  • Hi Guys ,

I am facing Cone Set issue Big time.... Bike has done 7000k kms and since last few days there was kut kut kut noise coming frm front of the bike.. Basicaly its due to faulty Cone set i guess.... Ysrtday while retutnin back frm office my bike started behaving strangly...
While taking turns handle was going toward trunin side too fast.. If i m turning right .. to goes right so quickly tht i find it vry hard to control.....Same is the other way when i turn Left ...

The sound of Knock knock keeps on coming under the Key lock .....

On the pot holes or at bumps.. I feel a thud on the front wheel.... Is the Fork also Loose...

i am thinkin of taking the bike for 1st paid servicing... But we have a trip plan this sat ....
please suggested is it a major issue...

    • Hey guys,

I got my new 180 last thursday and man what a machine it is!

However, from day 1, there is an issue with the rear-brake. WHenever I apply it, it makes this kut-kut noise and is barely effective. I went to the dealer from whom I bought it (Dewan Bajaj, Delhi - utterly bogus); the mechanics their tried to the shoes other way around, scrubbed, adjusted a few bolts leading up to the brake wire etc but nothing. This morning was the latest adjustment, the noise stopped for a while but it's back on again. Will take it to their damned service centre on my way back from office.

There's a also a slight grinding noise from the front wheel at times. As if the disc is sticking to the brake pads. But i put the bike on the centre stand and tried to rotate the front wheel, the play was totally free.

DO let me know if anyone has had similar experiences.

Btw, 348kms in 5 days. Mostly under 65k/hr but did succumb to temptation once and saw the digits 95 flash on the speedo for a fraction of second once. I know i shouldn't I have but just couldnt help it!

The sound of Knock knock keeps on coming under the Key lock .....

Recently I opened total headlight mess just to see where that khut khut sound and another vibration noise were coming from. I found that everything inside was fit and firm. But there was possibility of BCU which was loosely tied with a rubber strip knocking on other parts. But after some time I found that the left lampshade (tall black outer ring on the fork below the lock and I think other members are calling it coneset ) was moving a little in its space and was making khut khut sound by banging on other two rings who suppose to limit its movement.

Firstly I thought that other vibration noise was coming from bottom of lock but after looking closely that noise was generating because of the vibrating black plastic dial around key hole .

        solution :
        1. those lampshade / coneset can be changed at Rs. 200 according to SC.
        2. you can minimize the gap between that tall black outer ring and its limiting two rings by squeezing those two rings by big plair (tool).
        3. vibrating plastic dial can be stuck with a drop of feviquick.

It's very unlikely. P180 has the thickest one.

        Hey Welcome first...
Don't let her go above 50 kph.
Find that rear brake tightening bolt and rotate it clockwise until you are comfortable with braking. That bolt is located :

I know Its the black ring kind of thing just under the key lock ... There is little Gap there as well btwn two rings... You can hammer those gaps and adjust the handle movement...
          ..
but if u keep it to tight it wud affect the free movement of the handle..
Believe me even i am not sure how the thud is coming from the whole front assembly when the bike enters a pot hole... I have checkd air pressure twice..
          ..
I guess I wud need to take her to Sc first ...

Happy riding V.... Keep it under 5k and 65kph... but make sure u vary the Rpm... take it to 60-65 and leave the throttle which ll bring back the bike to 0 by itself...
          Happy Reving ....

          • Abhi, Neon is asking about Disc Brakes on the rear... When did 180's come with a rear disc??? Guess you are talking about the front
Yes, I read it wrong. My mistake.

            3. Bike's done a total of 16800 kms and I want to change the spark plugs so bought off 'NGK G-Power' (CR9EGP) ... Not plonked it yet..will get it done during the next service..
            2) Wattage of HID's? Price? Brand? Any glare? too many questions..

            3) Do post a review of those plugs. Get the plugs changed outside otherwise get it changed at SC in front of your eyes or they will swap them.

Front disk?? No Idea... I have seen some worstly maintained bikes but none of them have had a khattt sound from front disk. Are you sure the sound is llike Khattt only??

The huge KHAAAAAAAAATTT sound is from Cone set. Get it replaced.

