Yes you should drain any old oil, be it mineral, synthetic, semi synthetic, before you fill in new oil. You can drain your old semi synthetic using the drain bolt(how much ever drains out of the drain bolt first and then with a bit of rocking is sufficient amount to drain out) and fill in the new Synthetic oil. No issues.

so,i guess it is something related to petcock?..
May be ur reserve tube is bit higher than normal . We had a discussion here regarding reserve-to-reserve mileage and we all were were confused.never got more than 1.5 lt in reserve.lets see what other extreme owners say.

even after chain tightening the sound is present....dunno what may be the reason..
Open the chain cover CAP and rotate the wheel. See if the chain motion is linear or its Up nd down.maybe it needs alignment. There are markings on both side axle adjustment nut(aluminum colored),see if those markings are same on both sides.adjust if necessary.

        1. Check the clutch play. Take it to an experienced hand. Maybe the free play has been increased and hence while in gear, there are issues while cranking.

        2. 1.5Lt reserve in xtreme? In our Hunks we have 2.2 Lts of usable reserve and I have done ~130 kms on reserve!

Regarding the oil filter that you posted a few threads up, AFAIK, there is no oil filter in our Hunks (xtreme-no idea); it is a simple oil strainer! no?

From the past two days, I'm having a tick tick sound along with the engine noise. It increases with rev and when I press the clutch, it vanishes. Is this the tappet noise (i read online and the sound people explained as is similar to mine) or is there something else. I am also getting the smell of burnt fuel since this problem has occured.

There is no visible smoke from the exhaust pipe.

Ill have to get my bike back to service again and guys let me know the severity of the situation I'm in right now. The bike just feels too unhealthy to even ride...at each gear the bike rattles and repels on my revs. Its just hard to drag it above 50kmph as the engine screams and the handlebars vibrate hard.
Just send a complaint to HERO motors and see the result. Its no use running after the useless service center. First send a complaint and see the interest they take to solve your problems.

Tappet issues, less engine life(compared to old generation Honda's), less mileage, poor brakes, vibrations, poor headlights etc..... I think Hero'll have to stop production of Hunk/Xtreme as well along with IMPULSE!
This is the most immature comment that i have heard.
          1. Tappet noise is not a problem. It occurs because of improper adjustment. If the tappet is set perfectly then there is no need of tappet adjustment. The most frequent tappet adjustment is required if you are running rich as it will cause carbon deposits on valve and thus the tappet gap will increase and also due to improper closing of valves your engine will loose compression.
          2. Less mileage is caused by improper tuning of carb and improper running in. As i have mentioned before hero engines take longer to completely become free so naturally running in increases. Also tine the carburettors properly for proper mixture settings. Also some batch has valve leakage problems so get it opened and polished. Your mileage and vibration problem will vanish.
          3. Brakes are not poor but far better but it is the service which destroys them. How to service the front brakes, no one knows. similarly rear brakes service no one knows. Soon i will post a DIY on changing brake pads and shoes for benefit of all.
          4. Headlights- My extreme has good lights. Be sure to adjust the focus so that it doesn't fall too far or near or you will feel headlight useless. Also fit a auxiliary light on leg-guard from AUTOPAL and connect it to battery from ignition and your problem will be solved.
          5. Vibrations- check engine mounting bolts and also check tappets. If your engine is loosing compression your engine will vibrate. If engine is having excess compression because of head carbon then also your bike will vibrate.
And most here think that HERO is crap and HONDA is like god. Not here but most people i meet thinks so. We, INDIANS, have a mentality that anything foreign is good and indian products are useless.
And by quality if you think that the same quality as splendor then i am sorry, you will not get the same quality in present generation bikes. When i bought my extreme i very well knew that i will not get the same quality as my JOY.
Do you think HONDA makes more quality, then i am sorry you do not know the truth. The unicorn which has same engine as hunk/extreme although a little less power also starts to smoke at 40k. And i am sure as my mechanic does most of the work.
And SHINE smokes like two strokes in 35k. One unicorn had its bore piston changed at 40k in service center and after 7 days it got seized. Then my mechanic re-bore it and it is running good.
The reason for this quality decrease is we, the customers, because we want value for money and not quality. We want more number of features in less price and it shows in quality.
When i bought my joy in 2001 it cost me 46k on-road, that too it has a small brake drum, no fuel meter, no rear cowl, no headlight visor. But when my father bought spl+ in 2010 it cost Rs.42k on-road that too it having front bigger drum, fuel meter, rear cowl, headlight visor to name a few. taking inflation into account do you think the price has decreased without quality taking hit.
I am going to post help for ATHUL and others can take clue from it.

