Hi Well in that case you should Clean your chain then put the burnt oil and then apply Littile Grease, keep ur bike alon for 1 hour and then ride it. The sound which comes after this- you will love it and bike becomes smooth. try it once and every 500KM
used engine oil is not recommended as they contain metal parts - grease too attracts dust so better use 90 grade oil .

Hello Sarbanoxley, I have done exactly the same 1000 kms after top overhaul of my Unicorn.
I went for rebore job as I can able to get original 0.25mm size Usha piston rings and the reboring guy was well known to me with accurate boring machine.

Partially I have adopted Motoman's method(taken upto 8000 rpms at initial few kms.) for break-in. Now my bike returns 58kmpl with no over heating issues at speeds between 60~70 kmph.

For your heating issues check the tuning.

Where can i get that 90 grade oil,coz i feel all the time my chain has been lubricated by either used engine oil or grease, not even once by kerosine or anythng like that. may be that the reason behind uneven slackness of my chain ???

Thats a very good mileage .

Was told by sibun to wait till the bike completes 1K kms before tunin g the carb - so going to do it tomorrow a complete carb service .

After i cleaned the chain 2 days back i messed up the cover installation part - the top cover was making contact with the chain and the alloy was getting hot very hot on short rides - thankfully i noticed this after 20 kms and took it to SC where the mech set it right .

Now today after i changed the front sprocket to unicorn sprocket i made sure the chain is not making any contact with the cover - rotated the rear wheel after installing the cover and listened to any kind of noise from inside the chain cover - i could hear nothing and the wheel was moving freely - satisfied i took a short test drive inside kanchipuram town for 6kms only - when i got back i touched the rear alloy and it was very HOT - i am confused now did i do something wrong or its normal for the alloy to get this hot

Go to any big petrol bunk or shops that sell engine oil - ask for gear oil 90 grade they will give you the bottle - check its grade and avoid castrol brand - will cost you less than Rs100 - will last you more than a year - mine is servo gear oil HP 90 and its still not empty after 2 yrs lol .

Hhahaha good to see the "like" feature on the forum ....big thanks to xbhp for adding this much needed feature .

By alloy do you mean the wheel hub that's getting hot ? That usually happens from brake pad rubbing the drum , either from a misfit or with lots rear brake usage/brake riding . Rarely from wheel bearings or misaligned wheel axle etc . So check those .

I didnt touch the hub just the spokes of the alloy and i couldnt hold on to it for more than 10 sec. - it was that hot - ok this is getting complicated will take it to the SC tomorrow and get it sorted no other way .

The tyre has no wobble and i did use a lot of rear brake due to traffic inside the town .

I need to get this alloy heating issue and do the carb service/tune soon as i have a 500Km journey to take this week .

This sprockets and chain are 25,100 kms old and a good part of it was through rough village roads. The only lubricant used is Castrol Premium Longlife lithium based NLGI 2.5/3 grease mixed with Castrol Axle 140 (formerly EP 140) oil.
The chain or sprockets were not cleaned even once throughout these 25,100 kms.
I cannot understand why it is advised to not use Castrol oil as lubricant. May be part of the common aversion towards Castrol products among xBhp-ians, spread by some ‘gurus’.

I think the heat on the tyre too is causing it. Check the hub and alloy after a long ride. The hub remains colder than the alloys. Same if nitrogen is filled in the tire.

My dad also has a 1998 model Splendor, still running strong and gives my Karizma a run for its money in terms of maintenance. He has clocked 2L kms and the engine has not been opened yet.

                      His mantra:-
                      1. Wash the bike twice a week.
                      2. Never let the bike dry in the sun, rather wipe it dry with cloth.
                      3. Polish it with waxpol.
                      4. Replace engine oil every 1800-2k kms.
                      5. Never park in direct sunlight. (can be avoided 95% of the time)
                      6. Lube the chain every 500-600 kms
                      7. Keep tires properly inflated.
                      8. Ride the bike to 75% of its potential. Though he does hit 80-85 kmph once in a while, he rides in the 60-70 kmph zone all the time.
(we can manage these speeds in my city - Bokaro, Jharkhand)
Thanks divya. your dads mantras are simply best
I hope i could maintain like wise.

Another thing I just want to know, wheather polishing bikes resulting in colour evaporation??
I really can't define myself without my bike

you can get 90 grade oil in most petrol pumps , HP or IOL etc . you can even buy an oil dispenser for 100 bucks from a local hardware shop. clean the chain with kerosene or even diesel . Once cleaned put it back , lubricate it .

By any chance have you removed the chain casing ?

Yes right, you can even ask for gear oil for Yamaha RX 100/135 for easy understanding. Its the same SAE 90 if I'm not wrong.
