engine seems to be pulling up?
i.m.h.o. one of the tell-tale signs of a bad piston block / damaged piston assembly / rings etc. is not getting the requisite pulling power despite the increase in rpm.
    here are my 2 cents:
option 1. u may approach mahalaxmi automobiles near tikuji ni wadi, thane - they are a service outlet of shriram bajaj & i know mechanics & technicians there in-person. they have done a fabulous job on my avenger 200 & have breathed a lease of new life in her - prolly the 1st time in over 5 years.

option 2. u may contact mr. kiran @ bajaj auto, pune - he is (was) the customer care ombudsman for probiking. talk to him - explain ur problem to him - he will point u to the appropriate service center in area of ur convenience & will ensure that ur ride is treated with due diligence.

i have shared contact details of both via a PM to u.

    hope that helps.
    cheers!

I own a bajaj pulsar 180 DTSI UG III model since 2006 and am residing in Mumbai. I have been getting my bike serviced at the bajaj authorized service centre most of the times. Recently, my bike has been facing problems with the engine. When i start the bike the engine seems to be pulling up. I could also see a little bit of smoke emitting from the exhaust and it also seems to be eating up the engine oil. On taking the bike to the service centre, the advisor informed me that there seems to be a problem with the block piston and he would have to replace it. On inquiring about the cost for the same, he told me that it would cost around 4500 INR. However, when i inquired about the same with a local mechanic, he quoted me 2500 INR. I am not sure if the local mechanic would be able to rectify the problem at almost half the cost. I do understand that being an authorized service centre, the charges would definitely be more but here, the difference is of 2000 rs which is a good amount of money. And again, I am not too keen on getting this job done at the service centre also, because i have seen these guys selling second hand parts to customers.

So can anyone help me find a mechanic in mumbai who can be trusted to get this job done and can someone also put some light on the huge price difference?

          @gadabout :-
Your problem seems to be similar to what I faced a few months ago. Even my bike was drinking engine oil like anything ... it would become almost half.
So after checking with the svc ctr , a local mechanic and a few other people (some from xbhp as well), It was evident that the inlet and exaust valves could be the problem.
When it was checked in the svc ctr , it was indeed bcoz of the valves that the engne oil was being exausted drastically. So installed new inlet and exaust valves and the problem has been rectified. Now i dont face the same problem. Infact we also checked the block-piston (which can also be a reason). Thankfully in my case the block-piston was fine.

Regarding the price difference - I think its basically because there are a lot of other companies that sell similar bike parts in the market at a relatively cheaper price compared to the authorised parts. The local mechanics know these brands very well. Plus i believe in a svc ctr a lot of taxes get levied which again increases the final cost to the consumer. However, I personally feel its always betetr to get your work done through a svc ctr because if anything goes wrong then you have somebody to catch. On the other hand with a local mechanic, you can actually do nothing.

          Hope this helps....

              Thanks mate,

However, i have got my bike checked at the service centre and the guys there only told me that they will have to open up the engine as it seems to be a problem with the block piston. Also, the price difference that i was talking about was after using bajaj parts. In Mumbai, there are a couple of bajaj authorized dealers where the parts are available at a cheaper rate as compared to the authorized service centre.

Last time when i got an oil change done, the technician at the service centre could retrieve only 50 ml of oil. So am not sure as to what exactly could be the problem here........

                @ saurabhjd : saurabh saheb... 2 updates...
mumbai to khed [mumbai goa highway]:
                - lots of diversions enroute due to road widening work all along
                - intense heat once the sun is up
                - but the road surface, wherever construction work is not being carried out is 'takka takk' [- a friend drove down from Rajapur yesterday]

kumbharli ghat is also being widened & condition of the road is 'normal'
                - checked @ bombay central s.t. depot with a 'laal dubba pilot' commuting on that route
                - i would not consider 'normal' by s.t. bus standards as 'normal' for 2 wheelers tho :-)

this prolly means that if we were to be back before sundown in mumbai on sunday 12th may, then we gotta start real early on both days. [bewde log... jaldi peekar chup chaap time par so janeka! LOL! ]

Happy to help. I would request you to please be personally there when the svc ctr guys open your engine. Just to ensure that is.
Regarding authorised Bajaj parts there should not be any price difference no matter where you are buying it from.

suggest that u talk to that ombudsman @ bajaj auto [#'s already shared over PM]

alternatively approach shreeram bajaj @ thane - and ask for mr. ambekar - a genuine, knowledgeable & amazing guy when it comes to pulsar's & avenger's.

google for shreeram bajaj workshop @ thane west [they also have one on ghatkopar i think] & talk to him - that will help for sure.

and i agree to what nagesh has stated above... u gotta be there n see it urself.

I will ensure to it that i am present when they open up the engine.
As far as the price difference is concerned, I am absolutely sure about it because i have checked it on multiple occasions. There is a bajaj authorized dealer at scooter market, lamington road and another one at chincholi bunder, malad and the price at both these places is less as compared to the other bajaj authorized dealers. You can let me know if you want the exact location of these shops.

I know what you are saying and I believe you as this CAN happen. I was just saying that IDEALLY the pricing should be same accross all auth spare parts dealers.
And yes , when you call the ombudsman you can inform him about this issue of difference in the price of parts. And whatever happens please let us know .