The bikes are still good but not what they used to maybe.

          Yes, Top1 is Fully Synthetic.
We actually need to add only 900ML, not the whole 1L. But 100ML is ok, no big deal. You don't get oil at 1.2L a pack anyway. :P

Replacing oil filter, yes, you need to remove the crank case for that. Check your owner's manual for detailed procedure. 1.2L maybe after all the oil is drained if you open the crank case. If you drain using the drain bolt, you'll need only 900ML.
The bikes are same but we think that the quality has decreased.

Change the petrol tap. Heck, no need to change as why to fiddle with bike and also it is good as you are getting more reserve capacity.
from the rear an occasional metal crunching sound is heard during corners and under load ...it is still present after cleaning and lubing the chain....
Check chain tension. If the chain is too tight then also you will hear the sound.

Any body having any problem post here and i will be able to help. If ASC are not listening then just send a mail to HERO and see.

And for driving away any mis-conception even the HONDA bikes are suffering from many problems. My mechanic recently opened a SHINE with 40k on ODO as it was smoking heavily and there was CON-rod sound. Even in CBR thread you can see members complaining of poor quality. So be rest assured that HERO is providing better quality. After separation from HONDA it has changed some of vendors like Bore kit to USHA, Chain sprocket kit to diamond and many other similar things.

          • Hunk Mileage !!

Yesterday I had gone to a HMC showroom for some inquiry. And this is what I found!! (acc to SIAM)

Those getting any close to this on their Hunks should know that they are extracting the best that they can! For those unlucky ones like me getting in the range of 40-45 should take it that those mileage figures are under 'standard test conditions'!!

One possible reason for vibrations and loss of compression , the exhaust is connected (bolted) to the bore , just below the petrol tank , its easily visible . there is a black rubber shoe/washer/spacer (whatever you call it) that holds the exhaust pipe , just check if its tight . Threads are visible on one bolt and the other one is completely tight ,this is normal .

By any chance if either of these bolts are loose , there can be a loss of compression and you can hear "tick tick" sound and it increases when you rev the engine.

Like your Joy, I have a Spendor which has run 1.1 lakh kms, I would've adjusted its tappets 2 times atmost!
                But like you said, quality!

I don't think my statement is immature, considering that Hero's competitors are churning out good products and improving.
Also, Hero had mentioned that they'd phase out Impulse as it uses Honda Tech :O
Hunk/Xtremes sharing the same engine as in Impulse, I seriously doublt they'd rule out Hunk/Xtreme!

Six years since CBZ Xtreme launched, still its suffering from many issues.
Look at Pulsar's how far they've progressed from the time they were introduced in early 2000's, a good instance of continuous improvement.
Look at Apache - they had a 150cc version in the beginning which was not a success, then they launched RTR 160 - wow its the fastest indian in 150 segment (spare CBR/R15), similar mileage as of our Hunk/Xtremes, best brakes etc
These are Indian manufacturers who parted from their Japanese counter parts long back and they are able to give good products. And our Hero had Honda's backing till recent times, but they did not dare to research/experiment and solve issues and give better products

And regarding your points on your Joy,Splendor, Unicorn, Shine - I completely agreee with you. And yes, the quality ahs degraded, which was what I was trying to say.

Also, find my views regarding your points above inline.

You are right about it vibrating more than unicorn but the vibration is not so bad that we can call it. It is because of aggressive cam profile. Also ride a unicorn and extreme. Just rip it and see the difference, from 80 kph till its top speed hunk/ extreme pulls like crazy.
And regarding mileage it is not 10 kpl below unicorn but 5 kpl. If you are getting less than 50-55 kpl then there is some problem in the bike and find a good mechanic. Its no use blaming hero if your bike is showing problem. Its the mechanic who destroys the bike.
Regarding pulsars improving, i do not find any improvement over the old model. Yes there is some improvement but still it doesn't feel as good as extreme/hunk.
Regarding apache, yes it has developed but mileage is less than all 150 cc and vibration are aplenty.

