John P Daniel: "at a constant throttle feed during cruise at 70-80kmph speeds..is it normal?"
nope, get the carb checked, retuning might be required, more importantly, check for air leaks on the carb duct coming from airfilter and manifold and duct going towards head. and when was the last time airfilter was cleaned?
Well... That's what the mechanic did... All he did was clean the spark plugs, clan and tighten the ignition coil wire clips and tighten the duct screws before and after the carburetor. Now the bike is back in its full form..thanks for the tip..

these "small differences" are the ones that make me enjoy and love my bike..btw, is it ok for the bike to skip beats during idle when cold? Yesterday night I simply stated the bike and at 1000rpm, the bike simply skipped the alternating beats. It sounded almost like a RE bullet sound in its timing of beats..

Yesterday I was cruising at 113 kmph with almost full throttle. No more speed to attain. And that moment happened when a FZ overtook me at 130 kmph( almost). OMG I am worried how could a 14HP machine beating 17HP?. After that I altered the air screw with almost all possible position , but could'nt cross 115 kmph. The bike easily reaches 80 kmph but struggles to cross 100 kmph. No idea what has happened . Any solutions???

How much kms have you covered on odo? How's your air filter and oil condition? When was it last cleaned/replaced?

It is just two month old. Covered 3500 kms. New airfilter, New oil ( Two days old). I always replace the air filter . Costs just 85INR. My mechanic told me it is the faulty CDI giving less pickup, and also told me to apply warranty for it.
If I remove the Reed switch cable, I goes around 115KMPH.
If not, it wont cross 105KMPH

My new 2014 pulsar 180 is due for its first free service soon. I read a lot of you guys talking about motul being the best oil on this forum. If I choose to go for motul instead of Bajaj 10000, would it void my company warranty in case of any issues later ? please suggest.

No issues on warranty as long as you stick to the stock grade.

looks like both yer bikes speedos are kaput a stock p180 normally will do around about the speeds indicated on the odo you mentioned.
FZ @130 ?! I am worried too !! Are you sure it was a FZ and not a Duke 200

Dont mess with the TPS aka reed switch. Let the bike munch a few more miles and you should be gaining a few more kms on the top end.

It was a FZ for sure. And my local mechanic says the reed switch is faulty. Going to meet Engineer today. I also have a problem of bike hobbling. And I proved to SVC guys that it is the faulty front tyre which they initially refused. Today I am getting a solution for it. And also completing my 2nd service. As you said not to mess with REED switch, you are right. But in my case diconnecting the cable gives constant RPM. By connecting I get a difference of around 500 RPM varying continuously. And while riding also I feel the bike throttling itself every half a second. Today I am gonna eat their brains because I have a engineer with me. The same person who resolved my previous Issue.

Donot say them that you use different factory oil. And while service if they tell you that you need to replace oil, then show them the manual which says drain peroid for bajaj oil is 10000kms. I am also doing the same thing and my bike is two month old. I already tried bajaj till 600kms. Then MAK 4T NXT( semi-syn) for again 1300kms. And now MOTUL 3000 15W50 Mineral oil. And use castrol 20W50 for Topup. Last week I went for a long trip ( 500kms in a day) and found motul mineral is not suitable for crusing. My top speed is less. But with MAK my top speed was very easy to attain. But bike was heating much. So please stick to bajaj until you cover 1000kms. And donot use synthetic so soon. Wait until 5000kms. The biggest problem for me is MOTUL 5100/7100 is not available in my place. So if anybody knowing about MOTUL in Mangalore, Please inform. Thank you

Did u check for the same result with another pulsar's TPS? Mine also has fluctuations even at idle by +/-200 rpm. Fiddling around with the wiring can make you lose warranty. Watch what you say to the SVC Mechanic...gud luck. Btw, my bike still shows signs of slight power loss during soft acceleration.. Have to check its top speed for confirmation..