That is to tight or loose the handle bars nothing else. If the cone set is faulty then change it. Also, my cone set is kaput from 10000kms and I have ridden my bike 2000kms from there on with a couple of trips. No problems. You can take it to anywhere you want.

front disc produces khat khat noise after it get a wash of water ( can be in rain)...somebody here rinsed the brake pads in diesel and that noise went away in 3 days.

              Update from me:
Last time bike gave millage of 47 kmpl despite 90 % riding on highway and above 90 kph .
Today I left bike for 4th free servicing. It had clocked 7601 km.
Issues to be covered in this servicing:
              1. khut khut from coneset / lampshade.
              2. vibrating black plastic dial around key hole.
              3. bike's coming to reserve too early and running hefty 200 km in reserve.

Guys any idea when should I get PUC done ?

The cone set is a set of bearings which are fitted into the stem (my guess as I inspected the opening of cone set personally at last service of bike and after opening that the SC guys said that it is out of stock and fitted the same one with new BALLs). My bike is not currently with me so I will take a look and then only tell which part you are talking about.

                Hey Welcome first...

Find that rear brake tightening bolt and rotate it clockwise until you are comfortable with braking. That bolt is located :

If you screw too tight then the brakes will be automatically applied. My experience when I got it too tight from a mechanic and then the brakes were making all sorts of chooo... chapad... noises. After that I got it loose and everything is fine.

I think I'm confused with coneset with lampshade.
                  In red box : lampshade
In blue box : cone set
                  correct ??
In my case the problem is with lampshade. And I think tightening won't affect handling.
If problem is with cone set than thud should be felt by your hands too.

Those are excellent mileage figures, if you are riding at and above 90kmph. God knows why my bike doesnot extracts more than 50-52kmpl, howsoever sane I ride it. Last time I calculated mileage was some 200kms ago and it was only 49kmpl with moderate speeds of 32-35kmph (average speed). But, there is no gain or loss in performance. I think that you guys have done some 'Nimbu-Mirchi Tantra-Mantra' on your bikes for more mileage, tell me one please.

                            1) Lampshade could'nt make such a loud thud\khut noise.

                            2) Will definitely check in my bike. Thanks for that.

                            3) That's no new thing. It's being a BORN DISEASE case with your beast.

PUC should be done after 6 months or 1 Year of the purchase of bike as I read somewhere and told by the PUC guy to me yesterday. Once PUC is done it is valid for 3 months after which you will have to do it again. It costed me only Rs 30.

WOW! this thread is overflowing with information, awesome work guys.
Thanks to all 180 owners. And you mindfreak, where did you disappeared for a long decade??

Get the RVM holder (female part) rethreaded by a manual threading tool available at lathe or mechanic shop. That's it done. The tool should look like this: (there are many types of threading tools each have same job but manufactured for different applications, the one you might get could look different.)

30-35 kph is super sane riding but not efficient...it's like expecting 30kpl millage from R1 by riding it under 60 kph. To get the best millage you should ride at 50-60 minimum.
About my bike I don't know...47 is the least and average figure on my bike. As I was using NH to commute I was expecting more millage but it returned 47. Some time back I took bike to little mountain riding...20-30 degree inclined roads comprise of thousands of pot holes that too with pillion....was expecting less but it returned 55 .

I have brought the bike home. They have done good job ( not great though). Engine is making less noise.

                              1. Lampshade changed; headlight is not making anymore khat khat noise nor is shaking. Now it's just like new piece.
                              2. Apparently they haven't done anything to reduce the vibration noise coming from lock black dial. As of now it's not making any noise may be because a big volume of water have gone inside as bike had several wash.
                              3. Fuel lock is replaced ( third time ).. let's hope it will work out good for me.
                              4. Rear brake free play is reduced.
Nothing else has changed to mention.

This service cost me Rs. 192

@abhi : Thanks for the image reference of cone set...turns out I was right about the difference between lampshade and coneset.

                                1) Lamp shade, why changed? Was it broken? Could you post some pictures of it? I couldnot figure it out?

                                2) Nothing can be done other than replacing it, but the sound will come again after sometime. My bike makes 3 types of sounds:

                                a) From under the lock @5K.

                                b) Dial vibrating..

                                c) Rear Brake noise, always there whatever I do it comes back.

                                3) Hope for peace now.

                                4) My rear brake has created more play from after 11,000kms. It seems like the brake pads will finish their life in another 2-3K kms.