Brakes in HONDA are progressive unlike apache and pulsar. Also the steering geometry sharpens the brakes. There is no issues in my extreme. The digital model extreme/hunks have almost all issues solved.
And regarding fastest 150, apache 160 has a true top speed of 118 kph and extreme has a true top speed of 114 kph. Since it is a short stroke it revs freely. Ours is a square bore and thus it revs lazily.
And regarding HONDA'S backing, instead honda was restricting hero and this was one of the major reason for hero and honda parting.
All those manufacturers who have separated from japanese counterpart took almost 5-6 years for getting a better product.

                  • There are a lot of other factors that we need to consider while commenting the quality of Hero bikes .

Some of it wont be just manufacturing defects or engineering defects.

If an organisation like HERO has found an engineering mistake or a design mistake , then certainly they will make sure to rectify it .

Other pulsar / apache /unicorn owners do face such niggling issues too. That does not mean Bajaj/tvs/honda are cheap 2 bit companies !

Coming to top speed , yes apache r15 etc etc may be faster than xtreme , but how many times do you utilize that top speed ? Dont tell me that you rip at 110-118kmph everyday

All of it done with a pillion - distance covered not sure but odo was showing close to 1350Kms but for many miles the speedo needle was not working so i am pretty sure i breached the 1500kms mark.

The state highways i cvould only keep 60-70 km/hr on national highways i kept it just below 80Km/r - with the unicorn sprocket the bike was cruising at 80km/hr at 6000RPM if i remember correctly - i will never go back to stock sprocket for highway riding again .

Through drain bolt you can drain the 900ml of oil, after that few kicks using kick starter and tilting the bike will drain another 100ml oil,Be gentle with the kick starter. Also make sure with the dipstick that the oil level is between max and min levels,Oil above max level will cause damage to engine.

Replacing oil filter, yes, you need to remove the crank case for that. Check your owner's manual for detailed procedure.
How old is the bike? Oil filter needs cleaning if either the bike is new,ie after runin period or if the bike is 25000 or 30000kms old.

If you drain using the drain bolt, you'll need only 900ML.
                        Yes ^^^+1

You have to drain the old oil before poring in new oil,Nothing will happen if SS oil mix with FS oil.All are oils. Even if you drain old oil, small amount of oil will remain in the crank case and its doesnt matter, you can pour in new oil without any worries.

                          • @sarbanoxley- Congrats on your trip.
I am glad that my suggestion of changing the bore and re-tuning the engine has benefited you immensely.
Your plug color indicates your mixture is perfect. Do not fiddle with mixture screw more as the present setting is perfect.

As i have repeatedly told everybody that if you have any problem then just post it here and i will help you.
I have experimented so much on bikes that i have seen almost every problem that anybody has seen.
So i am glad to help my fellow bikers.

Let me tell you why i joined this forum.

I have been browsing this forum from almost 2008 but from my profile you will see i joined in april 2010. Previously i was browsing as a guest and also at that time i didn't had broadband at home. So i use to browse from laptops of friends in college campus as our campus had WI FI.
But as my interest in bikes increased and also knowledge i started helping friends and relatives in restoring their bikes performance and looks like new. If i didn't get time then i will send them to my mechanic and have a word with my mechanic over phone.
But in 2010 i saw that most of the biking brothers here face from different problems and thus i joined the forum to help my brothers. So i am always ready to help you and in splendor thread you can see i have helped many members of their trouble. So i am always ready to help as i have a hobby of restoring friends and relatives bikes. Similarly i will help each and everyone here, just send a PM to me and i will help you.

I almost forgot to mention that on 14th september my CBZ completed one year, the ownership experience will be up soon as i am searching for an article and after i find it i will post the ownership experience.

                              Hey guys!
I too a Hero Fan Boy, chill!
I know that TVS/BAJAJ has niggling issues, thats why I prefer a Spendor over a Discover, a Karizma over a P220 and my Hunk over Pulsar!
I don't want Hero to have similar niggling issues like them, and always wanted Hero to come up with better products especially in 150 seg where they once failed with the legendary CBZ Classic.
Xtreme/Hunk were definitely better answers from Hero, but lot of room for improvement for sure!
And ofcourse I like my Hunk
