• re: CBZ xtreme / Hunk

My hero hunk has done 6500kms till now.
My bike vibrates from 4500 rpm till redline.
Vibration is irritating from 5000rpm to 7000 rpm.
from 7000-9000 rpm vibes are pretty less and revvs like crazy. When it was new it had more vibes but decreased as i piled up more kms.
Is there anyway to remove vibes from this bike? am i missing something.

Additional info:
My bikes A/F mixture is pretty good, tappets are adjusted as per spec. tire pressure 29/31.

Any kind of help will be extremely helpful

Engine head threading? You mean the threads that hold the head cover or the head itself?

If it's the head cover, you shouldn't lose compression at all. Also, you can still tighten to the point just before where it loosens again. I ran with this setup for well over 3000km with no issues apart from slight oil leakage.

I think psr, sibun or Pinaki should be able to help you.

Did you set the valve clearance at when the piston was at TDC?

I did everything as per the guide and got the bike to work again but oil is leaking in sprays. I sealed it with gasket sealant. I was talking about the threads both of them. Apparently they were over tightened when the gasket was replaced. I can go like this for some time but will have it rethreaded as soon as possible. Will also probably sell this damn bike after fixing everything and get a fuel injected one like Fz v2 or will probably buy an extreme. Money lost be damned.

How was the tappet setting before you adjusted them?

And over tightening is something that led me to strip the head cover threads as well and also break the nipple of the front brake calliper. :P

And while I understand your frustration, just try to get all the issues sorted out before you decide to buy a new bike.

My bike has returned mileage of <40 for over 2 and a half years. And even SVC people claimed the bike only gives 39. But with the people in this community and some trial and error, I now get mileage of close to 50kmpl. Don't lost heart. You'll get there. Soon.

And in all this time, my bike has a good list of mods. A 165cc bore with headwork, a 15T front sprocket, a naked chain case, a fully DC headlamp system, R15 handle grips, FZ front brake master cylinder. Yet, it returns 50kmpl.

There is always a solution. Please be patient.

Exhaust had very little clearance about .04mm inlet was alright. And thank you for all your encouraging words. I need to ride a lot nowadays so the mileage problem is really bothering me. Will change a few more parts though and bribe someone at svc to check it thoroughly for any other hidden issues.

I think that the head mounting studs are what is being referred to as having lost the thread due to over tightening. Problem with most mechanics ,Both road side and ASC, is that they seldom use Torque wrench to tighten the engine bolts to specification, leading to problems. The studs are replaceable and can be bought from Spares center. the CBZ has a reliable and strong engine. A Fi engine has it's own tale of woes like Fuel pump failure, clogged injectors etc., So getting the engine studs replaced and tightening the head bolts with Torque wrench is the solution to the problem.

Sir ji I need some help here. I was talking about the holes where the screws in the engine head goes. Also I am getting a mileage of 35. previously it was 40. I found a leaking pipe and fixed it, performance is also better after this adjustment but mileage woes remain. Chain slack, air filter etc are all alright. Is there something else I should search for?

*I meant engine head cover.

You can try adjusting the AFR screw by 90 degrees Clockwise (1/4 the turn) and record the result...
Stalwarts like Mr.Sibun can guide correctly with proper method

It will be helpful if you tell us what all things you checked and rectified for improving the mileage.
Unlike Xtreme owners, most of the Hunk owners are unhappy with mileage I think

Nothing out of the ordinary, SatSon.

1) Use the CPR8EA9 plug only. Not some fancy iridium plug which isn't compatible with the bike.
2) Change the Air Filter and the Spark Plug regularly. Every 10,000km will do well. Both combined won't cost more than Rs. 250 after all
3) Tune the carb as per Sibun's method. My mileage shot up after this in particular. The sweet spot is usually between 1.5 and 1.8 turns I guess
4) Tappets, bolded because it is extremely important. The engine seems to be very sensitive to the tappet adjustments. Stick to 0.07 for the inlet and 0.10 for the exhaust. I'll get to why not 0.08 and 0.12 in a bit.
5) Drive Chain: The people in the SVC over tighten the chain causing multiple issues ranging from tight gear shifts to a rubbing feeling near the footpegs.

Besides these, I am thinking the 15T sprocket in the front is definitely helping, as is the extra torque from the Race Concepts 165cc bore.

Now, why 0.07 and 0.10? Because, I set my tappets to 0.08 and 0.12 today, because I had new rocker arms. As soon as I started the bike, I could hear tappet noise. Called sibun, who asked me to switch over to 0.07mm and 0.10 setting, which is what I used when I had worn out rocker arms. I set the exhaust valve to 0.10 but left the inlet as it is at 0.08.

Result?

Ridiculously loud tappet noise. I rode the bike for around 3km and the dreaded tappet noise started. Looks like I'll need to wake up at 5:30AM tomorrow only to set the tappets because if the noise for a 6km ride was intolerable, I do not want to imagine what the bike will sound like after my daily 17km one way travel.

So after tappet adjustment mileage has increased to 37. But one thing is still bothering me that there is very little increase in rpm when I tune the carb and no matter what I do, rpm is never constant. It keeps fluctuating even when the bike is idling, whether hot or cold rpm keeps fluctuating +/- 100. I suspect air leakage. How do I check for leaking air from the carb?

I have seen your problem, but didn't get time to respond as it will be long post. So i was late. But i will post the details and how to get back on mileage and performance. But wait for 1-2 days and i will post details summarising your all problems and providing solutions once and for all.
