  • Re: Honda Dio, Activa and Aviator

    I'm in a confusion here.
My Honda Dio 2012 has Honda Authorized Service Center Engine & Gear box Oil(Mineral) which was changed once at 2k, now scooter is about to hit 4000kms mark.
Now, Should I go for a semi synthetic oil like Shell Advance AX7 10W40 or directly go for fully synthetic oil like Shell Advance Ultra 10W40?.
Some of my friends told me that I should run the scooter with Semi Synthetic Oil for about 1k or 2k then switch to Shell Advance Ultra 10W40 Fully Synthetic ?
I'm going to change my oil tomorrow & I'm confused :-(
    Please Help me.

Firstly, i would recommend Motul 10w30 Jaso MB for scooter because 10w30 is recommended oil grade.
Though it is difficult to find it.
yes, you can go for shell semisynthetic or synthetic 10w40, being w40 it will offer better protection for coming summer.
Start with semisynthetic and see if the engine is happy with it.
For the gearbox get SAE 90 grade oil. 500ml packs are easily available. Only fill required quantity (120ml).
Your drained oil may come out clean so you need to replace it once in a year or 10000kms or as you wish.

        1. Stick to the stock oil from the ASC (preferably get it changed in front of you and from the sealed plastic bottle instead of from the big drums, and make sure it is the JASO MB oil, i think it comes in a golden colored bottle, the other oil is for motorbikes which is JASO MA/MA2) & ensure the oil is changed ever 2000km approx.

        2. If you want to switch over, my recommendations would be :
        a. Castrol Gearless Scooter oil (Available in both 20w40 and 10w30) - This is a JASO MB oil specific to gearless scooters.
        b. Shell AX5 (yellow bottle) - again available in both 20w40 and 10w30
        c. Motul also i believe has a scooter specific oil in the JASO MB grade. If you can find this, it should also be good enough

a & b are from personal experience and are very good oils. Pl do not waste your money on AX7, synthetic oils.. Just ensure whatever oil you use, it is replaced every 2000km.
For the gearbox stick to the EP90 gear oil (buy a half litre bottle from a petrol bunk..costs around 120rs now) - and you can safely change the gear oil once a year & it hardly takes 120ml.

Well.. they probably want you to spend more - ax7 should be ok i guess - but the best grade would be a jaso mb for these scoots.. As i said, i found the AX5 20w40 to be really good comparing to the earlier 20w40 oem oil (which is no longer sold by honda, they have shifted to 10w30)
if you have the extra money to spend and want to experiment with different oils and learn/feel how they perform.. that's fine and your personal choice - do let us know your feedback

Alright guys, I got Honda Dio's oil changed to Shell Advance AX7 Semi Synthetic from default Honda engine oil (engine oil is used in Honda ASC).
& I got Shell Advance AX7 SS from Shell Petrol Bunk in Nayandahalli, Bangalore.
              It costed me Rs. 375/-.
I was asked to scratch a Scratch & Win Offer Card, got a Key Chain .
Bagged some Sticker Goodies too. .
Then after Engine Oil change at Shell, I went to my good ol' mechanic to update gear box oil as Shell doesn't change gear box oil but my mechanic said, "No need to change sir, it is not that bad". But I will update it after 1K or so.
Then my focus turned to Rustling Sound Issue.
I asked my mechanic to remove all the bad residual grease in variator & on rollers, observed the best quality BANDO Drive Belt . He wiped it clean & re installed Cluth Plate Assembly.
Thanks to s1d, Lokesh027 etc for helping me sort out the problem.
I took the scooter for a ride it's engine is now as smooth as butter . Let's see how it turns out after running a few more kilometers.
Every Xbhpian who helped me with their reviews about Engine Oils, Thank you.

Thanks for the update...According to my experience this oil is really good. I have used this oil for 4 times. My activa is 2005 model and 20w40 Honda engine oil was used till 25000kms. After this I started experimenting with various oil. Used 10w30 but it doesn't hold good and engine consumes oil and revs higher ( like loosing compression), had few benefits like superior acceleration. So in order to bridge gap between both grades 10w40 was the perfect one.
Past this winter season I had used AX7 and now I have changed to castrol activ scooter 20w40 on 2nd March for upcoming summer. But now because I am using 12g rollers engine feels heavy and sluggish somewhat like using 20w50 oil. So today I got some cheap quality rollers to do some experiments. These are 10.5g each, came in a loose packing, costed a total Rs.40 for all 6 pieces. I will try both combinations and will update soon.

Hope you filled up only 750-800 ml and not the entire 1 litre !! If you did fill up 1 litre, then remove 200ml out ASAP !

I filled up about 900ml as told by service guys at Shell. Remaining oil is in the bottle itself.

The recommended capacity is only 800ml. And you had even checked on shell lube match which showed 0.8L - do educate the guys at the shell station.
And drain out the excess. I once filled up 900ml (castrol activ 4t which came in a 900ml can) because i assumed the bottle was 800ml & only at the next oil changed when i saw an empty can at my mech that i realized it was 900ml, but it dint cause me any problem.
                        But you never know..

I went to my mechanic & told Shell person had filled 900ml of engine oil, then my mechanic said "It's totally fine, engine oil shouldn't be less than the optimum level but it shouldn't be too much as well. You shouldn't put 1 litre of engine oil, but 900ml is fine. Engine felt smoother", after he took a test drive. But to be on the safer side, the inquired with other local mechanics, they said it was fine too.
I will take some more test drives today myself & see if I can observe any differences.
                          Thanks for the concern s1d.

You should not overfill, never exceed 800ml. You might have noticed in past that ASC always return the 800ml oil can with some 50-100ml left inside. I can say that they don't drain completely by tilting the vehicle, as a result some 50ml old oil is left inside.
So now check oil level with help of dipstick. If its above the marked range then remove the excess oil out.
                            Anything excess is always harmful.

Excess oil will create higher pressure and make the oil pump work harder which can cause oil leakage from bore.

I went back to Shell Petrol Bunk again today & pointed out their error, they considered the issue & were sorry for the inconvenience.
I made a point to check the Engine Oil Level & it was at RED MARK :banghead:
WHOOOAAA , then made no delay & asked them to remove 100ml ASAP.
Later took scoot home & checked the Engine Oil Level it was at GREEN.
Now I have total peace of mind.
Thinking of going a test run again early morning tomorrow.
