Re: Let there be Light : Bike Lighting, HID etc
to clarifyOriginally posted by sudipt24 View PostHi Sird
Thanks a lot for the reply.
i have put my comments below marked in Bold.
1. First look whether you bike need 35W or 55W bulb--- my bike has a stock bulb of 35w. so i guess 35w will do.
2. For HID, you'll need a Projector too. With projector its like pointing someone with a high voltage torch direct in eyes and make them blind for some seconds.
Cops will catch you. ------ Ok if i go without Projectors then will it be helpfull as i dont want to do all kind of modifications to the Headlight section as i dont know a good mechanic and moreover it will require more money and time, which is little difficult for me to arrange. i just want a HID which i can plug it directly without any modifications to the headlight Unit.
3. You cantry the Philips Extreme or Osram Night Break bulb. They don't need any projector. Just plug & play and they claim 80-90% more light than stock.
Google & search their website.------- I have Searched the website of both the companies but then those products are listed for Cars. do they fit in to Bikes and do they come in 35w. if not then what is the highest watt i can put as my bike has a 5amp Battery. Do you also know will they fit without any modifications.
4. Get 2 fog light kind of thing attached to your led / crash guards. (Gonna be under 1500-2000rs)------ I dont know how this is going to help. Do fog lights have that much of power in them and do they help in improving the visibility at night when it rains. Also will it put extra load on the Battery.
5. See whether you'r battery and charging coil can take HID or not. Else it irritates more & a headache thing if it starts draining battery.----- I dont have any idea to check this. do i need to go to a mechanic and if so, what i need to check. any advise on this.
6. Try your searching luck in 2nd hand market or Chor-Bazaar (Theft items markets) kind of thing & see if you can get Pulsar 220's Projector for cheap for anywhere. --------- This one is out of the Picture as it wont look good at all and then it will be the same (Doing modifications to the Headlight Unit which i dont like to do).
Thanks
only 4300K and 6000K are street legal. having said that HID in stock reflector is illegal regardless of color temperature because it will blind on-coming traffic and also cops will catch you. moreover you will waste approx 60% of output HID produces if used in reflector headlight. only way to get max performance is to use projector saying this from personal experience. I had installed 2 Hella E55 b-xenon projectors from audi A6 in R15 ofcourse fitting projector is a pain but it is well worth one projector is enough to lit 5 lane road.
If you do not want to drill holes you can always go for Morimoto H1 mini projector they are bolt on type but you have to remove glass to fit them little hard to find in India but you can always order them from aliexpress.com there are available for about $50 a pair including shipping (make sure to ask for Right hand drive).
Yamaha SZR has 12V 5Amp battery with this you can only use one HID comfortably provided you take few precautions like
1) Replace normal pilot bulbs with LED ones.
2) Never turn headlight on when engine is off.
3) turn headlight off when stopped at signal
A good HID ballast like Denso, Hella, Matsushita, Philips, Osram will draw 6Amp to 9Amp current on start up but once settled will draw about 3amp to 3.2amp and they are all Digital AC ballast what I mean by that is they take DC input and give out AC output. HID's are designed to work with AC current. Chinese ones (Not All but most available) gives out DC output. drawback is that bulb life will be short, brightness will be 30%-40% less, bulb will generate lot of heat.
Also any light above 4300K is useless in rain
also to clarify contrary to common belief more the color temperature less will be brightness in simple terms
brightness of HID
3000K > 4300K > 6000K > 8000K (Illegal anyways)
Hope this clears your doubtLast edited by kashif.sayed; 06-29-2013, 04:15 AM.

1st- Any 35W HID ballast draws approx the twice the power at start up, thats too for the 23Kv ignition time, after that it reaches down to sharp 6.2amps .. no 35W ballast will draw 9amp current even in start up .
2. there is no DC for the HID bulb, the Ignite-er cant work on DC, in so called DC ballast it gives square wave output , & after passing through the igniter , due to furrier spectrum change it becomes triangular . so still not as bad as people thinks .
The AC ballast gives pure sine wave output to the bulb, the size of the igniter gets reduced , & offers even wear on the both the electrodes of the HID bulb.
3. 30%-40% is a lot . . a 4300K general purpose 35W HID generates 3400Lm output . 40% is like 1300 lumen. & if it gets reduced then it's like only 2000lumen . approx half the brightness . I as using HID & dealing with different HIDs from past 2 years . & I never seen such a difference in AC ballast & DC ballast .
4300K is the brightest , 3000K is approx 2800lumen . 4300K is approx 3400lumen, 6000K is approx 2700lumen .

Ok , I am the co owner of the R&D motovil .
recently I have 3 numbers of Hella 35W HID ballast , I picked them up from a auction . It seems they are unused .

Kashif ,
little suggestions from my side .
previously I tried to fix 50W HID in SZR, it was darning the battery . the bike cant take 55W or 50W HID load but it should pull 55W halogen load without any problem . So you may buy a good quality HID bulb + a good quality ballast separately, & make a KIT out of it then it it can work wonders . .
another thing is that in now a days the good quality HID- H4 type bulbs comes with a all protected shield , even the bulb itself has a small metal shield that moves along with the bulb , so very very low glare on the oncoming traffic . But it wont be as good as projector .
I am attaching some pictures of the bulb & the output from a RTR .

