimed 100watt or so generator but the truthe is it will not even support a simple h4 55/60 bulb directly.
moreover coil rewinding and running a higher watt bulb in ac mode like many do in pulsys will also not work as the rr will fail as of its uniqueness.

many have tried but still there is no dedicatedone single thread where in we can find a single usefull info about dc convertion of apaches.

    what we are doing?
we are changing a stock apache rtr 180/160 to full dc like zma/zmr/p 220/p 180,150ug 4s/r 15s etc.

    what is the benefit?
well, apart from being alive after a night ride,a better electrical s here what we are getting here. we can run 55/60 halogen bulb flicker free or hids ,may be 2 hids, does that fit the bill?

is it gonna void the warranty?
    yes it will.

    is it safe and robust?
all the components are oem ,also these are used in different bikes which are modded to dc,working like a charm.but be warned,a proper knowledgeable electrician is required.its not a simple plug and play.

will there be any load in the engine after the mod?
no ,you will not notice any drop of engine performance.

    so what we need todo?
    a piaggio ape rr.
a apaches stator rewinded with 19 gauge wire in alternate fashion.

install the coil in place, rest all stock.there will be two wires coming out from the coil ,these wires to be connected to ape rrs two grey wires.the ape rr will have two more wire, one yellow, connect this to battery pos,one black, connect it to battery negetive.reroute all the electricals from the battery.use a relay for halogen bulb otherwise you will not be able to get the full intensity.

i tried my hands on guiterfreaks bike and his rtr 180 is now full dc running 55/60 bulb with ease.he can run this light all day ling ,no battery drain will be there.

    happy riding.
Awesome Doc... Really good .. Please post a review again once all the testing and stuff is done.. It would be great if you can one by one work on other bikes also ie. gladiator / GS150R / Splendor :P

        • I am having my ballast of HID pressed in the headlight cluster only. Does it get too hot to create problem to the wiring there?

Even the Unicorn/CBZ-X/CBZ-Old/Hunk doesn't have separate coil for powering up the spark plug. They all use the Digital CDi which can sufficiently power up the spark plug with DC power. Even with low running DC power. (Yes your bike will feel jerky when headlights are on and battery is FRIED while running on DC)

Finally congrats on the successful mod.

r 15 s charging circuit is one of a kind, its delivering a massive 160 watts on paper and on reality it can drive 2 yes 2 hids rated 35 watts.
our fellow xbhpian http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/members/navnish.html is running this setup in his r 15 for more then a year or so,no probs, get in contact with him,you will get a good product in good price.

Congrats Doc, one more smart achivement in DC conversion and its time to start a dedicated DC conv help desk

Am sure that this will help many RTR owners to solve the pathetic HL perfo and hats off to u man.

Here's my 2 cents: Always feed the bulb with a thicker wire thru relays. Dont rely on the puny stock harness in DC conversion at any point except using it for the relay powering.

                              • Navnish, please see following posts:

The HID bulb is bit flickering, and I am confident it is not because of the battery, because all other battery operations like horn, indicators etc work perfectly. Also, the flickering seems random, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. I have one question for electronics experts:

In this HID, the bulb is moving Up and Down, rather than forward and backward. For this, the upper and dipper wires are both connected together to the red wire coming from battery. My question is, will it impact the current flown to either of them? This connection is in parallel, so 1/r = 1/r1 + 1/r2. I think somehow this is affecting the bulb flickering, and not the battery.

Please see the attached crude image.
