Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S
Replace the chain set immediately. Even before you complete reading this message. It is outrightly dangerous to move your bike in this condition of the chain.Originally posted by msandeep27 View Post

Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S
I spoke to one of the yamaha service center they just sprayed the chain spray and asked me to ride .It seems i have to change the chain sprocket only. But i am still feeling that may be if i clean it it will work fine. But not sure about it what all parameters do i need to check in order to be sure. If you need any more images as well i can post it as you request.Originally posted by muztariq View PostReplace the chain set immediately. Even before you complete reading this message. Even if you clean and use, it will be of no help. The chain can break at any point of time without prior warning.Originally posted by msandeep27 View PostI spoke to one of the yamaha service center they just sprayed the chain spray and asked me to ride .It seems i have to change the chain sprocket only. But i am still feeling that may be if i clean it it will work fine. Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S
msandeep27 The condition of the chain is very worse. The safe and sane thing to do is to change the chain and sprocket. I will tell you an incident that happened to my friend who also has a FZ-S. He never took good care of his chain set. Once in a while he used to get them lubed by the mechanic. He also forgot to do that for some 1000 kms as a result the chain had lot of slack and jumped from the rear sprocket and jammed the wheel at 70 kms/h speed. He sustained collar bone fracture, 4 bones broken in the leg and lots of skin damage.
The reason we insist on proper maintenance of the chain set is that it is the power transmitting part of the bike. The engine power is transmitted to the wheels only by the chain set, if it is no properly lubed or major wear in the chain set could lead to disastrous consequences.
It is our humble request please change the chain sprocket set as we do care for you.
Cheers,
Mathews

Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S
Always keep the bike chain optimaly tight, motul is the best chain lube, chain should be cleaned every 600 to 700 kms for normal conditions and if you are riding in dusty conditions the the cleaning interval should be halved of normal conditions.Originally posted by msandeep27 View PostAfter reading such a story I am not getting courage to get it cleaned. I will replace it by tomorrow itself. Please tell me what is the best chain lube motul or any other company and at what interval I should do it

Zero, is my hands on experience with O-Ring type chains.Originally posted by devils_friend View Post... FZ has O-Ring type chain.
What's the cheap & best lube for O-Ring type chains?Originally posted by accuengineer View Post... ...
We've EP-90 GearOil for Conventional type chains.
Edit: found a DIY on O-Ring chains
What's the advantage of O-Ring type chains over conventional ones?
Edit 2:Originally posted by nadz11.ns View PostChange the chain-sprocket set. Recommended to change at 12k kms as per manual ...
- O-Ring chains ought to last longer than Conventional roller chains.
- O-Ring chains need minimal lubrication. I don't think EP-90 & Grease can be used on O-Rings chains, as these attract dirt & hence cause adverse effects.
- Once warmed up O-Ring chains are as effective as conventional roller chains.
- Conventional roller chains stretch/wear much faster compared to O-Ring chains; as O-Ring chains come with lube-locked within from factory.
That said, isn't 12,000 kms too much shorter life for an O-Ring chain?Last edited by SparKot; 06-30-2014, 09:28 PM.There is no honest path to prosperity - KoKa

SparKot I would not say cheap but it surely does the job. I use Diamond chain spray - Rs. 120 per can. it lasts for about 4-5 sprays at an interval of 300 kms.

No, it isn't short.Originally posted by SparKot View PostThat said, isn't 12,000 kms too much shorter life for an O-Ring chain?
Under normal conditions and normal maintenance, the chain would last for 15-17k kms. With no conditioning, it can fail as early as 7-8k kms and with timely/early cleaning, the life can be increased drastically. I had changed the previous chain set at 12k and it was like new and now the second one is now close to 17k kms and there isn't much wear n tear. I always do cleaning and lubing at every 200-250kms.
As for O-ring chains, see these are closed type chains and have internal lubrication (like in case of bearings). But what about outer surface ? It would require lubrication for operation over sprockets. That's where chain lubes/gear oils come.
You should search for a thread maybe in general discussion on O-ring chains. Many others and I have explained the difference between the chain types.
Also, chain life depends upon many other factors like environmental conditions, riding style and many other factors. This is the reason no two bikes will have the same chain-sprocket life.
Ride safe and have fun.

Nadeem

Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S
Just invest in a good chain set. It comes in 1200 to 1300 and roadside mechanic takes 150 rs as labor.Originally posted by msandeep27 View PostAfter reading such a story I am not getting courage to get it cleaned. Just keep lubricating the chain with any 20w40 oil. Even 15w40 or 20w50 will do. EP 90 gear oil is also good. The more you can lubricate the chain the better life it gets.

Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S
Hello everyone,
Facing chain issues for sometime now. The chain becomes tight. Had my mechanic adjust it twice now. He says the chain is nearing the end of its life. So it's tightening up. I'm not able to understand how that could happen. Also my gearshifts have become tight. The mechanic says its because of the tight chain. Can that be possible? I checked my engine oil and it seems fine. Bike has completed 14700kms in 2 years.
In these 2 years I've tried to clean and lube the chain as many times as I could. Although sometimes there would be a gap of almost 1k kms before I could lube again.
Anyway I'm attaching some pics of my chain. Does the chain look like it should be replaced?
Any suggestions welcome!!
Cheers!!Your pair of feet can tire you... Your pair of wheels can never tire you...

Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S
From the first pic I see that, the nut isn't at the last setting. The chain might be tightening up due to misalignment of the wheel. Nut should be at same position on both sides, check the same. Since you have already covered 14700kms, it is time for you to change the chain set. Hard gearshifts maybe due to worn out clutch plates, replace them if required.Originally posted by arijitmaniac View PostHello everyone,

Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S
It is a very simple mistake that all the mechanics do. They loosen the main nut and just turn one or two turns of the chain slack adjuster nut in one side and forget about the other side. then they feel the tension in the chain. Then for name sake turn the other side chain slack adjuster. Then tighten the main nut.
You can DIY. Just observe whether both the nut and the bolt side are in the same line. If not adjust it. Once aligned, check the slack of the chain( 30-40mm)
Now after adjustment, use a tooth brush and push the chain upward from the bottom. Now slowly rotate the back tyre. If the alignment is correct then the tightness on the chain should be even.. If not readjust.
I found one more culprit while changing my chain sprocket set. The shock rear drive hub(Sl no-6 in the photo)
Can also be the culprit as there will be more play leading to miss alignment of the chain sprocket leading to tightness in the chain.

Mathews

Cheerz!!Thanks a lot for the suggestions. Yes the shock drive was changed recently. I had given the bike for greasing of the swingarm pivots and wheel bearings. Thats when the mechanic showed me that the rear shock drive rubber was gone.Originally posted by accuengineer View PostIt is a very simple mistake that all the mechanics do. Okay so let me follow the simplest of procedures first i.e. check the wheel alignment. If not then I'll take it to some other mechanic.

Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S
Hi guys,
I finally changed my chain sprocket today . Next thing I want to get a good chain lube. I came to know about abro , ows, castrol, tribocor etc . Which one is good ?? I know that motul is the best but its costly. If there is anything equally better please suggest
Thanka