As far as I remember , it comes with all metal reflector setup. & company provides 55W halogen as standard . So you can install 4300kelvin 50W/55W HID in them without any problem. & later go for 10W pencil beam LED fog lights for distance & penetration power .Originally posted by sumitro_d View Post@ Devraj bro I'm having a RE 350 Electra 4s what will be your preferred set up for HID for my bike?
& if you have extensive mods in your mind then you can go for projector setup , but without a clear glass the projector wont be 100% successful .
Here is some pictures of the LED fog lights , though the LED used in them is not Cree, but it serves the purpose . in Ebay you can get them in like 2500/- per pair

, Hello everyone, this is the first time I am posting in this thread I think, ok let me come to the point. . . I am using a Honda Unicorn 2006 model, . . The light during night is almost waste, sometimes I feel like I can drive without using them at all. . . I want to upgrade, what are the options and do include the cost also. . . Also I am planning to change the dome of my Unicorn with that of FZ and then install HID or projector, has the present one is too old and also the clamping is gone, if a hot air blower is used, I think it might break the glass into pieces, so presently is there any other alternative as I daily travel at night, so light is necessary and also sometimes, I cannot even see the pedestrians walking on the side of the road. . . So, please help me out guys, should I wait until I modify my headlight with that of FZ and then install the new kit or is there any alternative presently for my old headlight, that is without doing any modification. . . Thanks for your help in advance. . .
Cheers!!!

till the time you change the whole setup.. try cleaning the reflector and install a slightly larger bulb.. like 55/60W.. that would help you in at least knowing where you are going
as you know rains really decrease the visibility..
or if you could get the mod done as quickly as possible.. it would save some money in the heavier bulb..
Ride safe and have fun.

Re: Let there be Light : Bike Lighting, HID etc
Even I bought a Unicorn in 2006. And in the two years I used it, I never once felt the head light illumination inadequate. Of course a constant dc head lght would have been better, but I thought the brightness as such, was much better than even the stock Karizma headlight.Originally posted by Rakesh Rok View PostIn this Light thread

Maybe your headlamp unit has gotten muddy or the plastic cracked or something. If possible, clean and check or if cleaning is not an option then replace whole unit along with a new Halonix or Swiss bulb and then you will be surely better off. Or else HID is next option.

what is the condition of the reflector in terms of transparency ? If it's still transparent enough then go with the coil rewinding setup along with 55/60W bulb . + some external light like fog lights or similar . later you can shift to HIDs or reflector ! as your unicorn is AC/DC setup . so it wont let you run 55W halo without any modification ! .

Re: Let there be Light : Bike Lighting, HID etc
@nadz11.ns, @pixantz and @Devraj I'll just give it a try, for the cleaning part, should I need to remove the headlight, pour in some soap water, shake it and then drain it, again pour some fresh water, repeat it and drain it again or is there any other way to clean it. . ? Also as I said about the headlight removing part, the mechanic said it's not possible as the headlight is too old and it might just break if we try to open it using a hot blower, so don't want to take risk presently and also the clamp holding the headlight and doom is completely broken, so I will go for a replace. . . I think it'll take another 2 months for me to change the headlight. . . The cost for the new headlight, i.e., FZ with all genuine products, including the clamp of FZ will cost me around 2.5k to 3k and after I install that, which do you suggest me, projector or HID, which should be for long time and the cost of that. . ? Bro BTW @pixantz in city limits you won't notice so much change as the street lights and other things will be there but once you go on a road where there is complete darkness or highways, you'll know what I mean. . . About the coil rewinding, will pay a visit to a person or my mechanic who does modification things and speak about it, if that's a big thing then I will just wait and get the whole set changed. . . What you say guys. . ?
Cheers!!!

as you are saying.. opening the headlight could completely break the clamps and that would mean you bike would be completely without headlight..Originally posted by Rakesh Rok View Post@nadz11.ns, @pixantz and @Devraj I'll just give it a try, for the cleaning part, should I need to remove the headlight, pour in some soap water, shake it and then drain it, again pour some fresh water, repeat it and drain it again or is there any other way to clean it. . ? then its better to wait for the new installation.. and try to make that as soon as possible.. you won't want to make your bike useless at night..
as for the hid or projector.. that would mean additional 3-4k in addition to the cost of the FZ setup..
you simple could use a 55/60w bulb.. preferably philips night vision or osram.. those are also very bright and give adequate lighting..
Ride safe and have fun.

I think the branded projectors would not be less than 3-4k.. I'm nit sure about it.. Let other rider throw a better light on this..Originally posted by Rakesh Rok View PostAs many said, the projectors start with 1.5k or 2k and is the ones you are saying are branded. . ? What about those. . ?

what i mentioned above are simple bulbs, just like the stock ones, but of higher wattage and illumination.. And yes, these are good..