Today I visited the SVC and Checked the bike with a new CDI. The bike was normal and top speed was also same. So I again shifted to my original CDI. The TPS ( reed switch) cable was not in stock. I just came to know that the varying RPM is only the specialty of a pulsar. I checked almost five pulsars there and found the same. Now that is not an issue. I better manage to live with it. I actually have some other issue. I will post it in HELP section.

as you mentioned that you were riding with a pillion, i believe that to be a major reason for not being able to go beyond 115kmph.
check the speed again when riding single.

as for varying RPM, i am a bit confused cos i never had this idling issue on my 180. i have just resurrected 2007 200dtsi. which did have erratic idling, i had to change the coil and cdi( as the previous owner had put local, plus, the cdi actually gave up while coming back from office one fine day) though this i believe was not the cause for erratic. it was better, but not to my liking. engine did seem to miss a beat here and there

i had already checked for air leaks around carb, valve clearance was checked and rechecked and the bike was running great, cold starts were perfect, no dramas at the red light while starting from stop, but i still wasnt convinced.

last option then, carb replacement!
but decided to give a last try to tune the carb

some carb adjustment and voila..
all has been smooth since, just perfect idling.
this is where things get confusing, the service manual suggests 2.5 +_ 2 turns for volume control (VC)screw, so that means a max of about 4.5 turns out
and i was running all sort of stting on these lines for weeks, finally decided to take it beyond 4.5 turns and ended up in the sweet spot of
5.5 to 6.5 turns on VC screw and trust me, the idling couldnt be better.
it has that perfect rhythm.
i beleive the reason for this could be that our bikes are being tuned more for economy thus stifling the engine.

the spark plugs are brownish in color, no engine overheating either.

you can check/try this too.

1)ride your bike for 4-5 kms, carry a small screwdriver.
2)shut the engine off. screw the volume control screw all the way in.( the small on left side, towards the engine)
and count how many turns it turns in completely, i believe it will be 3.5 to 4 full turns or 7 - 8 half turns.

3)now bring it back/out the same number of turns previously screwed in and start you engine, (i know i am using too much screwed word here, but cant seem to find a substitute , clockwise and anticlock wise confuse me )

4)slowly in half/quarter turns screw it outward.

5)Remember the counts at all time, i usually one it on paper of mobile notepad.

6)once you screw it outwards you will notice the rpm rising, at this time keep adjusting the idle screw to lower the rpm.

7)if bike starts to stall turn the VC screw inwards.

repeate steps 4 through 7.

i have fiddled with this for long, always kept a small screwdriver in my riding jacket hidden somewhere( still do) on the way to office and back and tried all settings from 4.5 to 6.5 turns.

6.5 did seem to overheat the engine, so i found peace at 6 full turn or was it 5.5 (not sure on that, will check and edit later).

and you should find a sweet spot. trust me.

as for 180, its 2003 so was running on 112.5 main jet, changed the carb with bs29 ug3 back in 2011 which has 117.5 main jet.
180 is currently running on 4.5 turns or 7 half turn as service manual advises. again no sign of engine stifling and smooth idling, no overheating and same brown/tan spark plug.

i personally dont recommend this to others, but since you are curious/keen to resolve the eratic idle , i just thought it was worth a mention.

cdi or coil going bad so early on a bike is a rare occurance, but i would advise you to get the valve clearance checked/adjusted even before carb fiddling.

Oh yes, before any confusion arises, just a *statutory word of adivce* :

"The process described here is just an attempt to get the idle right
and it wont increase the top end performance of the bike in any way.
Tuning a bike for idle is different than tuning it for performance( which requires rejetting).
And these points above are just for experimenting to get good/ healthy idle, thus its just for Tuning for idle.

I have personally experienced noticable overheating beyond 6 - 6.5 - 7 full turns but noticed and
corrected in time, say within 5-10 kms of ride on empty roads.
Please Be Advised, and always calculate and remember the original number of turns for VC screw setting, so that you can revert back to it easily "

Ride safe
